Chapter 3

Author: Palma W
Six days out from the Black Harbor wedding, Alexander, Nathan, and Julian owed me three dates we had already set.

After Vivian's breakdown cut my birthday party short, Alexander had promised to come to my fitting for the winter charity ball. Nathan had promised to check the old injury in my hand. Julian had booked the entire observatory and promised to give me a second birthday celebration. Every one of those invitations had come from them.

Monday morning I arrived at the dress studio on time. The tailor pinned the hem into place, and I stood in front of the full-length mirror for a solid forty minutes. Alexander never appeared.

In the end, his assistant called. "Mr. Grant gave your appointment to your sister, Vivian. She has never attended a formal public ball, and he felt she needed the practice in front of the cameras more than you did."

I looked down at the unfinished silver-gray gown. At seventeen, at my first charity dinner, I was so afraid of the reporters' cameras that nothing on earth would get me out of the car. Alexander canceled an important meeting on the eve of a trial and sat quietly in that car with me for two full hours. He told me then that if something involved me, it was always a priority.

Now he had his assistant pass along a message. "You'll have countless more chances."

That afternoon I went to Nathan's private clinic. Every winter the old injury in my hand flared up, and no matter how busy he was, he had always kept a follow-up slot open for me. But the nurse stopped me at the door and told me the only opening had been given to Vivian. "Vivian started having trouble breathing after Black Harbor requested a medical exam before the wedding. Dr. Cole is with her."

I texted Nathan: "At least give me a heads-up." Twenty minutes later, he replied with a single sentence: "Your hand isn't an emergency. Reschedule it yourself."

At six that evening, I reached the observatory right on time. Julian had said he would make up for the moon he had failed to give me at the party. The staff knew me, and one of them said with a smile that he usually came an hour early to adjust the lights, but tonight he still hadn't shown up.

At seven exactly, a message finally came from Julian's phone. The zipper on Vivian's gown had jammed during her fitting, bringing back a memory of being locked in a storage locker at a foster home, and she had broken down sobbing. Alexander and Nathan were already on their way, and he had to be there too.

He ended the message with, "Go home alone tonight. You could use some practice being independent."

After he sent it, he turned his phone off.

I sat in the empty viewing hall and watched the staff shut off the bright lights one by one. The venue manager came to tell me they were closing and couldn't help asking, "Where is Mr. Vale? What about the others? In past years, they'd spend a whole day setting up even if you only stayed half an hour."

"They have someone else who needs them more."

The moment I said it, I realized I had gotten very good at making excuses for them.

Back at the estate, all three of them were posted outside Vivian's bedroom. She was wrapped in a blanket, her eyes swollen, and she stood up the second she saw me. "I'm sorry. I'll give the gown back to you, and I'll make Julian take you to the observatory again. It's all my fault."

I didn't take the dress box she held out. I looked straight at the three men. "Why didn't a single one of you tell me beforehand?"

"There, she's doing it again." Vivian's fingers shook harder. "I really can be the one to go. I don't want to come between you and Evelyn."

Alexander stepped forward, put himself in front of Vivian, and stopped her from apologizing any further. "Evelyn, don't force her to have a breakdown just to earn your forgiveness."

"I'm confronting you three, not her."

"She has six days left in this house." Nathan's voice was heavy with exhaustion. "Your hand can be looked at next week, the gown can be fitted again, and we can reschedule your birthday celebration."

Julian rubbed at his temple. "You're not a child. You shouldn't need one broken promise after another to confirm how we feel about you."

I stood there and looked at them. I had never been fighting over the time they spent with Vivian. What I couldn't understand was why they couldn't spare me even one simple heads-up. But as long as Vivian was shaking, every question I asked would be twisted into an attack.

I turned and walked away. At the end of the corridor, I heard Alexander lower his voice to the other two. "Until the engagement is settled, no more coddling Evelyn. We agreed: anyone who gives in is just letting her keep mistreating Vivian."

Nathan was quiet for a moment. "She'll be angry."

"She'll sulk for a few days and get over it," Julian said. "Evelyn could never bring herself to leave us for real."

Once, if I had heard them talking about me behind my back, I would have pushed the door open and made them say it to my face. But that night I stood at the end of the corridor, listened to the whole thing, and went back to the Winter House.

They thought I was still waiting for one of them to give in first. But I never wanted to set foot in that shared room of theirs again.

