Chapter 3

Kylo's POV

The smile vanished from Cindy's face. "You're breaking up with me over a bangle? Kylo, since when did you become this petty?"

"Yeah. It's definitely because of the bangle."

Eugene hurried to take it off. "Kylo, don't be mad. I'll take it off right now. You and Cindy have been together for nine years. You can't let me ruin that."

In his panic, he struggled so hard that the bangle rubbed his wrist raw, turning it red. He hissed in pain.

Cindy immediately grabbed his hand, stopping him. "What are you doing? You didn't do anything wrong."

She turned back to me. "He's barely recovered. Do you really have to humiliate him in front of everyone?"

I couldn't stand to stay another second. I turned and walked out.

Behind me, the room filled with hushed whispers.

"That kid's got quite the temper."

"Exactly. A woman has to play the game sometimes. He could've just looked the other way."

An anxious Eugene piped up. "Cindy, you should go after him. He's upset. What if something happens to him?"

She scoffed. "We've been together for nine years. He's a 30-year-old man. Who else but me would even want him?"

She raised her voice on purpose. "And if someone keeps throwing a fit, I guess we'll just have to postpone the wedding!"

A text message from the manager at the suit shop came, along with a photo of the suit.

"Mr. Irwin, the deposit is nonrefundable. You came in so many times to find this. Are you sure you don't want it anymore?"

I stared at the screen for a long time. I had tried on 17 different suits in that store all alone. Every photo I sent Cindy had earned the same cold reply. "Busy now. You decide."

It turned out that one person's hopes were never enough to carry the future of two people.

"I'll proceed with the cancellation, still."

The next day, I went to the office.

Sitting on my desk was a transfer notice. "Due to Kylo Irwin's recent decline in work performance, he will be reassigned to the administrative support department."

A moment later, a message was posted in the company group chat announcing Eugene's promotion to supervisor. Then, I saw the proposal.

I had stayed up seven nights to work on it and revised it 15 times. Somehow, my name had been replaced with Eugene's. I scrolled to the bottom of the document.

The person who left the comments was Cindy. I immediately called her.

"You saw the notice, didn't you? I was about to call," she said nonchalantly.

"Cindy, why is Eugene's name on my proposal?"

She chuckled. "You embarrassed him in front of everyone at Newman Estate yesterday. He went home and was upset all night. I'm giving him the proposal to comfort him. Think of it as a small punishment for you, too."

Eugene's voice came through the phone, slightly nasal from crying. "Kylo, if you're upset, I'll give the supervisor position back to you."

Cindy instantly objected. "Why would you do that? He deserves this. Kylo, as long as you're willing to cooperate and apologize to Eugene, the wedding plans will resume. Naturally, I'll save the next promotion opportunity for you."

I honestly found it ridiculous. She was using my hard work and effort to make another man happy.

To that, I said, "Fine."

After hanging up, I submitted my resignation letter, then clicked "Confirm" on the job offer I had received abroad.

  • Saving a Seat for No One   Chapter 11

I had a habit. Whenever I ate, watched a movie, or rode the bus, I always saved an empty seat next to me. I stubbornly believed that Cindy Newman would one day show up in my city and fill that seat.During the three years of our long-distance relationship, I held onto that empty seat through countless nights of high fever, through the despair of losing my mother. In the end, every last bit of hope inside me had run dry.Cindy gave her time, attention, privileges—even a bowl of soup—to someone else. She taught me that the empty seat wasn't waiting because she couldn't come. It was because she never cared to show up. By the time she finally did, there was no seat left for her. After returning to the country, Cindy bought the apartment in Southlake that I'd used to live in.She restored it exactly as it had been the day I left, even retrieving the pink toothbrush from the trash and placing it back beside the sink.Every night, she sat alone on the couch in an apartment furnished for

