Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Perfect Timing
Blake finished dressing and stepped in front of me, holding my clothes in his hands like he intended to help me put them on.

"Come with me, honey."

He paused, voice low but steady. "Leila's parents saved my life. I can't just turn my back on their only daughter. Please come with me. Afterward, you can yell at me, hit me—whatever you want."

I froze for a moment, startled by his words, then pushed him away and dressed myself in silence.

"Let's go," I said, not sparing him a glance as I walked out the door, my face cold.

I hadn't taken more than a few steps when I felt a sudden warmth around my hand. I tried shaking it off, twice, but he wouldn't let go. I glared at him, clearly annoyed.

"Slow down, honey. It's dark."

Ignoring my anger completely, Blake kept his grip firm as he guided us toward the Burgman household.

Since the Burgman family elders had passed away, the army had taken care of Leila, letting her live alone in a large compound. Tonight, it was surrounded by people.

The first to spot her missing was Kristen Marx, who rushed over holding a note, her face lined with worry.

The note said: Blake, I don't want to be a burden anymore. I'm going to join my parents.

Blake's brows furrowed as he read the note. Without hesitation, he began issuing orders, directing everyone to split up and search.

Soon, voices calling out "Leila!" echoed across the island, especially along the shoreline.

Worried something might have truly happened, I joined the search, though I wasn't familiar with this coastal place. I figured the beaches were already swarming with people, so I decided to comb through the more hidden nooks and corners.

That's when I unexpectedly stumbled across something.

Leila turned, thrilled at the sound of footsteps, but the smile fell from her face the moment she saw me.

"You? What are you doing here? Where's Blake?"

Standing atop a rocky outcrop, Leila looked like a painting of resentment.

I let out a small, mocking laugh. "Really? Throwing your life away for a man who doesn't even see you? Is that worth it?"

Her face flushed red, then turned pale. She bit her lip hard before speaking. "What do you know? Blake and I grew up together. My family saved his life. If it weren't for you barging in, I would've been his wife!"

I let out a cold chuckle. "Oh please. If he actually cared about you, there wouldn't have been room for me to 'barge in,' would there? And let's not forget—we were engaged before we were even born. If we're talking about who came first, you don't even make the list. So listen carefully: he was never yours, and he never will be. Blake is my man."

I took a step closer, my voice sharper now. "But if I ever find out he's entertaining other thoughts, I'll break his legs and hand him over to you. Then you two can be miserable together. Not sure you'd even want that, though."

With that, I turned to leave. I'd found her—safe, not suicidal. Just another girl throwing a dramatic tantrum. I didn't have time to waste playing along.

But before I could take another step, she yanked me back and leaned in close, whispering in my ear, "Tell me, if the two of us fell into the sea at the same time, who do you think Blake would save?"

Before I could respond, she suddenly shoved me—hard.

Completely unprepared, I plunged into the cold, salty sea, swallowing mouthfuls of brine.

"Help! Blake, save me!" she screamed.

Before I could even muster a smile, a sharp voice rang out from the foyer."How dare you come back!"I sighed inwardly. 'So it's come to this, after all. 'I was just about to apologize when Blake stepped forward and knelt ahead of me. Facing my parents and grandfather inside, he spoke with sincerity in every word."This is all my fault. I should've come back earlier to explain and apologize. Whatever punishment you see fit, I won't complain. But Joyce's not well. Whatever punishment she should bear, I'll take it with her."Grandpa's expression remained unreadable, his face set in stone. But my mother… her smile folded every wrinkle on her face into one joyous map. If Grandpa weren't sitting right there, she probably would've rushed over to pull her son-in-law up and invite him to sit at the table."Grandpa," I chimed in quickly, trying to defuse the tension. "Come on, don't be mad. Look—Joyce and I are both doing so well now."Without waiting for Grandpa's reply, I hurried to t

