Chapter 5

Author: Palma W
The year I turned eighteen, the three of them gave me a red button.

It was linked to their private lines, the trackers in their cars, and the family security system. Alexander told me that whatever happened, if I pressed it they would be at my side immediately. Once I set the alarm off in my sleep, and in under ten minutes Alexander's car came tearing up the drive, Nathan hadn't even had time to change out of his scrubs, and Julian was still in evening dress. The three of them stood around me while I lay perfectly fine in bed, and though their faces were furious, not one of them said a word of blame.

Julian told me then that pressing it by mistake didn't matter, that they would rather come running a hundred times for nothing than miss the one time it was real.

And now the top priority contact in that emergency system had quietly been changed to Vivian. Nobody told me.

I only found out four days before the wedding.

That afternoon Vivian couldn't find my mother anywhere on the estate, and after two minutes she pressed the red button. Alexander walked out of a meeting, Nathan stopped in the middle of rounds, and Julian drove clear across the city back to the estate. When it turned out my mother had only stepped into the garden to take a call, still not one of them said a word to her about it.

"Once she's in Black Harbor she won't have us to lean on anymore." Nathan checked her cold fingers carefully. "These next few days, she needs to get used to asking for help."

That night I went into the city alone to go over a restoration plan for an old hotel. A storm swept the whole block and the power cut out. The elevator, which had reached the twelfth floor, shuddered hard, the lights went out completely, and the car hung between two floors.

The darkness closed in all at once and my palms went damp. I'd been afraid of small, enclosed spaces since childhood. In elevators Julian always stood by the control panel, Nathan kept talking to distract me, and Alexander held out his hand, claiming it was only in case I lost my balance.

In that car, there was no one but me.

My signal came and went. I pressed the red button and the screen lit up for a moment. A notice appeared: Priority contact has been changed. Your request will be handled as standard priority.

I thought I had misread it and pressed the button again. The same words came up.

I called Alexander. No answer. I called Julian and went straight to voicemail. I called Nathan last, and the line rang for a long time before the call was declined.

I made myself stay calm and left a detailed voicemail. "It's me. The elevator has broken down, the hotel has lost power, and I'm stuck between the twelfth and thirteenth floors."

I called my mother's number too. No answer there either.

I found out later that at that hour every one of them was with Vivian at her premarital counseling session. Nathan saw my call, heard the first seconds of the message, remembered the agreement the three of them had made, decided on his own that I was fighting for emergency priority, and silenced the call.

The air in the car grew stifling, and panic closed around my throat until I nearly screamed. Then I remembered a hotel guard saying the service hatch had its own intercom. I edged along the wall of the car, slammed my knee against the metal rail hard enough that the pain almost dropped me to the floor, and found the service panel in the dark. A fingernail tore back and blood ran down my fingers.

I got through to security, switched on the emergency light the way they told me to, and waited until a maintenance crew pried the doors open.

Once I was out, I didn't call anyone. I went to the emergency room alone to have my hand treated, then took a taxi back to the estate.

The moment I walked into the main hall, Vivian saw the blood on my hand and screamed. She shrank in behind my mother. "Is it because of the emergency button? I didn't know they changed the priority. I can give it back to you right now."

Eleanor's first reaction was not to ask what had happened to me. She grabbed my wrist and hid the bleeding hand behind my back. "Don't let her see blood. It's taken all day to get her calm."

Only then did Nathan notice the scrape on my knee. "What happened?"

"The hotel lost power and the elevator failed. I called all of you for help."

His face went white. "Why didn't you just call 911?"

I looked at him. "Because you told me the red button was my emergency line."

The hall went briefly silent. Julian spoke first. "I'll set up dual priority tomorrow." Alexander nodded too. "This was a settings error. It won't happen again."

"This isn't a system problem." I took the red button off my wrist and set it on the table. "You heard my message from that elevator and chose to ignore it."

Nathan's lips moved. He didn't deny it.

I pushed away the button Julian was trying to hand back to me. "I don't want protection I have to nearly die to earn back."

I went back to the Winter House to gather my documents, and in the old files my mother had stacked there that afternoon I found a complete copy of the Black Harbor contract. The substitution clause everyone had overlooked was pressed under everything else at the bottom of the desk.

I took out my phone and dialed the private number printed on the letter.

It rang once and was picked up. A low, unfamiliar voice came through. "Evelyn?"

With the voluntary fulfillment clause pinched between my fingers, I said, "Roman Blackwood, I'd like to talk to you about who the real bride should be."

