Chapter 7

Author: Palma W
Before I left, I asked the three of them to meet me at the private club.

My mother and the three men had already chartered a plane for two days later to take Vivian to Canada. Once Vivian was out of the country, Black Harbor couldn't enforce the engagement. Everyone was busy planning her escape, and no one knew I had already signed.

I brought three boxes with me.

The first held the silver pen Alexander gave me. At sixteen, when I was accused of cheating at school, he wrote the appeal with that pen himself and told me that no matter how the whole world judged me, he would always be on my side.

The second held the old stethoscope Nathan used as a student. The first time I had a panic attack and was taken to the hospital, he pressed it into my hand and made me listen to his steady heartbeat, and told me that as long as it was beating he would never walk away from me.

The third held a music box Julian made by hand. It played my favorite song from childhood, and inside the lid he had engraved a line. The fourth chair will always be waiting for you.

The three of them arrived one after another. Alexander glanced at the boxes on the table. "Are you still upset about the budget?"

"No." I pushed all three boxes across to them. "I'm not going to choose any one of you. Those unspoken engagements between us end here."

Nathan's face darkened first. Julian forced a smile, dismissing my words as a fit of temper. "Evelyn, there are two days left before the wedding. Once Vivian is safely out, we'll put everything back the way it was."

Alexander picked up the thread. "Your black card will be unfrozen tomorrow."

"We'll restore your priority on the red-button system too," Nathan added.

Julian took a brand new nameplate out of his pocket, my name engraved on it as before. "The chair has always been yours. When the wedding is over I'll fit the plate back on it myself."

I looked at that new nameplate and the whole thing struck me as absurd. "Everything you've planned assumes Vivian is the one who leaves," I said. "What if the one who leaves is me?"

All three of them fell silent. After a moment Alexander frowned. "Don't use that to threaten us. Black Harbor is not somewhere you run off to when you're in a mood."

"And don't let Vivian hear you," Nathan said. "She'll think you're blaming her."

I was about to tell them that I was the one who had signed the contract when something crashed to the floor outside the club door.

Vivian was on her knees in the corridor with her luggage scattered around her, digging through it in a panic and crying. "My passport is gone! Without a passport I can't go to Canada, and they'll send me to Black Harbor."

My mother came hurrying after her, her face drawn and pale. "Evelyn, put your own business aside and help us find the passport."

"I was just about to explain—"

"Your sister is frightened out of her mind. Why do you have to pick this moment?"

The same line as always. As long as Vivian was frightened, whatever I needed was pushed aside until some later time.

I crouched down and helped her gather her things, finally finding the passport between the sofa cushions. Vivian gripped my hand tight. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

I didn't pull my hand back. I put the passport in her palm. "You aren't going to marry into Black Harbor."

She stared for a second, then threw her arms around me, sobbing.

Everyone there thought I had finally given in and agreed to help her get out of the engagement. Nobody asked how I could be so sure.

I left the three boxes holding our history on the table at the club. Back at the estate, I put the sapphire ring my mother had given me at eighteen back in its case. That ring was the token of all three unspoken engagements.

Julian happened to walk in as I was taking it off. He caught my hand and ran his thumb over the bare spot at the base of my ring finger. "In a few days, you'll put it back on."

"Julian, has it occurred to you that I won't ever put it on again?"

He sighed. "Every time you're angry, you talk as if it's final, but you can never bring yourself to follow through."

I didn't correct him again. Back in the Winter House, I changed my train ticket from the day of the wedding to that same night.

They thought they still had two whole days for me to cool off and make peace. But in two hours, I would be gone from Boston.

  • My Three Fiances Betrayed Me, So I Married the Heir   Chapter 20

The wind off the sea cut to the bone. I sat on the black rocks and read every page of the divorce papers. The love and devotion of those twenty-six years hadn't all been lies. Alexander really had protected me with everything he had. Nathan really had put my safety first. Julian really had climbed onto the roof and built me moonlight from three hundred silver lanterns. My mother truly loved me, and Vivian was never a villain scheming to steal my life.Precisely because all of that love had been real, the losses and hurts that followed cut so deeply.I finally understood: being loved by everyone didn't mean I had to give up my boundaries. Having a kind heart didn't mean I had to keep sacrificing myself to make up for someone else's misfortune. Kindness should be something I chose, not an obligation other people could draw on whenever they liked. It was fully dark before I started back. Roman was still in the study. He didn't ask where I had been, and he hadn't quietly checked whether th

