Sly asked Monica when the latter seemed speechless. It was rhetorical anyway. What Sly wanted to know was the effect the man had on Monica to get such a reaction from her.

"Monica Del, it's wonderful to see you tonight. I almost didn't recognize you," the man said, indirectly answering Sly's question. Sly face darkened, his eyes cold. He felt a twitch in his heart at the way the man spoke. There was a ray of confidence and pride, in contrast to Monica's expressionless face.

"Oh, I didn't expect you to recognize me, Mr. White. After all, I am just a piece of trash, who would only succeed in warming other men's beds," Monica said coldly.

The man's face turned chagrin but he quickly composed himself. "You misunderstood, Monica, but that was in the past. You are nothing like the timid girl who entered my office and froze at the spot. You are so different now and you are even Mrs. Norman. I must say that your progress is rather quick and unexpected
