Gesare

The motel smells like bleach I notice it the second I step inside thanks to the nausea I have been experiencing.

It’s not unbearable just persistent. Like it’s soaked into the walls, the curtains, the thin carpet beneath my shoes. The kind of smell that tells you a hundred different stories have passed through here, none of them particularly happy.

I tighten my grip on the strap of my bag as I walk up to the reception desk.

The man behind it barely looks at me.

“Room?” he asks flatly.

Gesare"Can I start the treatment after I have the baby?" I ask her sitting back down, "I only have five more months to go." "You can but the" her phone rings the sharp sound slices through the silence, making me flinch slightly. She glances at the screen and something in her expression shifts slightly.“Excuse me, I have to take this,” she says softly. She turns the phone just enough that I see the name, of course it was Kumba calling her. “Please don’t answer that,” I say quickly, my voice lower than I expect. She pauses and looks at me confused “Gesare”“Please,” I repeat, softer now. “Don’t tell him I am here.”There is something in my voice I don’t recognize when I say it. “He has helped me enough,” I continue, my fingers tightening slightly in my lap. “And I appreciate it, I really do.” I swallow.“But he has his own life. His own personal relationships he should be focusing on.”Moraa’s face flashes in my mind, how furious she had been when she saw me in kumba's house, and

The sharp sound slices through the silence, making me flinch slightly. She glances at the screen and something in her expression shifts, just slightly.“Excuse me,” she says softly still holding the ringing phone. She turns the phone just enough that I see the name, it's Kumba. “Please don’t answer that,” I say quickly, my voice lower than I expected but loud enough for her to hear. She pauses and looks at me.“Gesare” she starts, but I immediately cut her off. “Please,” I repeat, softer now. “Don’t tell him I am here.”There iw something in my voice I don’t recognize.“He has helped me enough,” I continue, my fingers tightening slightly in my lap. “And I appreciate it, I really do.” I swallow.“But he has his own life. A few minutes later, I am standing in front of a narrow door with peeling paint, a small brass number hanging slightly crooked.Ro

KumbaI check the time again, my thumb hovering over my phone screen as I lean back slightly in my chair at the dining table, I am starting to get irritated, I hate waiting. It's seven thirty eight, dinner was supposed to be at seven and she knows it.I glance toward the staircase, half expecting to hear footsteps soft, hesitant, the kind that always made me aware of her presence before I even saw her.But there is nothing, it's just silence. I exhale slowly, setting my phone down on the table.“She is probably just taking her time,” I mutter under my breath. It’s not unusual really. A small frown tugs at my lips as images from her this morning in a towel come back to me, but then I remember how I walked out and the irritation comes back. I shift slightly in my seat, my gaze drifting back to the staircase. The staff had finished setting everything minutes ago before quietly disappearing, leaving the space to me.I reach for the glass of water in front of me, taking a slow sip as I

GesareI don’t remember the walk, that’s the strangest part. One moment I’m standing at the bottom of those stairs, watching Kumba kiss her like I never existed and the next, I’m outside.Like my body made the decision for me before my mind could catch up.The air hits my face, warm and dry, but it does nothing to steady the storm inside me. My grip tightens around the strap of my bag as I step out onto the road, not even bothering to look back.Because there’s nothing for me back there.I inhale deeply, forcing my feet to keep moving, one step after another, even though everything inside me feels heavy. My chest, my thoughts, my heart.Especially my heart.I don’t let myself think about it too much.About them, the way he was holding her or the way he didn't hesitate to kiss her, after all she was his fiancee a few weeks ago. The hospital comes into view sooner than I expect, its familiar structure standing tall and clinical against the sky. For a moment, I hesitate at the entrance,

GesareFor a few seconds after he leaves, I just stand there confused. Like my body hasn’t quite caught up with what just happened. The door clicks shut behind him, soft but final, and the sound seems to echo through the room louder than it should. I keep staring at it, half expecting it to open again half expecting him to walk back in and say something that makes sense of whatever that was.But it doesn’t open and he doesn’t come back.My fingers tighten slightly around the edge of the towel wrapped around my chest, and I let out a slow breath I didn’t even realize I was holding.“What just happened?” I whisper to myself. The words sound small.I swallow hard, blinking rapidly as the silence settles around me again. Just minutes ago, I was crying behind this same door, trying to piece myself together after everything his mother said. And then he came, knocking, calling my name like he cared, like it mattered and for a moment it did, but then he just left, Just like that, no explanat
