Emma cleared her throat, watching the shop assistant pack up the items. She glanced at Jerry’s back and noticed he had taken off his suit jacket.

As if sensing her gaze, he turned to face her, and she quickly looked back at the assistant. When she risked a glance at Jerry again, she saw he had unbuttoned the top two buttons of his white dress shirt, revealing smooth skin and a hint of an inked tattoo.

*No wonder I kissed him,* Emma thought. She immediately blushed, frantically trying to shove the thought out of her mind.

She had been wondering how she’d managed to kiss his neck while he was wearing a full suit, and now she knew.

Trying to bridge the awkward silence, she said, "Um, boss, I’m sure your fiancée will be very pleased to receive these gifts."

She was trying to soothe his temper.

She’d learned that the best way to handle an angry person was with a little flattery. She couldn't lie—she was terrified. She had no idea what was going through his head; instead of his usual glare, his face was completely blank, and it gave her the creeps.

Jerry frowned, and Emma breathed a sigh of relief when he finally reacted. "And who told you these were for my fiancée?"

"Well, isn't she the only woman in your life , and you spent a fortune on all this," she reasoned.

"Mhm, true..." Jerry drawled thoughtfully, then continued, "Aren't you a woman?"

"Sure... I am," Emma replied, giving him an awkward look.

What kind of a question was that?

"And aren't you in my life?" Jerry asked, tilting his head to the side. He chuckled softly as he watched her confused expression.

The shop assistant dropped a leather bag, her eyes widening in shock.

She couldn't believe the cold-hearted CEO was actually chuckling. She felt an ugly glare snap toward her—actually, it was two. One from her boss, and the other from the CEO. She knew she was done for.

Her boss, Mrs. Donald, had strictly warned the staff never to anger this man. Everyone had been in a state of panic since he walked in, and Mrs. Donald had maintained a stiff, practiced smile the entire time, desperate to satisfy him.

"Don't ever drop my things on the floor again. Be careful," he warned.

He turned his cold gaze toward Mrs. Donald. "I didn't know you started employing such careless workers. She just mishandled my goods."

Mrs. Donald smiled anxiously, bowing repeatedly. "I’m so sorry for the inconvenience, Mr. Jerry. We will make sure it never happens again."

"You’d better, unless you don't want me shopping here anymore," Jerry threatened . before turning his attention back to his manager, who was currently glaring at him.

Emma wanted to smack him.

It was just clothes, not glass; why was he making such a fuss? And what did he mean by saying she was "in his life"? When had they agreed to that?

It wasn't like it would be the end of the world if he stopped shopping here, she thought—though that wasn't exactly true.

It would certainly be the end of this shop’s business, especially if he left a bad review. People would do anything for a man like him... it was a pity they hadn't met him in real life.

Emma remembered her favorite actress once claiming she was on a "diet" after a vacation, even though she was already thin enough to be snapped like a twig. Emma had followed the advice, hating every second of the month she spent eating nothing but fruits and vegetables.

God, the things people did for celebrities.

"Um, sir, not for long," she said, holding his gaze.

Jerry tilted his head, smiling. "Is that so, huh?" He nodded, then his face dropped back into a serious, blank mask. "Anyway, these are for you."

"Eh... "

"I mean, what do you mean?" Emma asked, her mouth forming an 'O.'

He must be joking right . but her boss never holes at least with that face.

She stared at the shopping bags and then back at his stern face. *Doesn't he ever actually smile?* she wondered, shoving the thought away.

"Don't make me repeat myself. The clothes and shoes are for you. I don't want you dressing like that in the office tomorrow. You’ll be following me on business trips, and I won't have you looking like that." He pointed a finger at her current outfit .

Jerry looked up and caught Emma’s wide, delighted smile. For a split second, his heart skipped a beat. He frowned, his hand moving unconsciously to his neck, right where her soft lips had been a few minutes ago.

Emma couldn't help the small smile that spread across her face ,all along she was thinking it for his fiance or probably someone else , but he was shopping for her . No wonder he kept using her size for reference.

she still wondered why he would do that instead of asking she said excitedly

"Thank you, boss, thank you so—"

"I don't need your thanks, Miss Jones."

"Oh, okay then. I promise I’ll work hard to help the company. I’ll work diligently, that I promise!" Emma clenched her fists, staring up at the ceiling with intense determination.

Jerry cleared his throat, pulling her attention back to him.

"And whose company are you planning to destroy? It’s certainly not mine, Miss Jones."

Seeing she was about to protest, he hushed her.

"Let me finish. I don't need empty declarations. You have a lot to learn, and if you make any mistakes, I’ll be deducting the damages from your salary until you’re left with a penny."

