Meredith's POV

“Shit shit shit shit shit!” I muttered under my breath as I glanced at him. I definitely hadn’t planned for this to happen.

This was supposed to be a smooth job. Just inject him and leave!

I thought about the feast waiting for me back home. I mentally groaned. Dwayne didn’t have to see this! I had planned to reach out to him after it was done and inform him about the funeral arrangements.

"Dwayne," I forced a smile. "Sweetheart, what are you doing here?"

He wasn’t even listening to me, he was looking at the syringe that the stupid doctor was still holding. He stood frozen like an idiot.

"You were about to kill him. You were about to kill my father,” he yelled.

Stupid boy! Does he want the entire hospital to hear?

"Shut up!" I hissed and rushed to shut the door. “What are you saying?"

"You were just about to kill him," he said and I rolled my eyes. Here we go!

"Please, baby, just...just listen,” I tried. If I could reason with him, perhaps, he’d understand.

Dwayne POV I didn’t know how much I had missed the city until now. It hadn’t been that long since I left but some things seemed different. I let out a sigh as I glanced out the window. The cab curved past Central Park and moved towards the uptown hospital.I pressed my head against the cold window, trying to stop my knee from bouncing. Shane’s voice still echoed in my head from the call earlier that morning. “Dwayne, my Dad’s fading. You need to see him. I don’t know how long he has.”Mark.My father.I had been groomed to believe all along that Mark was my stepfather. I couldn’t believe that my mum would do that to me. I still couldn’t think of a reason for her to do that. The last time we spoke, we didn’t even look each other in the eye. I hated him for putting Shane before me when Shane was in the wrong. I thought about all the times he called me a disgrace, that I wasn’t worth his time.Still, even with all the rage we carried between us, the thought of Mark dying without see

Chapter 68: Wild Practice Meredith’s pov: They say you’d know it’s going to be a good day when you have a good sleep the night before. I guess that was true, because I hadn’t slept this well in a long time and today was the day.All my patience and pretence was going to finally pay off today.I walked slowly to the balcony, my hands trailing over the stair railings as I walked. A tall crystal flute balanced delicately between my fingers, I had grabbed it earlier from my secret stash. It was a Gordon ferrel 1922 champagne. The champagne inside shimmered like liquid gold, a poor imitation of the real thing that adorned my wrists and throat. I took a slow sip, letting my tongue swirl around the drink as I glanced out at the street. Below, the city moved in its usual hum of traffic and meaningless life. I watched it like a goddess gazing down on her creation. None of them knew what today meant. But I did. Today, I will finally be free.“Anita!” I called, my voice cutting through the s

Shane's POV He froze. I picked up the bottled water on the table, opened it and gulped down a fair amount. “In my bedroom?” I asked. “I know you're crazy but I deserve some privacy.”“What makes you think it was me?” “It's clearly not Xandra or your mom. She's too crazy to think about that,” I answered. “Don't talk about her like that!”“Why not?” I asked calmly turning my seat a little so I could look at him. “I don't have time for this,” he bickered. “You should,” I began, “especially now that I also won the bidding contract for the Carandan Oil pipeline.”His breath caught. “What?”He turned to me slowly shocked. “How did you..?”“Get the oil contract you have been after for three months? Well, you see here brother. You're not the only one who knows how to spy on the other. Thanks for giving me a heads up.”“You slimy…”I interrupted, talking proudly. “You should have more reliable people work for you. They slouch a lot.”“What are you up to?” He asked. “I don't know, brothe

Shane's POV I smiled warmly, watching Lucy sleep peacefully in the bed. I wore my jacket, and got out of the room. My eyes darted up and on the right side of the house by the second stairs was Dwayne, fixing his jacket buttons. Our eyes locked as he looked up and we didn't talk, looking at the other with invisible daggers. We moved our feet at the same time and looked away from each other, walking down the stairs. “About time we got an elevator,” I thought as I took the last step and headed for the front door. The bodyguards assigned got the car ready as I stepped out of the house, and one opened the door. I was about to get in when I spotted Dwayne in his grey suit, with one of his feet pushed into the car already. Our eyes locked again and we looked away, getting into the car. I smiled, noticing his nose and healed. “He fixed it,” I murmured as the car drove. I took out my phone and started to read the news. A couple few interested me and another a bunch of made up lies. M
