Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Lunarwind
Around 1:00 am, I received a video from an unknown number.

In the video, a man and a woman were being intimate with each other. The drunken woman on the bed was none other than my wife, Vivian.

"You told me I was the only man that you'd ever loved, Vivian. Is that true?" the man in the video asked.

"Of course! I even named my daughter 'Desiree' because of my desire to be with you, Liam," Vivian replied.

I was at a loss for words. It felt like my love for her had become a joke.

After spending the entire night lying awake in bed, I made a huge decision.

When Vivian returned home with Desiree the next day, I handed her the divorce papers.

Initially, she looked shocked. Yet, her surprise soon turned into anger.

"All I did was spend a night outside, Zachary. Why are you being so dramatic?" she yelled.

"You're so petty, Dad," Desiree added. "No wonder Mom doesn't like you."

I forwarded the video to Vivian and said coldly, "You should be perfectly aware of what you've done. Since Desiree is watching, I'll do you a favor and save you the embarrassment."

Vivian checked her phone. When she glanced at what I'd just sent her, her expression instantly changed.

Furious, she barked, "Are you an idiot? This is clearly made by AI! I can't believe you don't trust me. This is an insult to both Liam's character and mine! Apologize to us right now!"

Glaring at me, Desiree shouted, "You're a horrible person, Dad! Don't pick on Mom and Liam!"

The way Desiree treated me broke my heart more than Vivian's affair did. I'd showered her with endless love and affection for years, but she still chose to side with her mother without any reason at all.

Since that was the case, it was probably better for me to let them have their way.

I picked up my suitcase and declared calmly, "You can have the house and full custody of our daughter. I'll make sure to pay you the child support on time. You can discuss everything else with my lawyer."

Vivian didn't ask me to stay, and the paperwork was processed relatively quickly.

On the day our divorce was finalized, she glanced at me with a look of disdain.

"Don't come crawling back to me in the future, Zachary," she spat.

She was certain that I couldn't live without her. She believed that I'd be the first to admit that I was wrong—just like how I'd done in the past.

But she was wrong. I'd been willing to accept her bad temper and her tantrums, but I couldn't forgive her for cheating on me.

After the divorce, I tasked my company's vice president with managing all of the business ventures in Cendria. Then, I went abroad to pursue more opportunities.

Andy was a homeless child. He met me when he was about to get beaten to death by a vagrant on the streets. I saved him and adopted him.

By chance, I learned that he was of mixed race. His mother was Cendrian, so I decided to bring him back to Cendria.

When I found out that he was attending the same school as Desiree, I was surprised. I'd never expected to see Vivian and Desiree again under such circumstances.

Andy had been keeping me company for the last two years. Because of him, I hadn't thought about Vivian or Desiree in a long time.

Their threats didn't faze me. I took Andy's hand and left.

After I finished work the next day, my thoughts drifted to what happened yesterday.

Because of me, Desiree was incredibly spoiled. Aside from matters pertaining to her education, I'd always given her everything she wanted.

I wasn't sure if she might be a bad influence on Andy. So, I debated whether I should transfer him to another school.

To my surprise, I suddenly received a call from Andy's teacher, Samantha Berkeley.

"Hello, Mr. Green. Andy has gotten into a fight. I'm afraid you're going to have to drop by the school," she said.

I froze. Andy had always been a well-behaved kid. Why would he get into a fight when he couldn't even watch people slice up fish?

I rushed to the school and saw two children wrestling each other. To be precise, the other kid had pinned Andy to the ground and was currently beating him up.

I was furious.

I yanked the other child off Andy and realized that he had multiple bruises on his face. He was also bleeding from the corner of his mouth.

"Why didn't you fight back?" I asked him. "Is this how I raised you?"

I continued, "I told you not to pick on others, but I never told you not to stand up for yourself. If someone attacks you, you should do whatever it takes to defend yourself. I have more than enough money to pay their medical bills!"

Biting his lip, Andy teared up.

"I'm sorry, Dad. She told me she's your biological daughter. She also said that you'd abandon me if I hit her back."

