ANYA’S POV

"I don't understand what you're saying. How on earth am I supposed to pay back his debt when I don't even know anything about it, or even have the money to begin with?" I yelled, my expression cold as I stared at Liam's lawyer, who sat calmly on the couch in the living room.

"Madam, you have to understand that if the debt isn’t paid, all of his remaining assets including this house will go to the people he owes," the lawyer said calmly, like this was just another Tuesday. Maybe he had dealt with too many angry widows to be bothered.

"Well, give it to them," I said sharply. "I don't have a dime to offer, and I don’t care enough about his assets to hold on to them."

"Anya, you can't just do that," my father said, sitting up from where he was, dressed in his usual grey business suit. "We have to be wise. Liam worked hard to keep the company his father and grandfather built. We can’t just throw it away."

I didn’t even want him here in the first place, and of course, he had show

Kane didn’t leave. He sat there like a shadow that refused to move, his gaze following me as I picked up my phone to check if I had any message of when my package would be delivered. Deciding to track my order, I sat on the couch opposite him deciding to just ignore his presence since he wasn’t here to talk. I grunt as I noticed the delivery was still about an hour away from being delivered. What’s the use of paying for express delivery when it was going to take forever to get here. I had placed an order since 9am today and this was already 3:45pm.“Expecting someone?” I heard him ask “Yes how many times do I have to tell you— the delivery man” i say tearing my eyes off my phone to look at him, now he didn’t look so good“Are you sure you don’t have to go to the hospital you look like you are on your last breath” He laughs a really hearty one “would you love that, for me to take my last breath?” “I gain nothing in your death and i also would appreciate it if you didn't do it here

  • His To Own   Chapter 41: Make him

“What do you want?” I snapped.Well, there goes my good mood.“That’s no way to speak to me, darling. We haven’t talked in, what… Two weeks?” His low voice almost sounded hurt. Almost.“Clearly, you have a reason for calling me,” I said, walking out of my room toward the kitchen. No way I was having this conversation on an empty stomach.“Yes… I miss you.”I paused, one hand gripping the stair railing.“Don’t you miss me?”“No, I don’t. And why would I?” I said, regaining my composure and stepping into the kitchen.“That hurts my feelings. You know that, right?”“Good thing I don’t care about your feelings.” I put the phone on speaker and set it on the counter.Opening the fridge, I muttered, “What can I eat today?”“And here I was, thinking you’d be eager to talk to me, given your meeting with Liam’s lawyer.”I turned to glare at the phone like it was his face, then went back to scanning the fridge.“You’re right,” I said flatly. “I did have something to say to you, but I didn’t have

  • His To Own   Chapter 40: Starting New

Should I just call her?I've been sitting on my bed since I woke up this morning, staring at my open diary, its pages filled with memories of my past. I can almost hear the echoes of my old life, the one I left behind five years ago. Laying back down, I let out a long sigh, unsure of what to do.My hand reaches for the alarm clock beside me. 8:00 AM — I can’t keep lying here, paralyzed by indecision. I need to do something, anything, to break this cycle.I sit up, running a hand through my tangled hair. I know what I need to do. I just don’t know how to do it. I hadn’t spoken to my father since I told him to leave yesterday. Like other things I wanted to do I needed to speak with Kane to know what he and my father had discussed but I had no way of contacting him so I had put a pause on that.Deciding to take a leap and just call my best friend back in college. TaraShe was the one person who always knew how to pull me out of a dark place. She saw through all the walls I built and st

  • His To Own   Chapter 38: A little desperate

Kane's Pov“Give the poor girl a break, Kane. Yes, he might have been an abusive little bastard, but he was still her husband—a husband who died a rather mysterious death.”“She has every right to question his death. And besides, you don’t expect her to be all happy and cheerful now that her life has taken such a drastic turn,” David said, giving me a serious look.“I am giving her space to process things,” I replied, irritation creeping into my voice. “But it makes my blood boil that she’s even thinking about him. He’s dead, for fuck’s sake. She shouldn’t have to think about him anymore.”David huffed and took a sip of his coffee.“Don’t you understand how I feel?”“No. No, I don’t.” He stared at me like I had completely lost my mind.“Why do I even bother explaining?” I muttered, turning back to the laptop on my desk.I expected him, of all people, to understand that I didn’t want the thought of Liam or his death to linger in her mind like a sickness. He was gone, and that should’ve

The rain poured down heavily, thunder crashing so loudly it shook the windows. Even with the TV on, you could still hear the harsh howling of the wind.I watched him move around the kitchen, using pots and spoons like it was second nature. He moved so effortlessly, like a chef in some five-star restaurant.I want to say my memory of him from five years ago was so blurry that I’d forgotten Kane knew his way around a kitchen but that would be a lie. Not only did he know what he was doing, he was a damn good cook."I'm almost done," he said, turning to me with a wide smile playing on his lips. I frowned and turned back to the TV I wasn’t even watching. I couldn’t tell you what was happening or what the plot of the movie was about.“So, what’s it about?” he asked, setting two dishes down on the dining table.“What is what about?” I asked, throwing a slight glare in his direction.“The movie you're watching, Anya, unless you weren’t paying attention and were just busy watching me,” he said
