Chapter 4

Author: Double Zero
Midway through the discussion about the project, Marshall suddenly smiled at me and said, "Jeremy, would you believe me if I told you that I could ensure that your life will forever be a living hell today?

"You'll fall completely from grace without the chance of ever making anything out of yourself again."

As I was busy with my analysis of the project data, I snapped impatiently, "Cut the crap. These numbers don't add up. If you push things forward like that, it's going to lead to a huge crisis!"

Unexpectedly, Marshall simply laughed when he heard that. He got his phone out and played a video.

It was a video of a half-finished building collapsing. Dozens of workers were buried beneath the rubble, and the scene descended into utter chaos.

The title of the video was "Scene of Jeremy Carter's Crimes".

I scrambled to make an emergency call for someone to save the trapped workers, but Marshall scoffed at me. "These videos were taken a week ago. Do you like the gift I prepared for you, Jeremy?"

As soon as he finished speaking, Liam came storming into the conference room. He knocked me to the floor with a punch.

"Jeremy, you murderer! Why are you the one leading this project? Mr. Locke told me you snatched the project away from him. I'm going to hold you accountable for the losses I've suffered!"

My heart turned cold as I watched the way Marshall ran over to Amelia and stood beside her with an aggrieved expression. In an instant, I realized what was going on.

"Amy, it was Mr. Carter who seized control of this project. I didn't dare to challenge him on it. I never thought something this catastrophic would happen. He jeopardized dozens of lives! I can't believe how ruthless he is."

Amelia stared at me and commanded icily, "Apologize to Mr. White at once!"

As I stared at her now, I could no longer hold back the hurt and indignation that had been welling up inside of me.

"I only found out about this project today. I was never involved in any of the earlier decisions. I also have proof that I didn't even set foot into the office lately!"

I pulled out my phone to prove myself, but Amelia simply slapped me across the face. "That's enough, Jeremy! Why would Marshall try to frame you?

"Mr. White is one of our major clients. If it weren't for your reckless behavior, none of this would have happened! Every backup copy of the project's documents I have is signed with your name, so what other excuse do you have left now, huh? Apologize!"

When I saw how adamant her gaze was, I couldn't say a word.

This had all been part of the trap Amelia set up for me. Her goal was to make me take the fall for Marshall.

Who would ignore the solid evidence she presented and choose to believe someone with a long list of prior offenses?

"I apologize. It was all due to my mistake," I said.

Liam threw another punch at me and even kicked me for good measure. He didn't stop cursing me out.

After Liam's assistant pulled him away, Amelia coldly announced, "You're going to bear sole responsibility for the compensation for this incident, Jeremy. It's clear to me now that you'll never change. There's no place for you in this industry anymore.

"Once the divorce decree is issued, we'll no longer have any ties to each other!"

Amelia did a great job giving a false statement in support of Marshall. Once again, I was subjected to everyone's scorn and became the scourge of society.

When I went to see Liam to make up for the situation, he waved it off before eyeing me sympathetically.

"We've known each other for so many years now. How could I not see that Amelia deliberately set you up this time? Don't worry about it. None of the workers was seriously hurt. They just needed a few days of rest."

When he saw the tension leave my shoulders, he smiled and patted me on the back.

"I'll claim the losses I'm owed myself. As for you, it's time for you to stop foolishly devoting yourself to Amelia."

I smiled and said goodbye to Liam. After picking up the divorce decree, I rushed to the airport and caught the earliest flight to Dennoria.

This time, I walked away from Amelia for good. Even though she kept tailing me and tried to convince me to come back to her, I never once looked over my shoulder. After everything finally came to light, Liam and I sat down for a meal together. We talked a lot. I tried to bring up the losses his company had suffered due to this situation, but Liam brushed it off with a wave of his hand."Who cares about those losses? We're buddies, aren't we? It's not like you won't throw me a bone if you come across some decent partnership opportunities in the future, right? This is nothing."I'm just glad you're fine now. You have no idea how afraid I was that you might get depressed and end up taking your own life. Thankfully, it's all in the past now."I hugged Liam tightly and said nothing more. The project meetings went on for a week before Summer came to me. She said her work matters abroad couldn't be delayed any longer, so she wanted to know when we were heading back to Dennoria.I deci

