Chapter 131 The Way He Loved Jane Dunn

Stewart Tower

A black Bentley came to a gradual stop. The first to appear from the car was a long leg, followed by the rest of Sean’s elegant form. He walked around to the passenger’s seat and pulled the door open.

Sean looked at the woman inside through narrowed eyes. She had not said a single word the entire way here. He did not try to hasten her, either; instead, he just waited quietly for the woman in the car to make her own decision.

Until this moment, Jane still could not comprehend why she had compromised with him back then. Why had she put on the clothes he had prepared for her and obeyed his orders?

A sense of self-loathing crawled into her heart— she hated how useless she was, she hated how she did not even dare to fight him!

Once they got to the company, there were a lot more Stewart Industries employees around. Jane could not stand their stealthily curious gazes, so she had to force herself to get out of the car.

Once she got out of the car, the people entering and leaving Stewart Tower began to look at her with even more burning curiosity. She immediately lowered her head, almost out of instinct, burying her head in her chest in a bid to hide herself completely from their sight. She was afraid of all these people and their gazes. In a sense, she was like someone who had lived in the darkness for so long and suddenly went outside. The moment she made contact with the sunlight, she would only find it piercing and blinding instead of warm and comforting.

Sean walked ahead, and Jane tailed behind him. After Sean walked through the doors of Stewart Tower, he suddenly stopped and partially tilted his body to glance at Jane behind him.

That woman was dawdling at the door, unwilling to take another step and walk through the doors, past that barrier.

Sean narrowed his eyes… Back then, that woman would stroll into his company and even all the way into his office with the confidence of a peacock.

Rosaline had always been the shy and awkward one. Not Jane.

Even now, the past was enshrined in his memories, but reality no longer painted the same picture.

He recalled how she behaved after her release from prison, too, how small and pathetic she was in front of everyone. He remembered her perfect posture of self-defense last night, how she was so scared that she screamed, “Don’t hit me”...

If, in those three years, she had lost something important to her, he figured that he had to retrieve it for her… If Haydn Soros loved her by putting the smile back on her face, then he would help her regain her lost pride and dignity— That was how he loved her.

“You can walk in here and join me at the meeting, or you can turn around right now and go home.” Sean swept his gaze across Jane’s face calmly. “I’m not joking. And I won’t stop you.”

Jane bit her lip and looked at the man opposite her, trying to read his intentions from his expression. However, Sean never showed his emotions on his face, and his cool gaze now was wholly unreadable to her.

She had two options… was it?

Her head was still half-buried in her chest, but she used the corners of her eyes to look around her carefully. The others were also cautiously peeking at her, their looks of curiosity as terrifying to her as wild beasts. With a whoosh, she turned back to peeping at Sean, who was standing in front of her.

Her ears were perked up. Although they spoke in whispers, she could still hear their murmured discussions and feel the contempt behind the curiosity…

“Who is that woman? Why is she cowering like a rat…?”

“Why would Mr. Stewart know such a bumpkin…?”

“Look, the clothes she’s wearing are branded goods, but even they can’t hide the stench of her poverty…”

The voices were barely louder than murmurs and she could not hear every word, it was still enough for her to hear most of it.

Her face turned deathly pale. Keeping her head pressed low, she bit her lip so hard that she tasted blood.

Sean never stopped looking at her. Jane could hear the whispers around her, and naturally so could Sean, but he did not tell the naysayers off. He just kept his eyes fixed on Jane… The Jane he knew back then did not fear any gossip or criticism. She had once held her head up high and declared to him, “Why should I care about the talk of those lesser than me?”

To the Jane of today, though, those gazes and words washed over her like tidal waves, more than enough to drown her like an ant.

Those contemptuous looks, those whispered jeers… Jane turned around and ran, limping to the road and immediately hailing a cab.

Sean did not stop her, just watching quietly as the woman flagged down a cab and left.

He pursed his lips slightly and then crooked a finger behind him. Uno came in closer, and Sean whispered into his ear, “Follow her. Also, pay the cabbie for her. She didn’t bring any money.”

“Yes, boss.”

Sean looked in the direction Jane had vanished into again before turning around and leaving. For a split second, there was a gleam in his narrow eyes: She may have escaped today, but there was always still tomorrow.

As soon as the meeting ended, Sean immediately left the company.

The Bentley drove into Jane’s neighborhood and followed the address to find Jane’s hostel.

Knock knock.

“Who is it?” the person inside asked.

The man outside the door did not reply. He just curved his finger and knocked on the door two more times.

The door opened. “Who… Why are you here?”

“Why can’t I be here?” he asked, his brow half-raised.

Jane opened her mouth to say something, but eventually she swallowed the words and asked awkwardly, “Mr. Stewart… I-Is something the matter?”

“Aren’t you going to invite me for tea?”

“I don’t have tea.”

“Water works too.”

“...I see, please come in.”

Sean ignored Jane’s reluctance and actually stepped into the house.

“I’ll go pour you some water…” The woman walked toward the kitchen with her head lowered when suddenly someone grabbed her by the arm. Sean’s deep voice spoke decisively, “Never mind that. Pack up your things and come with me.”

“Do you want to go somewhere? I don’t need to pack up. We can go just like this.”

She looked up and saw the man with a smile playing on his lips. “What I meant was, pack up your luggage. You won’t be staying here anymore.”

“...Where will I stay, then?” Jane began to panic. Where was she supposed to stay if not here?

“With me,” Sean said, enunciating each word clearly.

Jane instantly froze on the spot, wondering if she had heard wrong.

“...Mr. Stewart, I’m quite content with staying here.”

Instead of responding to that, Sean looked at the time on his watch. “I’ll give you fifteen minutes to pack your things. After that, I’m taking you with me.” With that, he gave her another look before adding, “Whether you’re ready or not.”

At that moment, Jane properly panicked. “Mr. Stewart, you’re being unreasonable! You’re being ridiculous and utterly overbearing! I’m quite happy staying here. I have no intention of moving away.” Much less moving in with you!

Sean said calmly, “What you really want to say is that you don’t want to live with me, right?”

Jane abruptly paled when she heard that!

Her reaction made Sean chuckle. “Bingo.” One second he was laughing, and the next his expression had changed altogether, his every pore emanating an Arctic chill. “You have fifteen minutes. It’s decided.”
