Six?

Bile washed in my stomach, but I steeled my expression. This wasn’t about me; it was about Ezra. About learning he could trust people not to hurt and take advantage of him.

“It was a group home. I hated it. It was loud and scary and some of the kids were mean. But George the manager was the worst. He caught me stealing an extra cookie once after dinner and hit me so hard I blacked out.”

“Oh my God,” I breathed.

“He was just one of many.” The light dimmed from his eyes. “It wasn’t always the foster parents. Sometimes, it was the other kids.”

“Did… did anyone ever…?” I couldn’t say it.

“Touch me?” Shame washed over him, so I moved closer, until our knees nudged together.

“I was never… raped.” He took a shuddering breath I felt all the way down to my soul. “But stuff happened a few times. Stuff I can’t... I can’t talk about it, Leigh. Not yet.”
