Chapter 4

The apartment did not feel real at first.

Aria stood in the middle of the living room with her bag still hanging from her shoulder, staring around as if she had stepped into someone else’s life. The space was small but clean. White walls. A soft grey couch. A kitchen that smelled faintly like fresh paint. One window faced the street below.

Her street. Her place. No guards standing inside. No footsteps echoing down hallways. No voices from other rooms. Just silence. Her chest felt tight.

“This is it,” Elena said softly, standing near the door. “Your own space.”

Matteo stood by the window, arms crossed, eyes sharp as he scanned the street below for the third time in two minutes. He had been like this since they arrived. Tense. Alert. Angry in a quiet way.

“It’s too exposed,” he said. “Second floor.Street-facing window. Anyone can see inside.”

Aria dropped her bag. “Anyone can see inside anywhere,” she replied. “I can close the curtains.”

“That’s not the point.”

She turned to face him. “Then what is the point, Matteo? You agreed to this.”

“I agreed under conditions,” he said calmly. “And I’m still deciding if those conditions are enough.”

Sofia stepped closer to Aria and rested a hand on her arm. “It’s okay,” she said gently. “We will add more locks. Cameras if needed. This is not permanent. Just a step.”

Aria nodded. She could feel her mother’s fear even though Sofia tried to hide it behind her calm voice.

The movers finished quickly. Boxes stacked neatly against the wall. Clothes in the bedroom. Books on the table. Aria watched them leave, the door clicking shut behind them.

The sound felt loud. Final. For the first time in her life, she was alone.

Matteo walked through the apartment one last time, checking every door, every corner, every window. He tested the locks twice.

“You call me every night,” he said. “You answer your phone every time. If I come and you do not answer, I will break down the door.”

“I know,” Aria said quietly. “And you do not tell strangers where you live.”

“I won’t.” “And you do not walk alone at night.” She hesitated. “I might sometimes.”

Matteo’s eyes darkened. “No.” She looked away.

Elena cleared her throat. “I’ll visit often,” she said. “You’re not as alone as it feels.”

Aria smiled weakly. “I know.” When they finally left, the silence rushed in.

Aria locked the door and leaned against it, letting out a breath she felt like she had been holding for years. She was free. And completely unprotected.

She walked around slowly, touching everything like it might disappear. The couch. The counter. The window glass was cool beneath her fingers. Outside, the street moved like normal. Cars passing. People talking. A man walking his dog. Normal life.

She closed the curtains halfway and sat on the couch, hugging a pillow to her chest. This was what she wanted. So why did her skin feel wrong?

That night, she ordered food instead of cooking. She ate sitting on the floor because it felt right. She unpacked slowly, putting things where she wanted, not where someone else told her to.

She fed the stray cat that waited near the back stairs. It rubbed against her leg, trusting her without question.

“You’re brave,” she whispered. “Or stupid.” She laughed quietly.

Later, she showered and changed into an oversized shirt, her hair still damp. She stood in front of the mirror and studied herself. Nineteen, Curvy, Green eyes that saw too much. She looked older here. Alone.

When she finally lay down to sleep, every sound felt louder. The fridge is humming. The pipes are clicking. A car door slamming outside.

Her phone buzzed.

Matteo: You locked the door?

Aria: Yes.

Matteo: Windows?

Aria: Yes.

Matteo: Curtains?

Aria: Yes.

He did not reply after that. Sleep came slowly. She dreamed of open doors.

The next morning felt lighter. Aria woke up smiling. Sunlight filled the room. No voices. No rules shouted across hallways. She made coffee in silence and drank it standing by the window.

She loved this. She walked to campus alone. No car. No guards. Just her and the city. Every step felt powerful.

Until the feeling returned. That pressure. That awareness. She slowed near the crosswalk and glanced at her reflection in a dark window. Someone stood behind her. Not close. Not far. Just enough. She turned quickly. No one. Her heart raced.

“You’re fine,” she whispered to herself. “You’re fine.”

Classes went by in a blur. She tried to focus but her attention kept slipping. Every door opening made her look up. Every chair scraping the floor made her flinch.

By the time she walked home, the sun was already low.

Her building looked different at night. Taller. Darker.

She climbed the stairs slowly.

Something sat in front of her door. Her breath stopped. A small white envelope. No name, no stamp. Just placed there. Her hands shook as she picked it up.

Inside was a single sentence. ‘You got home safe.’ Her heart slammed against her ribs. She looked around the hallway. Empty. No footsteps, no voices.

She unlocked the door quickly and locked it behind her, sliding down against it as her lungs burned. How did someone know? Her phone buzzed.

Matteo: Home? She stared at the message.

Aria: Yes.

Matteo: Good.

She did not tell him about the note. She did not know why. That night, she barely slept.

The days that followed felt strange. Not bad. Not good. Just watched.

Flowers appeared twice outside her door. White lilies, fresh and beautiful. No note this time. She loved lilies. She hated that someone knew. She brought them inside anyway. She told herself it was harmless. A secret admirer. Someone from campus. She ignored the fear curling in her stomach.

One evening, as she brushed her teeth, she thought she heard movement outside her window. She froze, listened but nothing.

She laughed quietly at herself. “You’re losing it,” she whispered.

But when she checked her phone later, there was another message from an unknown number.

‘Sleep with the light on tonight.’ Her blood turned cold. She dropped the phone.

Somewhere in the city, unseen, someone smiled.

