Chapter 1

I locked my phone screen and watched as it went black. My fingers unconsciously tightened, crumpling the study abroad application form in front of me.

In the classroom, the students' chatter continued.

"Wow! Jemima Ford is fully aware of how attractive she is. I heard even matchmaking agencies have reached out to her!"

"Right? She just came back from studying abroad. She's also got a car and a house. She's pretty and rich."

"Look at Professor Dawson's expression. She's looking at Jemima like she's her future daughter-in-law!"

One compliment after another poured out from my classmates' mouths.

At the front of the room, Hannah Dawson kept nodding approvingly. She was beaming widely.

She concluded with satisfaction, "Very good. As expected of my prized student! You have a very clear plan for your future, Jemima. I'm sure the universe will align to make everything work in your favor. Soon, you and—"

"Wait!" I suddenly spoke up.

With my classmates watching on curiously, I stood up. My eyes locked onto Jemima's, and I plastered a fake smile filled with resentment onto my face.

I said, "Jemima, it looks like we have the same ideal type. Fortunately, I've already found a boyfriend, and his name is Elijah Sanders."

My voice grew colder as I continued, "Why don't I talk to Elijah about this later? If any of us happens to meet someone who fits your criteria, we can introduce him to you."

This provocation successfully angered someone, but it wasn't Jemima.

Like a protective mother hen, Hannah grabbed a box of chalk and hurled it at me.

There was a crash!

My ash brown hair was instantly dusted white.

Then came a furious tirade from Hannah. "Ivory, this is not the time and place to be showing off your relationship. Do you think you're worthy of Eli? If you know what's good for you, break up with him immediately!"

Countless eyes focused on me. I forced myself to suppress the sting in my eyes and not let my tears fall.

All this time, I had treated Hannah as my future mother-in-law with respect. Alas… I couldn't understand why she disliked me so much.

The class bell rang just in time to break the tension.

Realizing she had lost her composure, Hannah awkwardly shifted her gaze away from me. "That's all for today. Class dismissed.

"Oh, Jemi. There's a surprise waiting for you in my office. When you come over, you can show me how much scholarship money you've saved over the years, too."

"Jemi?" I repeated blankly. I froze as that nickname echoed in my mind.

In all the years I'd known Hannah, she had only ever addressed me as "Ms. Pearson" frostily. Every single word and action was a warning not to act recklessly in class just because I might become her daughter-in-law one day.

I yielded at every turn, but she just pushed further without regard.

Like clockwork, she'd interrupt every date I had with Elijah. Headaches, fevers, missing her son… She had used every excuse in the book.

I swallowed all my grievances in silence. It was because once we graduated, Elijah wanted to go abroad for an exchange program. He wanted me to go with him.

Hence, my less-than-pleasant interactions with Hannah would only last until graduation.

But today…

Taking a deep breath, I wiped away the tears at the corner of my eyes and looked at my phone, which had been vibrating nonstop earlier.

Half an hour ago, Elijah had sent me a message. He texted, "Ivy, your birthday's coming up. Let's go big at our usual place!"

I replied, "Okay. I'm on my way there."

After calming myself down, I packed the documents on my desk into my bag and went to meet him.

In the private room, I waited and waited, but Elijah still hadn't shown up when it was already quite late. I frowned slightly, my unease about to spill over.

The next second, the phone in my palm vibrated. There came a notification of an update on the campus forum.

Someone posted, "Shocking news! Two girls fought over one guy in an elective class today!"

Jemima's endless harassment was driving Elijah to the brink.I also learned from others that Jemima had humbled herself so much because, after she was exposed to be a liar, her reputation was completely ruined. She had become a joke to everyone. So, she could only cling to Elijah as her last resort to prove her own appeal.I thought Jemima would keep pestering him till the end of time. But one evening, I ran into a familiar figure.Hannah was outside the library. In front of her, Elijah stood gingerly with his face flushed red, unable to shake off Jemima's grip no matter what.Seeing this, Hannah stepped forward and slapped her. "You shameless woman! How dare you keep harassing Eli? It's because of you that he's ended up like this! How do you still have the nerve to keep bothering him?"Her sharp screams made her sound like a shrew, and her eyes were filled with nothing but hatred. It seemed like she hated Jemima for deceiving her.The next second, she rushed forward and knocked

