Chapter 4

Penulis: Noorie
The iron gates of the estate slammed shut behind us, the heavy clanging sound mimicking the finality in my chest.

“Let him rot in his own arrogance, Ares,” Lucian spat, his hands trembling with rage as he gripped the steering wheel. “He has completely lost his mind.”

I couldn't even find the breath to agree. The air in my lungs felt thick, like liquid lead. I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to ease the sudden, agonizing pressure building behind my ribs. When a violent cough tore from my throat, it didn’t bring relief—only the metallic taste of copper.

Dark, thick blood splattered against the dashboard.

“Ares? Oh my god, Ares, look at me!” Lucian’s voice panicked, his hands frantically searching the console for something to wipe my face.

The world began to blur into a smear of gray and black. The last thing I heard was the desperate, erratic thumping of Lucian’s heart as he pulled me into his arms, screaming for help.

While the doctors were strolling me to the emergency ward, I watched Lucian calling Hades in desperation and then cursing him in rage for declining his call. In the meantime, he would whisper a few comforting words to me and that he would find the cure.

The last time I heard him, he was still begging Hades to arrange the best healers for me. I raised my hands to ask him to give up. He wasn't going to send any aid, not when he believed I didn't need any.

But then I realised the suffocating weight that had burdened my chest for years was entirely gone. I felt light. Weightless.

Turning around, I saw a chaotic flurry of doctors and nurses rushing into an emergency bay. Lucian was there, pacing the floor, violently chewing his thumbnail down to the quick.

“Lucian?” I called out, stepping toward him.

He didn't look up. I reached out to touch his arm, but my fingers melted right through his leather jacket, grasping nothing but empty air.

Panic seized me. I rushed into the treatment room, passing effortlessly through the solid swing doors. There, stretched out under the harsh fluorescent lights, was my own body. A doctor was shaking his head, drawing a sterile white sheet over my pale, unmoving face.

Time of death: 14:22.

I was dead.

The realization didn't bring terror; it brought a strange, hollow peace. My journey in that fragile, broken vessel was over.

Because my spirit was somehow anchored to the tragedy of my own passing, I couldn't leave the hospital's vicinity.

Lucian took care of everything. He was the one who signed the release forms, the one who picked out a simple casket, and the one who sat alone in the hospital chapel for hours, staring at the floor with bloodshot eyes.

He tried to call Hades twice—not out of respect, but out of a desperate, furious need to make him face what he had caused.

Both times, Hades declined the call, sending an automated text: “I am busy finalizing the venue for my ceremony with Hestia. Do not call unless it is an emergency regarding the clan.”

Lucian had simply thrown his phone against the chapel wall, letting the screen shatter into a spiderweb of cracks.

Watching him, a profound sense of regret washed over me. I had spent the last five years of my life entirely consumed by a man who viewed me as a transaction, completely blind to the quiet devotion of the brother who actually stood by my side. I had wasted my living years chasing a shadow.

On the third morning, the day of my scheduled cremation, Lucian finally left the hospital. He dressed in a dark, exhausted gray suit, his face hollowed out by sleeplessness.

I didn't understand yet why my soul was bound to Lucian and had to follow him wherever he went. But as he drove his car to his home, he was welcomed with a huge setup of Hades’s Blood bonding Ceremony.

Lucian's hands clenched into fists as he watched Hades taking vows with Hestia. He looked happy, content, and proud.

“How ironic, Ares. They are throwing their grand ceremony on the same day as your funeral,” he whispered as if he knew I was standing right next to him.

Even in death, hearing those words felt like a phantom blade piercing my soul.

The next second, Hades walked up to him and barked. “Lucian. Look at the state of you. You’re late, you look like a vagrant, and you’ve been ignoring my directives for three days. Is this still about Ares?”

Lucian remained silent. He didn't look angry anymore. He just looked empty.

“Where is she?” Hades demanded, his voice echoing off the high stone walls. “I sent the keys to the border apartment to her phone, but the system shows she never accessed the network. Tell her that she has only one night to move out or else I’ll dump everything that belongs to her.”

“Then dump them!” Lucian yelled, “She doesn't need them anyway. And you do not need to worry about the place she is staying. She has found a new place, Hades. A place where no one can kick her out.”

“She is lying beneath white stone, Hades. Her residence is our Clan's graveyard. She doesn't need your apartment anymore because… she is dead!”

