Chapter 53: Warmth

MARIA

The warmth of last night lingered in my body, but it wasn’t enough. The pleasure I felt lying with Elias, being taken by him, wasn’t strong enough to carry me through the long hours of the night. It wasn’t enough to silence the storm in my chest or the racing of my heart.

Usually, whenever my heart raced like this, it was because of Elias, because of how much I loved him, or how much I longed for him. But not this time.

This time my heart pounded for an entirely different reason. Fear.

I was afraid. Afraid for Elias. Afraid for my little boy, Isaac. Afraid of what I saw in Lucia’s eyes the night before, the cold determination that promised she wouldn’t stop until she got what she wanted. Afraid of the faceless man who seemed to be pushing her, feeding her hatred, and who clearly had unfinished business with my husband.

And most of all, I was afraid of the thought creeping into my own mind. Afraid of what I might have to do, and what it might cost me.