Fortunately, the herbicides that were sold on the market were all diluted, so the potency was low.As I recalled how unusual Andy and Desiree had been acting at dinner, I came to a sudden realization.Once Andy regained consciousness, I stared at him and asked, "You knew the spaghetti was poisoned, didn't you?"His face paled. Then, he replied sheepishly, "No…"He continued, "I saw Desiree adding sugar and some other powder to your spaghetti. I wasn't sure if it was actually something bad. I didn't know if you'd believe me if I told you about it, but I couldn't just let you eat it either…"I sighed. "What are you talking about? You're my son—why wouldn't I believe you? Never do something like that ever again! If you think something is wrong, you should come and tell me about it."When Andy nodded solemnly, I felt a little more at ease. When we got home, we bumped into Desiree. The latter looked like she'd seen a ghost. She even dropped the snack she was holding. I asked Andy t

Once we returned home, Desiree immediately approached Andy and tried to make amends. First, she apologized to him. Not only that, but whenever they got any snacks or toys, she also let him have first pick. Andy was a forgiving boy. He soon forgot about what had happened in the past, and the two of them got along very well. I felt quite content with the way things were. If Desiree continued to behave this way, I thought I'd let her stay with us for the foreseeable future.Unfortunately, nothing lasted forever. While I was in the middle of a meeting one day, Deborah called me out of the blue. "You need to come home, Mr. Green. It's an emergency! Your ex-wife just showed up, and she's trying to kill Desiree!"I frantically rushed home and rescued Desiree, whom Vivian had pinned against the wall.Desiree had been stabbed in the stomach and was bleeding profusely. Her face was pale, and she looked terrified."Am I going to die, Dad? I'm so scared. I don't want to die…" she sobbe

Desiree was left with a long scar across the side of her face. Girls her age were already conscious of their appearances. Her classmates stared at her with judgemental looks on their faces. Some of the children who liked to joke around even called her a freak. As a result, she gradually became more and more withdrawn, and her grades began to decline as well. She snuck glances at me every time I picked Andy up from school. Whenever our eyes met, she stared at me with a look of anticipation. Yet, I never called out to her. Three months later, Andy scored the highest marks in his class during his midterm exams. During the parent-teacher meeting, his teacher publicly praised him for his achievement. Then, he went up to the stage and read an essay titled "My Dad" to everyone at the meeting. In the essay, he described the details of our life together in a heartfelt manner. All of the other parents felt incredibly touched by his writing. They even applauded him after he finished re

After I woke up from my afternoon nap, I walked past the kitchen and heard rustling coming from the inside.Once I went in, I found Desiree eating food straight out of the refrigerator. She looked visibly startled when I knocked on the door. Despite the predicament she was in, she stubbornly exclaimed, "You're my dad. So what if I take some food from your fridge? I'm your only daughter. Once you die, all your money is going to be mine!" I laughed.Desiree was a child. There was no way she'd know about such matters unless Vivian mentioned them on a regular basis.I couldn't believe how greedy Vivian was. Despite the fact that she was already dating her first love, she still wanted my money."Do I need to remind you that your mom and I are divorced? On top of that, I have a son now. Andy is the legal heir to my inheritance," I declared.Desiree gritted her teeth. "You're giving your money to a bastard instead of me?"I called Samantha and asked for Vivian's number. Then, at my

Just as Desiree was about to pounce at me, Andy rushed in front of me and pushed her away."Stop picking on my dad!" he yelled at her."Thank you for protecting me, Andy. I think you just earned yourself a barbecue dinner," I said affectionately.Happily chatting amongst ourselves, Andy and I walked off, leaving Desiree behind. No one noticed that Desiree was no longer looking at us with seething anger. Instead, she was watching us leave with an envious expression on her face.…The following day was a weekend, so Andy and I decided to sleep in. All of a sudden, I was woken up by the sound of knocks on our bedroom door.I opened the door and found our nanny, Deborah Keller, and Desiree staring back at me."This child claims to be your daughter, Mr. Green," said Deborah.I nodded and asked her to leave. Desiree was pouting and had a pitiful expression on her face. Only then did I notice that she was wearing the same outfit as yesterday. She told me that Vivian had instructe

Desiree was angry and humiliated. She was just about to run away when Vivian arrived at the scene. Once Vivian noticed the red handprint on Wendy's cheek, she instantly dragged Desiree over and made her stand in front of Wendy."Apologize to Wendy right now!" she yelled."She's the one who started the fight—why should I have to apologize?" Desiree replied angrily.Wendy crossed her arms. "She doesn't look sorry at all."Gritting her teeth, Vivian slapped Desiree across the face twice. Then, she turned to Wendy and said, "Desiree's an immature girl. Please don't pay her any attention."Wendy just took Liam's hand and turned to leave. Vivian followed closely behind them. Smiling obsequiously, she said, "You must be thirsty, Wendy. I can buy you a smoothie if you'd like."Wendy rolled her eyes. "I'm tired," she declared. "I want you to carry me on your back."Vivian hastily agreed to Wendy's demand and crouched down. To her dismay, instead of getting on her back, Wendy tried to
