Chapter 5

Autor: Washing Wheat
"Did you know that they tore up my university acceptance letter just to let you get your degree?! It's because our family could only afford one university graduate! Do you know why I got married so early? It's because my in-laws agreed to pay for your tuition, which was why I was married off!"

My words did not garner any reaction from Candice. All she did was sneer. "So what? If you weren't born, I would have gotten more. You should never have been born, Annie, but it's all right now. Once you're dead, everything you have will belong to me."

Candice started laughing wildly. "I should be thanking you for finding such a wonderful husband. Otherwise, my baby wouldn't have gotten a good father like him. Don't you worry about us. We'll live a happy life together."

She turned savagely to the death convicts and instructed, "Strip her naked after you're done with her and throw her onto the streets! I want everyone to see what a sl*t this bride is to be sleeping with so many men on the night of her wedding!"

"No!" I screamed as those men pressed me to the ground and started tearing my clothes off. Candice locked the door while smiling gleefully, and she slipped back to the wedding dinner, acting nonchalantly as she stood by Russell's side.

An explosion was suddenly heard, and a fire broke out not far from where the house was. Everyone jumped from their seats.

"What's happening?! The house looks like it's on fire! Oh, my gosh! The bride is still inside! Someone save her!"

Russell felt his eye twitching, and he was filled with panic. He stood up right away, flipping the table in the process, as he ran toward the house. "Annie! Annie's still in the house!"

Candice felt a little unsettled as she stared at the sudden fire. She forced a smile while trying to calm Russell down, but he pushed her away.

By the time everyone rushed to the house, they saw me crawling out from the fire with wounds all over me. Everyone looked at me in shock as I stumbled and tried to stand up. My throat was sore from the smoke, but I shouted, "Everyone! I want to lodge a report against my husband, Russell Loft, for cheating on me with the army doctor! They even locked me up in the room with several convicted rapists, and tried to get me killed!"

"What are you talking about, Annie?!" Russell roared at me while shielding Candice, who looked like she was about to pass out, behind him. "It's one thing to be constantly showing your jealousy, but how can you malign the army doctor this way?! Candice is my personal doctor in the army who treats my wounds. She's always been a help to me, and you're being ungrateful for everything she did for me, even going as far as to accuse her of something horrible like this!"

Russell turned to the superiors, who were looking at all this sternly, and said, "I have to be honest with everyone about my wife's condition. She is mentally ill and is constantly accusing me of having an affair."

He sounded bitter as he continued, "I'm extremely sorry that Doctor Candice Channing has been hurt in the process. I will do my best to make it up to her. I won't defend Annie just because she's my wife. I will personally submit a letter of protest against her, and point out her wrongdoings in a public meeting! I'll make sure she apologizes to you in public!"

Candice teared up. "Thank you, Russell. It makes me safe to hear you say that."

The superiors and colleagues around us started looking at me with disdain.

"I can't believe that's who she really is."

"How can you create a scene like this on such a happy occasion, Annie? What bad luck for Russell to marry a woman like you."

I looked at everyone and laughed coldly.

"Do you really think…" He stared right at Russell. "Do you really think the baby is yours? It's not. It's mine."Tension filled the air as Candice turned pale. "Shut up!" She panicked as she ran toward Russell. Her voice broke, "Don't listen to him! It's not what you think. Let me explain, Russell…"Russell kicked her away from him, and she fell to the ground, looking disheveled. Russell stared down at her icily. "You can leave your explanation for your superior, not me."As he spoke, footsteps could be heard coming from outside the door. Several men in uniform from the Investigation Bureau walked into the room. "Please come with us, Candice Channing."Candice broke down, and she crawled toward Russell, grabbing him by the leg of his pants. "Russell, please save me! I made a mistake. I was wrong! I just loved you too much, which was why I did everything I did!"Russell looked down at her like he was staring at a stranger, and he pulled away from Candice slowly. Candice was still

