The automatic gates slid open without a sound as the car slowly drove into the driveway. A silent sigh of relief escaped Lucien's lips. His gaze shifted toward Elena sitting still beside him. Too still.

Her hair had fallen into messy strands across her face, her posture slumped slightly against the seat. Her hands and ankles were bound, and a strip of duct tape sealed her mouth.

Why had she suddenly gone quiet?

The two hour drive to the estate had been total chaos. Two attempts to jump through

Jason kicked off his shoes, sending them flying in different directions as he stumbled toward his bed. He ripped his shirt open and the coolness of the room caressed his skin as he slumped down onto the mattress. He lay still for several minutes staring at the ceiling. Mateo’s words echoed continuously in his head.Rules are made to trap people like us. You can always bend them to your favour. The more he thought about what Mateo meant the more complicated it became. The words were self explanatory and yet there had to be something hidden in them. A clue he was missing.“Mateo, you can’t just leave me hanging.” Jason had tried to stop him from walking away. “What do you mean? If you have a solution to my problem the least you could do as a good friend is go straight to the point instead of speaking in parables.”Mateo had pushed Jason’s hand off his shoulder. “I’m tired of taking the blame every time I try to help you and it fails. You have to figure this one out yourself. When you do

“Sorry, Jason Dalton. You lost the bet again.” Mateo mocked, moving the stack of cash on the table to his side. “Five losses in a row. Maybe you should quit gambling for a while.”An uproar of laughter and soft giggles filled the room.Jason’s grip tightened around his glass of whiskey as he lifted it. He emptied it in one go and felt the burning sensation at the back of his throat.“Easy, tiger.” A man nudged him lightly. “Don’t be a sore loser.” Another round of laughter followed.“He loses everywhere. Even in bed.” He heard someone whisper behind him. He looked back in anger and saw two women dressed in revealing outfits staring at him as they giggled. He recognized one of them. She was the sex worker he had taken back to his hotel room a few days ago.He shot them a hard look and they got scared and moved away.Jason’s attention returned to the casino table. Another round had begun. He studied it quietly. Even before the dice finished rolling he already knew the winner. And as he

His soft kisses trailed down her bare back and Elena arched into them, eyes closing as she savoured the sensation flooding her body. His hand circled her waist, claiming her completely.“Lucien.” She moaned, lost in the feeling as he slowly entered her. Her hands gripped the sheets tight.“Do you like it?” His deep voice was low and laboured against her ear.Her eyes fluttered open, her lips parting to speak. But instead of words another moan came out. Her eyes fell shut again, her entire focus narrowing to his slow strokes. She was close. She could feel it building.Just as she reached the peak of her release he pulled out.Her eyes flew open and she glared at him.He smirked. “Water.” His voice sounded suddenly distant even though he was right there. “You need water. Wake up.”His voice became an echo.Elena’s eyes flew open to the white ceiling staring back at her. She lay still for a moment, chest rising and falling. Then she turned her head toward the window. It was completely da

“Drive safely.” Elena said, a dull ache spreading through her chest as she watched Sara buckle her seatbelt.Sara lifted her head and their eyes met. They stared at each other in silence for a moment before she smiled weakly. “I will.”Elena could see the sadness in her eyes. “You don’t need to be sad.” She slipped her hand into her pocket and held up a phone. “We can talk whenever you want.”Sara’s eyes lit up instantly. “No way.” She took the phone from Elena, turning it over in her hands. “Lu gave you this?”“Yes. I asked him for one and—”“I’m speechless.” Sara interrupted, still staring at it. “Do you know what this is?”“A phone.” Elena answered slowly. “Why do you look so surprised?” She laughed nervously.“Never mind.” Sara handed it back. “I just never thought you would be the one he gave it to.”“Sara, I think you owe me an explanation now.”Sara smiled, shaking her head. “I won’t.”“Tell me.” Elena pressed, pinching her arm lightly.“Ouch.” Sara laughed, pulling her arm awa

“You finally came, Lucien Black.” The bald headed man set down his cutlery, rising and extending his hand. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you after all these years.”Lucien’s gaze momentarily rested on the outstretched hand before moving to the man’s face. “I don’t think we’re on good enough terms for a handshake, Don Malo.” He pulled out a chair and sat.Don Malo let out a long loud laugh as he settled back into his seat. “You haven’t changed a bit, Mr. Black. I’d be surprised if you had.” He clapped once and a waiter stepped forward, placing a menu before Lucien. “Order whatever you like. I rented out this entire restaurant specifically for our meeting.”Lucien’s lips lifted into an unimpressed smile. “You know clearly why I’m here. Stop pretending we’re long lost friends and let’s get straight to business.” He

"Have you checked the kitchen?" Lucien asked, scratching the edge of his brow. "Or the garden?""I've searched everywhere. Anne said she hasn't seen her all morning either." Sara explained. "Do you think something bad happened to her?" She looked to him, waiting for reassurance. He shrugged. "I'm certain she's fine. She must be somewhere on the estate.""How can you be so sure?" Sara whined, crossing her arms. "You always warn me to be careful because of your enemies. What if she's been taken or something?"Lucien shook his head. "I had no idea you could be this dumb sometimes."She glared at him. "Take that back, Lu.""Or what?" He chuckled.Sara looked away, offended. He let out a soft breath, walking to where she stood and placed a hand on her shoulder. She shook it off. He placed it again, this time gripping firmly enough that she couldn't.He steered her toward the staircase and they climbed together. "When I tell you to be careful because of my enemies I mean outside these walls

"Are you out of your mind, Jason?" Elena shouted, her voice cracking. "End this prank right now. I'm not in the mood for games."Jason reached for her hands, gently caressing them. The relentless clicking shutters and blinding flashes of cameras made Elena's migraine worse. Even the dull ache in her ankle, a reminder of the six-inch heels she wore, wasn't enough to stop her from smiling. She had to. The world was watching, and beside her stood her ex-husband, Jason Dalton.Hi

"Excuse me, ma'am. This area is off limits." A woman's voice stopped Elena in her tracks. She drew in a slow breath, her eyes closing briefly as footsteps approached.“Ma'am." A light touch brushed her shoulder. "Did you hear what I said earlier? No one is permitted on this floor."Elena turned slo