  • His Silence, Her Cage    Come Outside

Chapter 13 Aria’s phone had been in her hand all morning. She no longer even tried to pretend. She was waiting. Waiting for him. Waiting for that message. And she hated it. The apartment felt too quiet. Too empty. Ever since Maya left, every small sound felt louder than it should. The ticking clock. The faint noise from outside.Even her own breathing. Her phone stayed silent. Still. It was starting to get to her. She stood up and paced slowly around, she whispered. “This is what you wanted.” No messages. No control. No him. But it did not feel good. It felt like something was missing. Her phone suddenly rang. Not a message. A call. Her heart jumped. She looked at the screen. Her brother. Her chest tightened. She picked up. “Hello?” “Aria.” His voice was sharp as usual. Firm. Serious. “Where are you?” he asked. “I am at home,” she said. “You sound off.” “I am fine.” There was a pause. Then he spoke again. “I heard something happened yesterda

  • His Silence, Her Cage    Did you miss me?

Chapter 12 The silence did not feel normal. At first, Aria thought it would be easier. No messages. No control. No voice on her phone. Just peace. But it did not feel like peace. It felt empty. Too quiet. Too still. Like something was missing. She sat on her bed, staring at her phone again. Nothing. No new messages since last night. Since— “Now it is just you and me.” Her chest tightened. She dropped the phone on the bed as if it burned her hand. “This is good,” she whispered to herself. “This is what you wanted.” No more stalking. No more fear. No more him. But her eyes kept going back to the phone. Waiting. Listening.Hoping. She hated that hours passed. Maya called. Aria picked up immediately. “Are you okay?” Maya asked. “Yes,” Aria said quickly. “I am fine.” “You sound weird.” “I am just tired.” There was a pause. Then Maya said softly, “I do not like that you are alone there.” Aria forced a small laugh. “I am fine, Maya. Nothing has hap

  • His Silence, Her Cage    Finally

Chapter 11 The apartment felt different. Even before Maya said anything. Aria noticed it in the way she moved. Too careful. Too quiet. As if she were listening for something that was not there. Or maybe… something that was. Maya stood by the window, peeking through the curtain again. “Do you see anything?” Aria asked. Maya shook her head. “No. But that does not mean anything.” Aria looked down at her phone. Still no message. It had been hours. Since the last one. Closer than you think. Her chest felt tight again. That silence was worse than the messages. At least when he texted… She knew he was there. Now— Nothing. A sudden ringing sound broke the silence. Maya’s phone. She looked at the screen and frowned. “I need to take this,” she said, stepping away. Aria nodded slowly. She watched as Maya walked into the other room. Her voice is low. Serious. Aria could not hear everything. Just small parts. “Now?” “…I said I am not there…” “…I will come

  • His Silence, Her Cage    Proof

Chapter 10 Aria did not stop thinking about what she saw. Daniel. On the ground. Not moving. The image kept replaying in her head, as if it were stuck there. She barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again. And worse…She kept hearing his messages. “Do not let anyone touch you.” Her chest felt tight. Maya stayed quiet that morning. Too quiet. Like she did not want to say the wrong thing. Finally, she spoke. “We need to talk about this.” Aria looked up slowly. “About what?” “Do not do that,” Maya said. “You know what I mean.”Aria looked away. Maya stepped closer. “That boy… Daniel… this is not a coincidence.” “I did not say it was,” Aria replied softly. “Then say it,” Maya pushed. “Say that he did that.” Aria’s lips parted. But no words came out. Because saying it made it real. And if it was real…Then what kind of person was watching her? Her phone buzzed. Both of them froze. Aria looked down slowly. Unknown number. She opened it. “

  • His Silence, Her Cage    Do Not Talk To Him

Chapter 9 Aria did not sleep well. Every small sound made her open her eyes. Every shadow looked wrong. And the worst part… He did not text again. No messages. No control. No voice. Nothing. It should have made her feel better. It did not. It made everything feel empty. Maya noticed it immediately. “You see,” she said that morning, crossing her arms, “he has stopped. That is good.” Aria nodded slowly. But her fingers were still wrapped around her phone. Waiting. Checking. Nothing. Maya sighed. “You need fresh air. We are going out.” “I do not feel like it,” Aria muttered. “You are going,” Maya said, already pulling her up. “You cannot stay inside and let your mind run mad.” Aria did not argue again. Maybe she needed it. Perhaps she needed to prove to herself that she could still be a normal person. The café was small and soft—soft music. People are talking quietly. Nothing like the fear that had been living in her chest since yesterday. Aria sat acro

  • His Silence, Her Cage    He Sees Everything

Chapter 8 Aria did not feel safe in her own apartment anymore.Even with Maya there, even with the doors locked and the curtains closed, it still felt like someone was watching her from somewhere she could not see. She sat on the couch, knees pulled close, phone resting in her hand. The TV was on but she was not paying attention. The sound just filled the silence.Maya was in the kitchen making something small to eat. “Aria,” she called, “you need to relax. You have been staring at that phone for like ten minutes.” “I am not staring,” Aria said softly. “You are,” Maya replied, walking back into the living room. “You are waiting for him.” Aria did not answer. Because it was true. That scared her more than anything. Her phone buzzed suddenly. Her heart jumped. Unknown number. She opened it slowly. “You look better with your hair down.” Her fingers froze. Maya noticed immediately. “What did he say?” Aria did not speak. She just turned the phone and sh
