Fifty Seven

Brielle sat up in a rush, eyes wide like a deer caught in the headlights. She glanced down at the cream, duck-feathered duvet covering her, this wasn’t her bed?!

She hastily pulled back the duvet, praying to the moon goddess that she was still in her own clothes. A rush of relief ran through her as she noticed she was still in the clothing she had gone to see River in.

River… Brielle’s heart immediately sunk, an unsettled feeling developing at the pit of her stomach. He must have been devastated to wake up and find her no longer in his arms. They had finally put aside their stubborn egos and within hours, she had gone. Brielle suddenly felt cold, instantly missing her mate’s embrace.

Ignoring the unbearable soreness against the flesh of her feet, Brielle scurried from beneath the sheets to gaze out the window. As her hands rested against the ledge, a sense of numbness washed over her.