I was given a new life. A life I desperately wanted months ago, to be with Hades for eternity. But, not anymore. I put the foyer on fire. The coffin I was placed into was burned before my eyes. My past life was erased. Hades would never know I exist in the world. Then I turned to Lucian's room. He was taking a shower. ‘Goodbye, Lucian.’ I whispered in a low voice, ‘In this life or other, you will always remain a brother to me.’ I then carefully placed my brother’s locket and a letter near his bed and jumped out of his window. ***Epilogue Lucian's eyes widened in shock as he recognised Ares’s locket lying on his bed. “This… this wasn't here before!” He whispered. The locket belonged to Ares’s brother, whom she lost years ago. After that, she never parted with that locket. Even after her death, he had buried her along with it. He grabbed the letter lying beneath it. It read. [You know how to find me, brother!] Lucian’s lips curled into a smile. He shed tears of joy. “She is back

"Say it again," Hades whispered, a sound far more terrifying than his earlier wails. His fangs extended, glistening with a feral hunger for vengeance. "Tell me what you did to my Ares."Hestia choked, her eyes widening in genuine terror as she clawed at his iron wrists. The sophisticated, scheming woman was gone, replaced by a desperate animal trying to breathe. "Hades... please... it was... it wasn't like that...""You bartered with her safety," Lucian stepped forward, his voice a freezing current that locked the room in place. Jex and Mina blocked the exits, their weapons drawn, eyes burning with a righteous fury. "You orchestrated her torment. You handed her to the monsters.""I... I didn't mean to kill her!" Hestia gasped out, her face turning a dangerous shade of purple. "I… I only wanted you to love me..."With a sickening crack, he slammed her down onto the marble floor. He didn't kill her immediately. Death was too merciful. What followed was a display of brutality that made ev

The cemetery became an altar of absolute silence, broken only by the harrowing sound of Hades’s undone weeping. He held my decaying body against his chest, completely unbothered by the scent of mortality and death that clung to my skin. His tears washed over my pale cheeks, mixing with the dirt Hestia’s men had so ruthlessly upturned. The High Lord, the unbreakable pillar of the vampire clan, was utterly brought to his knees."Ares... please... I’m sorry. I’m so sorry," he sobbed, his voice cracking into thousands of broken pieces. He rocked me back and forth, a desperate, maddened attempt to breathe warmth back into a corpse.Lucian, Jex, and Mina stood in grim silence, their expressions hardened into blocks of ice."I loved you," Hades wailed, his chest heaving as he buried his face in my hair. "I never stopped loving you, Ares! Hestia meant nothing... she was nothing! I only brought her close because I was angry. I was so damn pissed at you for defying me, for walking away... I wan

‘No…’ I screamed. But no one could hear it. I walked up to Hades. Holding his hand, I whispered, ‘You must not allow it, Hades. I’m not a vampire, but a human. My body will decay if you let her do this.’‘You didn't care about me when I was alive. At least let me stay at peace when I’m already dead.’Hades turned to look sideways, his eyes locked with mine. For a brief moment, I felt he could hear me. But, the next second, he sank to my grave, weeping and grieving. It was as if he was unable to process what was happening around me; his mind had gone blank. But what is the use of those tears and regret? When I was alive, he prioritized Hestia over me, and even after my death, he didn't stop her from hurting me.Just when I thought they would do the worst possible things to my grave, a cold and infuriated voice echoed. “How dare you utter such words against Ares standing upon her grave? Her soul must be hurting watching you here. Get lost!” It was Lucian.“Lucian is right!” Jex joined

The iron gates of the Clan’s cemetery groaned as Lucian pushed them open, a heavy, scraping sound that felt entirely too loud in the morning mist.I drifted just behind Lucian, though my eyes were fixed on Hades. He walked a few paces back, his stride stiff, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his neck strained. He was still wearing that mask of arrogant disbelief, but beneath it, I could see the subtle, frantic twitch in his fingers. He was looking for a stage. He was waiting for me to jump out from behind a monument, laughing at his expense, proving him right. But as we rounded the stone mausoleum and the central burial grounds came into view, the mask shattered.A small crowd of people stood huddled together in the damp grass. These weren't actors hired for a play. It was my inner circle—the fiercely loyal vampires and friends who were aware of what I was going through. Mina, my closest confidante, was collapsed on her knees, her shoulders shaking with violent, rib-cracking

The silence that followed Lucian’s outburst was suffocating. For a second, the grand music of the blood-bonding ceremony seemed to falter, swallowed by the sheer weight of his words.I stood right beside Lucian, my translucent hand hovering over his trembling shoulder. I wanted to soothe the agonizing tension in his spine, but I could only watch.Hades didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, mocking sneer curled his lips. He let out a dry, humorless laugh that cut through me deeper than any physical blade ever could.“Dead?” Hades barked, crossing his arms over his chest. “Is this the new script the two of you wrote? Tell me, Lucian, did she practice those tears before sending you here? It’s a pathetic play, even for her.”“Hades, shut up,” Lucian whispered, his voice dangerously low.“No, I won’t,” Hades countered, stepping closer, his eyes flashing with a mix of irritation and arrogance. “She’s spent years trying to anchor herself to my side. And now, on the day of my bonding with Hestia, sh