Russell's eyes turned red with anger as he asked hoarsely, "Were you the one who let them out?! Was it you?! Did you let them go after Annie?! Are you crazy?!"His subordinate was trembling from the beating, and he kept backing away from Russell. "No… I… I wasn't the only one… You… You were the one who told us to get it done!"Russell was taken aback. "Me? When did I ever give you that order?!"His subordinate was almost crying, "Dr. Channing told us to! She came to us with your signature and told us it was an order from you! She said you were unhappy about your wife being disobedient and constantly causing a scene, and that it was affecting your relationship with Dr. Channing, which was why you wanted her handled so that she would become obedient…"We didn't dare to disobey orders, especially when the order had your signature on it! We thought… We thought it was a direct order from you…"Russell felt intense panic when he heard this, and he blew up with rage. He could hardly stan

The lights in the long corridor were blinding, and the door to the electrotherapy room at the end was shut tight. Vagues buzzing from the working machines could be heard coming from inside, accompanied by unbridled screaming."Ahhh!" The voice sounded broken, like it was being torn apart alive, and it made Russell pause in his tracks. He watched as the doors opened, and a gurney was pushed out with a white cloth over it. Russell stopped suddenly, but dashed toward the gurney the next second. His knees went weak as he knelt to the ground with trembling hands. When his fingers touched the white cloth, he found himself too scared to uncover it. "Annie…"His voice was trembling, and he worked up the courage to pull off the white covers. The person lying under the covers was not me. It was an old man with a graying face who had stopped breathing. Russell was taken aback, and he froze on the spot. The nurse's aide was shocked by his actions and quickly explained, "This… This is a patie

It was ridiculous to accuse Annie of being promiscuous. Russell stared at Candice as the look in his eyes turned cold. It felt like he was looking at her for the first time, and his stare sent chills down Candice's spine. Her fingers started to tremble. "I'm just saying this for your own good, Russell…."Candice's voice got smaller, but Russell was already looking away as he replied with indifference, "Whatever happens between Annie and me is none of your business."It only took one curt reply for Candice's smile to freeze on her face. She bit her lip as hate flashed in her eyes. Russell wanted to say something, but his mind was in a mess. That was when he suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to make the call to the sanatorium to stop the electrotherapy. He turned to look at Candice, who was still in bed, and resumed his gentle tone with her, "Have a good rest and stop letting your imagination run wild."He walked out of the room and into the corridor, which was bright with

There was dead silence in the room as everyone turned to stare at Russell. He had personally arrested those criminals and he signed the papers to have them detained. Russell gulped as he slowly turned pale, but he quickly calmed down as he said grimly, "It wasn't me." He straightened up and continued with composure, "There must be an internal miscommunication, or someone might have done this. I'll take responsibility for capturing them again and investigating this thoroughly."The moment he said this, his superior sneered. "There’s no need." The tension in the air was thick, and his superior stared at him while continuing, "Remember what you said? You said something about using your future as a guarantee. Remember your words, or you might have to say goodbye to your future."With that, his superior left. Every step he took exploded loudly in Russell's mind as he stood there trembling. It took him a while before he finally walked toward the hospital room.Russell pushed it open to se

"How can you say that I'm slandering Candice with such conviction, Russell? Do you dare let your personal doctor go through a medical screening? Do you dare let all the mothers here take a look at her belly? She's probably four months pregnant right now!"Everyone turned to look at Candice, who was in loose clothing, the moment I said this. She started to panic and cry while saying, "You're just trying to make up stories about me because you know I get embarrassed easily. How can you make me reveal my belly in public? Are you trying to ruin my reputation? If that's what you want, let me just die and prove my innocence with my death!"With that, she ran toward the cliff."Candice!" Russell yelled out at her as he ran over to shield her in his arms. When Candice passed out in his arms, looking pale, he turned to me coldly. "You forced me into doing this."He said to the superiors with a pained look. "I'd like to apply for my wife to be sent to the sanatorium for treatment. I heard th
