Chapter 2

作者: GOAT
The movers bustled back and forth, slowly emptying the apartment piece by piece.

It was only then that I realized something startling. After three years of dating, the traces of Francesco in this place were pitifully scarce.

There was only a pair of dust-covered slippers and a single glass he used. That was it.

Even those two items had been bought by me. He had never given me a single decent gift.

When Nicole moved, he had meticulously prepared a housewarming present. On her birthday, he showed up at her door with a massive bouquet of her favorite white roses.

But with me, he always used the same excuse. "These superficial rituals are meaningless. What matters most is that we're together."

I had questioned him and shown my frustration before, but he always argued back righteously. "I'm only good to Nicole because she's your sister."

I let out a self-deprecating laugh. Just then, my phone rang. It was my mother.

"My sweet girl, have you and Francesco finalized the wedding plans yet?" she asked.

Not long ago, Francesco and I had met each other's parents, and both families were incredibly pleased.

We had intended to lock down a wedding date, but he claimed he was too caught up in family business and suggested postponing it.

Though I was deeply disappointed at the time, I tried to be understanding of his family obligations. Looking back now, I felt nothing but relief.

If a man couldn't even remember which floor I lived on, what would marriage be like? Would I have to spend the rest of my life waiting around alone, silently enduring it all?

"Mom, the wedding is off," I said. "We broke up."

My mother's tone grew tense instantly. "What happened? Did he do something to hurt you?"

"No. I just gradually realized that we aren't right for each other."

Silence stretched over the line.

Everyone knew just how desperately I loved Francesco. We had been together for three years, and I had adored him every single day of it.

My mother knew, my sister Nicole knew, and Francesco knew it best of all.

In the beginning, I was the one who actively pursued him.

To get closer to him, I went to concerts of bands he liked, read books in his field of study, and even signed up at his gym just to create accidental run-ins.

After graduation, I turned down a highly recommended position from my advisor without a second thought. I packed my bags and rushed to the city where he lived.

My mother had been so furious back then that she refused to speak to me for three days. Yet, I had told her firmly that if I missed out on him, I would regret it for the rest of my life.

Even Nicole had mocked my lack of resolve back then. "Ella, you are completely wrapped around his finger."

Nicole and I were biological sisters, bound by blood. I never could have imagined that she would eventually enjoy my boyfriend's special treatment so shamelessly, with absolutely no regard for my feelings.

I glanced at Nicole's newly updated social media feed. It featured a photo of an exquisite candlelit dinner.

The location tag showed the exact restaurant I had spent months researching and longing to visit.

The flickering candlelight paired perfectly with the elegant dishes, and soft piano music drifted in the background.

I had invited Francesco there countless times, but he always brushed me off, claiming he was too busy. Each time, I could only suppress my anticipation.

Yet now, simply because Nicole mentioned she wanted to try it, he brought her there without a moment's hesitation.

As the last piece of furniture was moved out of the apartment, I collapsed onto the bare sofa, utterly exhausted.

I remembered the last time I moved. I had called Francesco for help, but he used his busy schedule as an excuse, saying he couldn't make it but could send someone else.

Frustrated, I refused his offer and stubbornly moved all the luggage by myself. In the end, I aggravated an old injury, leaving my lower back in excruciating pain, and spent two days confined to bed.

But when it was Nicole's turn to move, Francesco deliberately brought a crew over and helped her through the entire process.

"Moving is exhausting and troublesome," he had said at the time. "She's a girl living on her own out here. It's only right that we pitch in and help out."

Watching him hustle back and forth, his clothes soaked through with sweat, I had felt a profound sense of estrangement.

It turned out he wasn't unwilling to put in the time and effort. It was just that his care had never belonged to me.