As soon as the words left Leila's mouth, Vince broke into a cold sweat. Panic washed over his face as he rushed forward, grabbing Leila's arm. From where I stood, I caught the flash of menace in his eyes."Young lady," he said through clenched teeth, "you can eat recklessly, but you can't speak that way. Don't drag me down just to help Blake. I have a wife and kids. Aren't you worried about your reputation?"The moment he said that, Leila's eyes shifted, quick as a spark. She turned toward Commander Brack and Blake, tears welling up in her eyes."Blake... I'm sorry. I only did all this because I was jealous of Joyce, because she got to marry you. Just now, she pushed me to the ground because I brought up our memories together. I lost control of my mouth. You know it's always been you in my heart. Please don't be angry."She lowered her head and covered her face, looking every bit the picture of wounded innocence. Her words sent ripples through the gathered crowd. Their gazes drif

The island wasn't large, especially not the section occupied by the stationed unit.Apparently, Leila and Vince didn't care much about keeping things discreet. It wasn't long before rumors began to spread across the island. But neither Blake nor I were the kind to indulge in gossip. He was kept busy day in and day out with drills and assignments, while I, not wanting to remain idle, decided to do something of my own. After discussing it with Blake, I obtained a proposal in collaboration with the military. I was planning to open a food processing plant on the island, using local coconuts and seafood as raw materials. It would not only provide extra revenue for the troops but also offer a source of income to the island's residents.I hadn't expected to run into trouble so early.Full of confidence and ambition, I was ready to give it my all—until a typhoon hit, nearly destroying everything I'd worked for. I stood in front of the wrecked factory, wind-battered and disheveled. Without

In the days that followed, Leila didn't appear in front of me again.Instead, the neighborhood wives started showing up more often, bringing vegetables they'd grown themselves or inviting me to comb the shore for shellfish after the tide had gone out.Time passed in a quiet, unhurried rhythm. Slowly, I found myself falling in love with life on the island. Things between Blake and me grew steadier, more settled.Everything seemed to be heading in the right direction. But for some reason, a strange unease lingered in my chest, like something was off-kilter, though I couldn't say exactly what. Then one day, I returned home with a bag full of freshly gathered oysters, grinning with satisfaction, only to find Blake pacing anxiously by the courtyard gate, his brow furrowed. He held something in his hand, glancing down at it now and then, his whole body tense with worry. The moment he saw me, he rushed over and grabbed my arm."Oh? Gone for just a little while and you're already this wo

"Blake, you promised my parents you'd take care of me. And now you're just going to stand there and watch your wife bully me? If you hadn't gotten here in time, I'd be dead by now."Leila's eyes were bloodshot, her face full of wounded innocence as she looked up at Blake. The crowd around us turned their disapproving gazes on me."You're right," Blake said, glancing at her and giving a slight nod.Watching him, I cursed myself for ever marrying this man. I was about to go down swinging, drag him into the depths with me, when he suddenly stepped forward and gripped my hand tightly—so tightly I couldn't break free."Then let the investigators handle it," he said. "Given what just happened, it won't be hard to figure out the truth from the scene. If Joyce did it, I won't protect her. But if Joyce is being framed, I'm not letting it go either."The moment the words left his mouth, people in the crowd began nodding. Someone even ran off to bring the investigators over.Leila stood at

In the chaos of it all, I caught sight of Blake racing toward us, and beside me, Leila pretending to be flustered and afraid.A wave of anger surged in my chest. Men who flirt with every woman that passes by—they're the worst.Without wasting another second, I turned and swam hard toward her.A choice between the two of us? Did I look like the kind of woman who waited for a man to come save her?Not only would I save myself, but I wouldn't let her be saved by him either.Leila clearly hadn't expected me to know how to swim. Her expression was pure disbelief. When I reached her, she began thrashing wildly, trying to push me away. All the while, she kept crying out, "Blake, save me! Save me…"Watching her flail around like a hog before New Year's dinner, and seeing Blake already preparing to dive in, I didn't hesitate. I raised my hand and chopped her neck cleanly. She went limp instantly.Without an ounce of politeness, I dragged her back toward the shore.Thankfully, we hadn't