  • My Three Fiances Betrayed Me, So I Married the Heir   Chapter 20

The wind off the sea cut to the bone. I sat on the black rocks and read every page of the divorce papers. The love and devotion of those twenty-six years hadn't all been lies. Alexander really had protected me with everything he had. Nathan really had put my safety first. Julian really had climbed onto the roof and built me moonlight from three hundred silver lanterns. My mother truly loved me, and Vivian was never a villain scheming to steal my life.Precisely because all of that love had been real, the losses and hurts that followed cut so deeply.I finally understood: being loved by everyone didn't mean I had to give up my boundaries. Having a kind heart didn't mean I had to keep sacrificing myself to make up for someone else's misfortune. Kindness should be something I chose, not an obligation other people could draw on whenever they liked. It was fully dark before I started back. Roman was still in the study. He didn't ask where I had been, and he hadn't quietly checked whether th

Once my mother was out of danger, I scrolled through the whole chat from beginning to end.Giving Vivian the moonstone crown wasn't a spur-of-the-moment impulse. Giving her my chair at the club wasn't an attendant's mistake. Freezing the black card, reassigning the driver, taking over my bedroom, and changing the priority on the emergency system were not careless oversights made in the middle of chaos.Every one of those decisions was worked out among the three of them. The day after the Black Harbor engagement was confirmed, Alexander was the first to argue that Vivian had only just come home and was already being married off, so for this last month she ought to have everything I had always had. Nathan believed I had lived my whole life inside a protective shell and that giving way briefly would do me no real harm. Julian decided that although I was stubborn, I was soft underneath, and that as long as the three men presented a united front, I would soon learn to share. Then they divid

The tide tower was less than a mile from the cottage, a ten-minute walk in good weather. But with the storm raging, every step sank both feet into what felt like a bottomless white abyss.Roman walked half a pace ahead and to one side. He didn't choose the route for me. He only reached out to steady my arm when the wind knocked me sideways. Using scraps of childhood memory, I found a sheltered path. A little farther on, a dark coat lay at the base of the tower. It was my mother's."Mom!" I shouted.A faint reply came from behind the heavy tower door.My mother was slumped against the cold stone wall, her right foot bent at a wrong angle, her lips blue with cold. She had wrapped her whole coat around Vivian and had nothing on but a thin knit sweater.Vivian was curled up in the corner of the tower, muttering the same things over and over. "I didn't leave her on purpose, I only wanted to find a signal. She's the one who insisted on coming after me. I told her to go back and she wouldn't

Whenever I was in trouble before, Alexander was always the first to take charge. He was used to giving orders and certain he always knew best. But on the night of the blizzard, he stood at the cold doors of the hotel, stripped of all his pride, and asked me for help.Alexander, Nathan, and Julian had already searched every place in Boston my mother regularly went. Julian accessed the vehicle-tracking system and traced the car onto the coastal highway heading north, where the storm had swallowed the signal whole."The last location is around Blue Bay." Julian's finger stopped on the screen, his voice tightly controlled. "I can keep reading the in-car records, but that's Eleanor's and Vivian's private data, and I don't want to make decisions for anyone on my own anymore."Nathan played a fragment of audio saved on his phone. Howling wind filled the earpiece, most of the words torn to pieces, only a few of them coming through. "Blue Door... Vivian, don't run... wait for me...""She said B

After she said it, the tears ran down her cheeks. She looked nothing like someone coolly exposing a secret in triumph. She looked as if the floor were giving way beneath her and the words had escaped in panic. "She was considering Alexander, Nathan, and Julian all at the same time." The rest came out in a rush. "She married you only because, at the time, they were treating me better than they treated her. Once she calms down, she may still go back to them."My mother stood up at once to take hold of her. "Vivian, that's enough."Vivian threw off my mother's hand. "If Roman knew everything about her past, he would leave her. Then the three of them would be around her again, and Mom would look at nobody but her."She was shaking with sobs. "I know that chair isn't mine. The gown and the bedroom aren't mine either. But every time I got one more thing, I thought it meant they wouldn't send me away. I never want to go back to having no one."The ballroom was completely still.Alexander, Nat

Sophie Grant's wedding was at a hotel on Boston Harbor. I entered the ballroom on Roman's arm, and the conversation died in waves. For ten solid years, all of Boston society had been waiting for me to choose a husband from Alexander, Nathan, and Julian. Nobody had expected the man beside me to be Roman, the heir to Black Harbor, a man everyone feared and few respected.Plenty of people muttered that I had married into Black Harbor out of spite, and some guessed privately that Roman would soon tire of a wife who had been spoiled since birth. I paid no attention to any of it.At the family table the fourth chair was still in its place, the silver plate restored, and the person sitting in it was Vivian. The moment my mother saw me she signaled Vivian to stand. "That's Evelyn's seat."The color went out of Vivian's face. She braced a hand on the table edge and got up, her voice faint. "I didn't know you were coming back. I'll move right now."Every guest in the room was looking at her.I d