Walking into the restaurant, the warm yellow lighting cascaded softly down over my hair. The waiter guided us to a table by the window. A small bouquet of light purple forget-me-nots rested on the tabletop, their petals still glistening with translucent water droplets.I sat down and brushed my fingertips gently against the petals. Luca looked at me and said softly, "I heard you like forget-me-nots, so I asked the restaurant to prepare them in advance. If you don't like them, I can change them right away."I shook my head, staring into the undisguised nervousness and care in his eyes. My heart melted completely.During dinner, Luca brought up some amusing stories from our college days. He talked about how I had completely left my opponent speechless during a debate competition, only to trip and fall on my way off the stage because I was too excited, sending the scorecard in my hand flying through the air.Laughing, I smacked his arm and teased him for bringing up that embarrassing

With that, the entanglement between the two of them and me was completely brought to a close.I no longer had to constantly second-guess someone else's thoughts, nor did I have to trap myself in endless emotional exhaustion. My life became stable and serene.I poured all my energy into my work. The previous project wrapped up perfectly, earning high praise from our partners, and the company paid me a generous bonus. After the meeting ended, my manager looked at me with a smile. "There's a supervisor position vacant in the company, with the official appointment happening after the New Year. Are you interested? Take your time to think about it; there's no rush to give me an answer."The recognition at work brought me an unprecedented sense of security and fulfillment.By the time I left the office after work, the sky had already turned dark.Luca was leaning against a roadside planter, holding two cups of coffee in his hands.Seeing me, he raised the cups and shook them slightly.

Ever since that day, Francesco never contacted me again, nor did he send anyone else to look for me.Later on, I heard that he left for Italy. No matter how much others tried to dissuade him, he stubbornly insisted on leaving, abandoning a great deal of family business. On the phone, a friend sighed with emotion. "Everyone is saying he became like this because of you."I didn’t respond. I simply smiled and changed the subject.Whether it was because of me or not had long since ceased to matter. Our paths would never cross again, and perhaps that was the best possible ending for us.Not long after, someone passed along news about Nicole's recent situation.Shortly after Francesco and I broke up, she actually confessed her feelings to him. However, Francesco's attitude was exceptionally cold, telling her bluntly, "If it weren't for you, Ella would never have left me. Nicole, I admit I had feelings for you, but that was only because you are Ella's sister. If you weren't her siste

As soon as the plane landed from our business trip, my phone started ringing."Ella, you finally answered! There’s a gentleman who has been sitting in the company lobby the entire morning. He insists on seeing you and refuses to leave no matter what we say."I rushed to the office, and sure enough, Francesco was still waiting in the lobby.Having not seen him for just a few days, he looked incredibly haggard. His shirt was rumpled, dark stubble covered his jawline, and heavy dark circles shadowed his eyes. The moment he saw me, he sprang to his feet, a sudden light gleaming in his eyes. "You're back, Ella."To avoid disrupting my coworkers, I led him down to the cafe on the ground floor."You moved out, and you didn't even bother to say a word to me?" Francesco sat across from me, his tone laced with a sense of grievance.I interrupted him calmly. "Francesco, we broke up.""Broke up?" He repeated the words, his brows knitting tightly together. "What gives you the right to make

After moving out, my life finally returned to a state of peace. In the past, I had constantly put my own plans on hold just to accommodate Francesco's schedule. Business trips, training seminars, and gatherings with friends were all turned down without exception.Whenever my manager asked who wanted to take on an overseas assignment, I would always lower my head in silence.Over time, everyone at the company came to know that I would always prioritize my boyfriend above everything else. I kept my entire schedule completely clear just to be at his beck and call. But now, I could finally live for myself.During a meeting that day, my manager spoke up to ask, "We have a project in Chicago next week. Is anyone willing to travel out there to follow up on it?"The conference room fell into a dead silence.Next week happened to be Valentine's Day, and no one wanted to travel for work during the holiday.Amid the silence, I raised my hand. "I'll go."My manager looked a bit surprised,

(Francesco's Perspective)Francesco did not chase after her immediately. It wasn't until evening that he finally arrived downstairs at the apartment building where Ella used to live. His bodyguards pressed the doorbell over and over again, but there was no response.Irritation gradually crept onto his face. Just then, a neighbor poked their head out from next door."Sir! Stop buzzing," the neighbor called out. "No one lives there anymore. The girl who used to stay here moved out last week."Moved out? Francesco thought. But she never said a word to me about moving.A wave of fury at being fooled crashed violently through his chest, but his face remained completely expressionless. He pulled out his phone, the cold glow of the screen illuminating his tense jawline. He sent a text, but he discovered he had already been blocked by her.He tried calling her number, but only a mechanical female voice answered the line.He had been blocked. He lowered his hand, his thumb heavily