Vicki tactfully left.My fingers were clenched so tightly that my knuckles turned pale as I tried to suppress the anger inside me. Then, I quietly looked at the scene before me.Not long ago, and not far away from here, I sat alone in a private room. I waited for my birthday wishes, hoping Elijah would come around. But reality dealt blow after blow to my heart. Hannah's mockery, Jemima's provocation, and Elijah's ambiguous attitude repeatedly pushed me into an emotional abyss. They kept driving me to break down and sink further. It was like being trapped in a swamp, where I was unable to escape the overwhelming negative emotions. At the moment I was falling apart, the person I thought would stay by my side stood next to someone else. Now, I had healed. I no longer needed to step back into this toxic relationship or continue to put up with that difficult future mother-in-law.Life was gradually getting better, and I was moving forward. I didn't want to return to that depressed st

When my parents heard that I had broken up with Elijah, they were very worried. After picking me up from the station, they kept comforting me the entire way home."It's okay, Ivy. You're still young. You'll definitely find someone better in the future.""That's right. A temporary setback in love is nothing. Take some time to rest. The right guy will eventually show up."Their warm and loving words healed me, and I smiled knowingly. The initial bitterness from the breakup had already passed. Now, I felt more calm than anything else. After detaching myself from the relationship, I realized just how much Elijah and Hannah had worn me down over the years. I had no confidence and only knew how to give. I let others take from me endlessly.Even after being treated like that by Hannah, all I could think of was enduring and tolerating. Thank goodness this draining relationship had finally come to an end. After returning home, I threw myself straight into studying and researching our com

After saying my piece, I walked straight out of the cafe.In the distance, the faint sound of an ambulance could be heard. The injured Hannah was then taken to the hospital.Amid the chaos, Elijah got into the ambulance with a dazed expression as well. At the same time, he frantically made calls to ask about the process of filling out the application. After the crowd at the cafe dispersed, the campus forum buzzed with gossip once again."Did you hear? Professor Dawson, who teaches the elective class, got hit by her star student just now! It was so bad she bled and got rushed to the hospital.""Oh, her? I heard she often slacks off in class and pushes a lot of her work onto her students!""Yeah, not to mention she got lucky because she had an obedient and capable helper… Say, wasn't that her son's girlfriend?""Didn't they break up? Didn't Jemima say she had her eyes on Professor Dawson's son recently?"All sorts of messy rumors flooded the comments section. As I glanced at it,

"Shut up! You're so damn annoying!" Jemima shrieked. She looked completely flustered. She didn't even bother responding to Hannah. Instead, she grabbed her blind date by the collar and yelled at him, "Who gave you the right to investigate me? Who gave you the right to expose my privacy? Do you even know you're ruining my chances of landing other rich guys? Get lost! People like you make me sick!"Following a loud bang, Jemima staggered backward. Her waist slammed hard into the restaurant table. Glasses clattered and shattered all over the floor.Everyone and everything seemed to freeze at that moment. In just a short while, everything had descended into complete chaos. My gaze remained fixed on Jemima, and my lips curled up into a faint, amused smile.Upon giving it some thought, I thought her change in attitude was pretty obvious. She went from deliberately provoking me and trying to seduce Elijah at the beginning to looking all worried now.She was worried about whether she c

The romantic atmosphere vanished instantly, leaving only the cloyingly sweet scent of perfume.Elijah scratched his head awkwardly and said, "Ivory, my mom asked me to do something today, so I—""What's that?" As I spoke, I stepped out from the corner. Gripping my phone tightly, I tried my best to steady my trembling hand as I walked up to Elijah.Silence descended upon the scene. Elijah glanced at Jemima and then at me. His face was flushed so red that he resembled a cooked lobster. After a long pause, I ignored his helpless gaze and smiled at Jemima. "Congratulations! You've successfully hooked a handsome guy who's six feet two inches tall. Looking at things now, it seems I've become the third party…""That's right! You're the unwanted eyesore. You should've broken up with Eli a long time ago!"A sharp reprimand suddenly rang out. Hannah strode forward and trained her fierce gaze on me. "Ivory, how long do you plan to keep clinging to Eli? I was the one who asked him to com

On Saturday afternoon, I sat in a corner of a cafe.Half an hour later, Jemima pushed the door open and stepped in. She was wearing heavy makeup. After saying that, I turned off my phone. When I turned it back on the next day, dozens of missed calls from Elijah popped up. The flood of messages that poured in indicated how anxious he was."Ivy, listen to me. I didn't know about your argument with Jemima."I only peeled those grapes because