Cindy reached out with her burned hand, trying to grab my arm. I stepped back and dodged her touch."Ms. Newman, please mind your behavior," I said as cold as the autumn rain falling over Spair."I'm sorry, Kylo."She pulled a black velvet box from her coat's pocket. "I sold the apartment and my shares and drove Eugene away. I gave up everything."She opened the box, revealing a dazzling ring inside. "Please, give me another chance. Let me make up for everything I owe you from the past three years."I looked at the ring. "Cindy… Do you honestly think we can start over?"Three years ago, I had stood outside a jewelry store window, staring at that very ring for a long time. Back then, Cindy had been busy replying to Eugene's messages."Stop staring. It's just another overpriced piece of jewelry, a total waste of money."I raised my eyes and met her gaze without any emotion. "You looked at my medical records, didn't you?"Cindy's face went pale. Her lips quivered uncontrollably.

I tapped open the photos. In the picture, Cindy stood in a messy kitchen wearing a wrinkled shirt. A pot lay shattered on the floor, and the overcooked potato soup had splattered everywhere. The back of her hand was swollen and covered in blisters, the burn marks painfully obvious. Another photo showed her sitting in a repair shop, her back facing the camera. The email read, "The bracelet you gave Ms. Newman broke, so she took it in for repairs. The repairman told her it was a discontinued limited-edition piece, so there was no way to purchase its unique clasp."She also checked your purchase records and found out that when you bought her that bracelet, you sold the gold necklace your mother had left you."I stared at those words, failing to feel anything. The bracelet broke. The soup spilled. At last, she finally remembered the heavy price hidden behind those things. The second email arrived right after."Kylo, Ms. Newman went to the medical records department at the city hosp

Eugene's international call came three days later. When I answered, his voice was frighteningly hoarse and panicked. "Kylo, it's me! Please don't hang up!""Speak.""Kylo, I'm begging you. Please send me the follow-up data models for that proposal! The client has put the project on hold—said there are critical flaws in the data projections. They're threatening to sue me for commercial fraud!"The company is on the verge of firing me… Please, Kylo. I'm out of help. Please save me!"I picked up my coffee and took a sip. That proposal was something I had created after seven sleepless nights. The entire underlying logic chain only existed in my head.He thought changing the name would make it his, but a stolen crown would eventually become too heavy to bear."That was your proposal, supervisor," I replied flatly. "Since your name is on it, you should take responsibility for it yourself."Eugene's voice sharpened. "How am I supposed to take responsibility? The tens of millions in da

  • Saving a Seat for No One   Chapter 7

Kylo's POVI rented an apartment with a balcony in Spair's 13th arrondissement. Downstairs was a bakery that sold croissants, and every morning, the scent of warm butter started my day.It had been two months since I left Southlake. I had changed my phone number, snapped my old SIM card in half, and tossed it into a trash bin at the airport. My life finally had a reset. For the first time in years, breathing felt calm and easy. The only updates I received from home came from Kevin, who sent me regular emails."Mr. Irwin, the one million dollars used for the property purchase has been returned to your original account. Additionally, Ms. Newman transferred two million dollars to your personal account."The remark says, 'Compensation.'"The doorbell rang. The building's doorman walked in, pushing a massive white garment box. "Mr. Irwin, this was shipped here urgently from your country. The shipping cost was unbelievably high."I cut open the seal. Inside the garment bag was the su

Third-Person POVThis was the first time in three years that Cindy had stepped into the apartment Kylo rented in Southlake. She entered his birthday into the keypad lock out of habit. The door chimed open. The shoe cabinet was empty. The pair of charcoal-gray men's slippers Kylo had shown her many times over video calls was gone. She walked into the bathroom, her eyes falling on the sink. There was only a single gray rinse cup left behind. Inside the trash can lay an unopened pink toothbrush and a mug printed with her initials.Kylo had prepared those things for her. He always said that if she ever wanted to come back someday, there had to be a place for her in their home.A lump slowly formed in Cindy's throat. She pushed open the bedroom door. On the bedside table, the framed photo of them, which had once stood there for nine years, now lay face down. She walked over and slowly turned it upright. Her voice echoed through the empty room. "Kylo?"She pulled out her phone and di