Snorting, I put a stop to Amelia's ramblings, saying, "You're going to let me return to the company? Why should I go back there and continue to slave away for you, letting you suck me dry? What makes you think you're worthy of that?"You should be thanking me for the opportunity to weed out the leeches and parasites in your company through this police investigation."I ended the call without giving her a chance to say anything else.Soon, the police had gotten to the bottom of everything. They even issued an official statement to clear my name.Summer grinned brightly when she saw the statement they released."At last, you're no longer the scapegoat! If I'd known this would happen, I would never have gone abroad. If I'd been here in Havaria to help you, they wouldn't have been able to target you like that."Back then, Amelia had gone to great lengths to fabricate the evidence in Marshall's favor. Since it was her own company, she had the final say in everything. Who would dare d

Amelia kept her voice low and said to me, "That's enough, Jeremy. I know you were wronged, but all that happened so long ago anyway. There's no point in clinging to past grievances!""Besides, the board has already kicked Marshall out of the company. If you bring it up again, you'll just be making his life harder. This ends now. Since we'll be remarrying in the future, I don't want things between us to get too ugly."Without even looking at her, I responded curtly, "Even narcissism should have its limits. I've never even mentioned wanting to marry you again. "Moreover, I'm determined to clarify the truth about everything. I'll even make sure that all previous attempts to make me the scapegoat will be brought to light."When the board of directors at Stone Group found out I'd gone abroad, they repeatedly tried to bring me back to the company, but I refused every time.Following that pre-bid conference, I didn't meet with Amelia again. Surprisingly, it was Summer who kept urging

"I can't believe you had the nerve to come back!" Marshall scoffed. "Here I was, thinking that you'd spend the rest of your life hiding in some desolate country. "Do you seriously think that no one will know about all your scandalous deeds just because you changed your name?"Believe it or not, but once I proclaim your true identity to everyone, they'll go right back to cursing you out! You'll fall right back into the mud again!"Amelia's eyes flashed with panic as well, but she swiftly calmed down and looked at me with a gentle expression. "How have you been doing abroad, sweetheart?"I've been meaning to visit you, but I had to stay here to run the show at Stone Group. Besides, considering the controversies surrounding you right now, I think it's best if you remain abroad."I snorted at the look of affection she was giving me. Why was she putting on a show in front of me? Wasn't she the one who ruined my reputation, made my life a living hell, and got me blacklisted from the

Summer organized a dinner to celebrate that I'd secured the project. She was thrilled when she saw the signed contract."You actually secured the project with Mr. Chase! I'll have you know that our company has been in a deadlock with him for five whole years over this project."We've sent heaven knows how many representatives to try to negotiate with him, but no one managed to do it. Yet, here you are, earning his recognition in just three months. You've certainly got a bright future ahead of you, Jeremy."Come. Let's all give a toast to Jeremy Carter!"Amused by Summer's show of exaggerated enthusiasm, I raised my glass and drained it in one go. "I have you to thank, Ms. Nolan. If not for you, I wouldn't have had a chance to prove what I'm capable of. Let me think of what I can do to thank you properly for that."Summer blushed. She lowered her head, unable to look me in the eye. "You know how I feel about you. But of course, it's not like I'm helping you just so I can force you

Before boarding the plane, I called Summer, who'd been my junior back in college. She said to me, "I've taken care of things in Havaria. You don't need to worry about the rest."When the plane landed, Summer panicked when she saw how battered and bruised I was. She pulled me into a hug before saying, "Time to fess up. What on earth happened that made you finally agree to come over? You said you couldn't explain things properly over the phone. "Well, now that we've met in person, you can tell me, right?"I've gotten rid of the trending searches on social media back in Havaria, the ones you asked me to handle. Are those people blind? It's obvious you had no hand in all that outrageous nonsense!"My nerves had been on edge lately. The massive debt and verbal abuse online kept me up all night. Now that Summer was hugging me, the pent-up hurt and frustration I felt came bursting out like a breached dam. I held her tight and tried my best to keep my voice steady as I explained, "A