  • My Three Fiances Betrayed Me, So I Married the Heir   Chapter 20

The wind off the sea cut to the bone. I sat on the black rocks and read every page of the divorce papers. The love and devotion of those twenty-six years hadn't all been lies. Alexander really had protected me with everything he had. Nathan really had put my safety first. Julian really had climbed onto the roof and built me moonlight from three hundred silver lanterns. My mother truly loved me, and Vivian was never a villain scheming to steal my life.Precisely because all of that love had been real, the losses and hurts that followed cut so deeply.I finally understood: being loved by everyone didn't mean I had to give up my boundaries. Having a kind heart didn't mean I had to keep sacrificing myself to make up for someone else's misfortune. Kindness should be something I chose, not an obligation other people could draw on whenever they liked. It was fully dark before I started back. Roman was still in the study. He didn't ask where I had been, and he hadn't quietly checked whether th

Once my mother was out of danger, I scrolled through the whole chat from beginning to end.Giving Vivian the moonstone crown wasn't a spur-of-the-moment impulse. Giving her my chair at the club wasn't an attendant's mistake. Freezing the black card, reassigning the driver, taking over my bedroom, and changing the priority on the emergency system were not careless oversights made in the middle of chaos.Every one of those decisions was worked out among the three of them. The day after the Black Harbor engagement was confirmed, Alexander was the first to argue that Vivian had only just come home and was already being married off, so for this last month she ought to have everything I had always had. Nathan believed I had lived my whole life inside a protective shell and that giving way briefly would do me no real harm. Julian decided that although I was stubborn, I was soft underneath, and that as long as the three men presented a united front, I would soon learn to share. Then they divid

The tide tower was less than a mile from the cottage, a ten-minute walk in good weather. But with the storm raging, every step sank both feet into what felt like a bottomless white abyss.Roman walked half a pace ahead and to one side. He didn't choose the route for me. He only reached out to steady my arm when the wind knocked me sideways. Using scraps of childhood memory, I found a sheltered path. A little farther on, a dark coat lay at the base of the tower. It was my mother's."Mom!" I shouted.A faint reply came from behind the heavy tower door.My mother was slumped against the cold stone wall, her right foot bent at a wrong angle, her lips blue with cold. She had wrapped her whole coat around Vivian and had nothing on but a thin knit sweater.Vivian was curled up in the corner of the tower, muttering the same things over and over. "I didn't leave her on purpose, I only wanted to find a signal. She's the one who insisted on coming after me. I told her to go back and she wouldn't

Whenever I was in trouble before, Alexander was always the first to take charge. He was used to giving orders and certain he always knew best. But on the night of the blizzard, he stood at the cold doors of the hotel, stripped of all his pride, and asked me for help.Alexander, Nathan, and Julian had already searched every place in Boston my mother regularly went. Julian accessed the vehicle-tracking system and traced the car onto the coastal highway heading north, where the storm had swallowed the signal whole."The last location is around Blue Bay." Julian's finger stopped on the screen, his voice tightly controlled. "I can keep reading the in-car records, but that's Eleanor's and Vivian's private data, and I don't want to make decisions for anyone on my own anymore."Nathan played a fragment of audio saved on his phone. Howling wind filled the earpiece, most of the words torn to pieces, only a few of them coming through. "Blue Door... Vivian, don't run... wait for me...""She said B

After she said it, the tears ran down her cheeks. She looked nothing like someone coolly exposing a secret in triumph. She looked as if the floor were giving way beneath her and the words had escaped in panic. "She was considering Alexander, Nathan, and Julian all at the same time." The rest came out in a rush. "She married you only because, at the time, they were treating me better than they treated her. Once she calms down, she may still go back to them."My mother stood up at once to take hold of her. "Vivian, that's enough."Vivian threw off my mother's hand. "If Roman knew everything about her past, he would leave her. Then the three of them would be around her again, and Mom would look at nobody but her."She was shaking with sobs. "I know that chair isn't mine. The gown and the bedroom aren't mine either. But every time I got one more thing, I thought it meant they wouldn't send me away. I never want to go back to having no one."The ballroom was completely still.Alexander, Nat

Sophie Grant's wedding was at a hotel on Boston Harbor. I entered the ballroom on Roman's arm, and the conversation died in waves. For ten solid years, all of Boston society had been waiting for me to choose a husband from Alexander, Nathan, and Julian. Nobody had expected the man beside me to be Roman, the heir to Black Harbor, a man everyone feared and few respected.Plenty of people muttered that I had married into Black Harbor out of spite, and some guessed privately that Roman would soon tire of a wife who had been spoiled since birth. I paid no attention to any of it.At the family table the fourth chair was still in its place, the silver plate restored, and the person sitting in it was Vivian. The moment my mother saw me she signaled Vivian to stand. "That's Evelyn's seat."The color went out of Vivian's face. She braced a hand on the table edge and got up, her voice faint. "I didn't know you were coming back. I'll move right now."Every guest in the room was looking at her.I d