Once my mother was out of danger, I scrolled through the whole chat from beginning to end.Giving Vivian the moonstone crown wasn't a spur-of-the-moment impulse. Giving her my chair at the club wasn't an attendant's mistake. Freezing the black card, reassigning the driver, taking over my bedroom, and changing the priority on the emergency system were not careless oversights made in the middle of chaos.Every one of those decisions was worked out among the three of them. The day after the Black Harbor engagement was confirmed, Alexander was the first to argue that Vivian had only just come home and was already being married off, so for this last month she ought to have everything I had always had. Nathan believed I had lived my whole life inside a protective shell and that giving way briefly would do me no real harm. Julian decided that although I was stubborn, I was soft underneath, and that as long as the three men presented a united front, I would soon learn to share. Then they divid

The tide tower was less than a mile from the cottage, a ten-minute walk in good weather. But with the storm raging, every step sank both feet into what felt like a bottomless white abyss.Roman walked half a pace ahead and to one side. He didn't choose the route for me. He only reached out to steady my arm when the wind knocked me sideways. Using scraps of childhood memory, I found a sheltered path. A little farther on, a dark coat lay at the base of the tower. It was my mother's."Mom!" I shouted.A faint reply came from behind the heavy tower door.My mother was slumped against the cold stone wall, her right foot bent at a wrong angle, her lips blue with cold. She had wrapped her whole coat around Vivian and had nothing on but a thin knit sweater.Vivian was curled up in the corner of the tower, muttering the same things over and over. "I didn't leave her on purpose, I only wanted to find a signal. She's the one who insisted on coming after me. I told her to go back and she wouldn't

Whenever I was in trouble before, Alexander was always the first to take charge. He was used to giving orders and certain he always knew best. But on the night of the blizzard, he stood at the cold doors of the hotel, stripped of all his pride, and asked me for help.Alexander, Nathan, and Julian had already searched every place in Boston my mother regularly went. Julian accessed the vehicle-tracking system and traced the car onto the coastal highway heading north, where the storm had swallowed the signal whole."The last location is around Blue Bay." Julian's finger stopped on the screen, his voice tightly controlled. "I can keep reading the in-car records, but that's Eleanor's and Vivian's private data, and I don't want to make decisions for anyone on my own anymore."Nathan played a fragment of audio saved on his phone. Howling wind filled the earpiece, most of the words torn to pieces, only a few of them coming through. "Blue Door... Vivian, don't run... wait for me...""She said B

After she said it, the tears ran down her cheeks. She looked nothing like someone coolly exposing a secret in triumph. She looked as if the floor were giving way beneath her and the words had escaped in panic. "She was considering Alexander, Nathan, and Julian all at the same time." The rest came out in a rush. "She married you only because, at the time, they were treating me better than they treated her. Once she calms down, she may still go back to them."My mother stood up at once to take hold of her. "Vivian, that's enough."Vivian threw off my mother's hand. "If Roman knew everything about her past, he would leave her. Then the three of them would be around her again, and Mom would look at nobody but her."She was shaking with sobs. "I know that chair isn't mine. The gown and the bedroom aren't mine either. But every time I got one more thing, I thought it meant they wouldn't send me away. I never want to go back to having no one."The ballroom was completely still.Alexander, Nat

Sophie Grant's wedding was at a hotel on Boston Harbor. I entered the ballroom on Roman's arm, and the conversation died in waves. For ten solid years, all of Boston society had been waiting for me to choose a husband from Alexander, Nathan, and Julian. Nobody had expected the man beside me to be Roman, the heir to Black Harbor, a man everyone feared and few respected.Plenty of people muttered that I had married into Black Harbor out of spite, and some guessed privately that Roman would soon tire of a wife who had been spoiled since birth. I paid no attention to any of it.At the family table the fourth chair was still in its place, the silver plate restored, and the person sitting in it was Vivian. The moment my mother saw me she signaled Vivian to stand. "That's Evelyn's seat."The color went out of Vivian's face. She braced a hand on the table edge and got up, her voice faint. "I didn't know you were coming back. I'll move right now."Every guest in the room was looking at her.I d
