Chapter 42: A Real Nightmare

We stopped in front of a nondescript building with a simple, dirty stone facade and glass doors. A sign indicated that the small shop on the first floor was a real estate agency.

I was confused. Questions swirled in my mind, including whether Cassian was there to buy a new property. As soon as we stepped out of the car, we were surrounded by Cassian’s men, though of course, discreetly. Someone was already waiting at the door, ready to open it.

The moment we crossed the threshold, everything was locked down. Curtains were drawn, plunging the place into shadow.

I looked around, but there was no one. The desks were empty, computers turned off. That’s when I realized this was one of Cassian’s front businesses. Everyone inside was his man—armed and wearing serious expressions. I couldn’t move, paralyzed by the scene before me. I felt Cassian’s hand on my head and looked up at him, startled. He merely smiled and leaned in, whispering in my ear.

“Wait here—I won’t be long.” With

My hand hung in the air as Cassian walked away with firm steps. I opened my mouth, wanting to protest, to beg him to stay no matter what might happen, but no sound came out. The door closed slowly, the soft click of the lock echoing in the silence. I sighed, my hand resting on my chest, my heartbeat racing. That sigh was a mix of disappointment and relief at Cassian’s departure. I approached the door, touching the cold wood. “This is better, especially for me,” I whispered, pressing my forehead against it. The sound of footsteps snapped me back to alertness. I stepped away, wondering if it might be the same person from earlier, but then I heard voices—indicating at least two men outside my room. I fell silent, biting my lip as I listened intently to the conversation drifting from the hotel corridor. “I didn’t sign up for this babysitting gig,” one of the men said, and the other laughed. “You’re complaining? The Boss said he’d pay us double to stand here doing nothing.”

I wanted to ask more, to understand what Cassian was talking about, but the words died as he pressed his lips to my skin again, slowly trailing from my shoulder up to my neck. “You say you wouldn’t betray me, but I can’t trust you. I can’t trust anyone.” There was more than distrust in his voice—there was resentment, pain. “Who hurt you so badly?” The words slipped from my lips before I could stop them. The look Cassian gave me was impossible to decipher. He didn’t seem angered by my question, but it was clear I wouldn’t get an answer. I bit my lip, curbing my curiosity, and he smiled. His eyes narrowed slightly, his lips parting just a fraction. “I could answer, but first…” Cassian took my hand, lifting it to his face. The tip of his tongue brushed the inside of my wrist, warm. “Answer me honestly.” “I have no reason to lie,” I replied promptly, making his smile widen even more. “Then, if I told you that little punk has been deceiving you all this time, what wou

All those doubts and fears were suffocating me. My throat seemed to tighten more with each passing second, blocking the air from flowing freely. I brought my hands to my neck, tugging at the collar of my pajamas as if that could help me breathe better, but nothing seemed to work. I looked up for help, but Cassian remained cold and distant, his back turned to me as I felt my mind darkening further. My teeth clenched, my chest searing from the lack of air, until, in a surge of extreme anger, I stood, raising my fist and striking Cassian, who turned to face me. “You…” I said, gasping for breath. “It’s all your fault!” I shouted with all my strength. “What did you say?” His low, hissing voice made me tremble for a moment, but I was determined. If I had to choose, I’d rather be killed by this man in this hotel room than return to the clutches of Diane and her son. I filled my lungs and stepped forward, standing face-to-face with Cassian. “You wanted to buy me; you dragge

This was going far beyond what I’d imagined. The closeness of our bodies, his voice in my ear, the heat of his skin, even the pulsing against the palm of my hand. So many sensations, so many stimuli, that my mind began to unravel. I found myself craving more of Cassian. My ears yearned for more of his voice and his crude words. My skin begged for the rough touch of his calloused, scarred hands. My hands trembled to trace every inch of his skin, following each scar one by one. My eyes searched his for the gleam of desire, pleasure, and lust that I so desperately craved. I arched my back, rising onto my tiptoes, trying to bring my lips to his, but he pulled away. I looked at him in confusion, and he merely smiled, tilting his head slightly. He was provoking me, testing me to see how far I’d be willing to yield. What Cassian didn’t know was that I’d already crossed all my limits and would give him everything—provided I could be sure he desired me as much as I desired him. My

I pressed my hands against Cassian’s chest, trying to push him away, but to no avail. He was like a fortress, a brick wall impossible to move. I felt intimidated by him—by his invasive questions and assertions that left me utterly disoriented. Even if I wanted to deny it, even if my mind screamed that I should resist his advances, my lips seemed to disagree and act of their own accord. “I already told you, I have no intention of appearing as anything more than an ordinary woman in your eyes, sir,” Cassian growled, his silver eyes gleaming as I sensed danger radiating from them. Without warning or signal, he leaned in. One of his hands grabbed the fabric of the pajamas I was wearing and yanked it roughly, exposing my bare shoulder. His lips closed over my skin, his warm tongue sliding slyly before his teeth clamped down hard on my flesh. A sharp pain shot through me. I gripped his shoulders, pushing with all my strength, but he pressed me even harder against the wall wi