Emma gasped, clutching her chest.

This man.....

she thought shaking her head but didn't say anything knowing better than to argue with him .

She consoled herself by looking at the bags; at least the man had a tiny bit of good in him, not knowing what he was already planning with this

Emma came out of the room grinning from ear to ear. "Lu-Lu, I guess your parents finally remembered you!"Luan dropped the spoon filled with ice cream that was already in her mouth, spilling it back into the bowl. "Ew," Kristie said, scrunching her face in disgust as she looked at Luan’s face, watching the color drain away. Luan gulped before taking the phone with shaking hands. Hi, Dad," Luan said. After a moment of listening to her father’s request—the triplets were crying and her mother had new cravings—Luan pulled the phone away from her ear with a huge frown. *She is your wife, for goodness' sake,* Luan whispered to herself. Luan hung up. She tossed the phone onto the couch and slumped back, eyes shut tight. "My rest time is officially over.""I guess my resting time is over.""Yay, we’re going to see the twins!" Kristie said, giggling while clapping her hands.Luan peeked at Kristie with one eye, wondering why she was so excited. "They are just babies... babies with

"They are so cute," Kristie said, cupping her face with a huge grin as she opened the curtains wide. Sunlight flooded the room, causing Luan to growl from under her blankets."They are little monsters," Luan mumbled. "That’s harsh, Luan! They’re your brothers," Kristie countered, rolling her eyes. Luan peeked out, looking exhausted. "Did you see me yesterday? I almost tripped in the rain trying to get ice cream for my mom, and those kids didn't help. Ask Emma—I have permanent dark circles under my eyes even after a nap." She slumped back onto the mattress.Kristie shrugged, pouring herself a glass of water. "I love sunny days.""I hate them," Emma muttered, eyeing the bright window with a hiss. "It feels like I'm being drained.""What’s with the mood?" Kristie asked. "my brothers " luan pointed out raising her hand up with her head still on the bed . "The beach outfit," Emma sighed.Kristie groaned, picking up her towel. "Still? You’re obsessed, it’s stupid.""Call me wh

Silas hadn't been able to concentrate all day. He was still anxious, worried that Emma was still mad at him for the morning’s mishap. He’d been waiting in the parking lot just to catch a glimpse of her. When she finally emerged, he wanted to approach her, but he stopped himself. What should he say? "I'm sorry"? That would be stupid; the lady clearly hated being apologized to every five minutes. Silas sighed, running a hand through his hair. Emma was walking quickly, afraid her boss might appear and find another excuse to keep her late. She was moving fast, having swapped her painful heels for a pair of flat slippers. She caught sight of a figure moving back and forth near the exit, looking frantic. *I didn’t make a mistake naming him that—he really is a weird man,* she thought. A part of her felt bad for refusing her boss’s ride, but she wouldn’t admit defeat until she reached the main road and failed to find a taxi. As she was ab

  • The CEO I Insulted Is Now My Boss    13. A DIFFERENT FIRST IMPRESSION

"Wow, good morning to you, Miss Emma," Lucy greeted, her mouth hanging open as she stared. Emma rolled her eyes and adjusted her watch, making sure everything looked perfect. She was wearing the new black suit, paired with long, wide-legged trousers and a tucked-in white button-down shirt. For footwear, she had chosen the white heels with the thin, precarious-looking stems. Thankfully, Kristie had taught her how to walk in them that morning; she just prayed she wouldn’t have to run, or she’d end up losing a few teeth by noon. *See who can play this game,* Emma thought. *I’ll make sure that’s the last dollar he ever takes from my paycheck.* She snapped out of her thoughts as she noticed Lucy still staring. "I'm human," Emma remarked dryly. "Of course, but girl, you look mature. Gosh, and your hair!" Lucy gestured to Emma’s sleek, high bun, which pulled her features into a sharp, professional look. Emma’s face twitched. *Mature? Did I look like a child before?* She huffed

"Let me finish. I don't need empty declarations. You have a lot to learn, and if you make any mistakes, I’ll be deducting the damages from your salary until you’re left with a penny." Emma looked at the shopping bags and sighed in relief. Maybe the man wasn't completely heartless after all."I’m not actually going to pay for these clothes," Jerry added, his tone flat."What?!" Emma asked her voice a little high ,looking at him as he glared sharply at her. "I don't even have that kind of money!" Emma protested, rolling her eyes in exhaustion. She wondered what he was saying right now . Geez the man always seem to go back to point zero every single time she thought he would do something different. Who else were going to pay for the outfit then !. This man never ceased to amaze her—and not in a good way."I don't need to know that; I already know. All I want is for you to pay me back, and since you don't have the funds now, I’ll just deduct it from your next paycheck."
