Chapter 2

作者: Bright Lights
I had barely made it out of the hospital when Mom recovered from the shock and came running after me.

"You ungrateful little..."

She grabbed my arm. Her grip was strong, and I could not break free.

Just then, an urgent voice rang out. "Lorraine, what are you doing to Cody?"

It was Dad.

Mom's grip loosened so suddenly that I nearly stumbled. Dad caught me and turned to glare at her. "Lorraine, why are you and Cody at the hospital? Did you bring him in for the match test?"

Mom shifted uncomfortably. "There are people everywhere. Do you have to be so loud?"

She had not denied it. That told Dad everything he needed to know.

"So you actually brought him in for the match test."

"Didn't I tell you? If you want to use money to solve the problem now that your brother is in trouble, fine. If you want to get tested yourself, I won't stop you. But I told you Cody was off limits."

Mom realized there was no point hiding it and lowered her voice. "Cody's a match. This could be my brother's only chance. I just figured he's young. A small surgery wouldn't even—"

Dad was barely holding it together. "You heartless... You don't deserve to call yourself a mother. He's a match, but so what? You're actually going to let him donate? Not a chance in hell. Cody is my son, not a spare organ supply for your family. As long as I'm breathing, he's never giving your brother a kidney."

Mom knew she was in the wrong and could only stand there while Dad laid into her, but when he said 'never', she could not stop herself from muttering back. "He's still my brother. And my mother's getting old. You want her to outlive her own child? My brother was on his knees begging, Wade. How can you just stand there and feel nothing?"

Dad let out a cold laugh. "Feel nothing? He had the nerve to come after my son's kidney, and I'm the one who should feel sorry for him?

"Don't talk to me about how desperate your brother is. He's desperate because he wants your son's organ. If there weren't laws stopping him, you think he'd bother begging? He would've shown up with a knife and taken it himself."

"You always think the worst of people," Mom muttered.

Dad scoffed. "Am I wrong? All these years, how much have you given your mother? How much has your brother taken from her? Has either of them ever shown you an ounce of gratitude?

"They've never once appreciated a thing you've done. When Cody goes over there, they feed him leftovers. You really think handing over his kidney is suddenly going to change that?

"If your mother and your brother had even a shred of respect for you, they would never have asked for this. They've never respected you, Lorraine, and you just keep going back for more."

She snapped. "If you don't want to help, then don't. Why do you have to go on and on about it?"

He looked at how angry she was, and something in him deflated.

"Lorraine, I want this to be the last time you bring this up. If you ever mention Cody donating a kidney again, I'm filing for divorce. I mean it. A devoted daughter like you should just go live with your mother and your brother, because you sure as hell don't deserve this family."

He did not wait for her response. He took my arm and walked away.

We had already gone a fair distance before Dad finally calmed down. He let out a long breath.

"Cody, there's something I need to tell you. Your mom... if she's willing to let this kidney thing go, we can still make this work. But if she keeps putting her side of the family above us, if she tries to force you into this again, then I can't keep this marriage going. I'll file the papers.

"I know you're in your senior year and the timing couldn't be worse. But I need you to be ready for that."

I wrapped my arms around him. "Dad, I get it. I know what's been going on. Whatever you decide, I'm behind you."

After that blowup, Mom backed off for a while, but I had read the comments. I knew she would not give up that easily.

Hence, I stayed on guard. I only came out of my room when Dad was home, and I only ate what he cooked. Whenever I went out, I made sure at least one classmate was with me.

One afternoon, a classmate and I went to the bookstore to pick up study materials. After we finished, we wandered around the street for a while.

Then, he tapped my arm. "Hey, isn't that your mom?"

In the weeks that followed, the public backlash made it nearly impossible for Grandma to leave the house.Meanwhile, Mom had lost all motivation. She stopped showing up every day to cook and buy groceries the way she used to.Grandma spent a few days stewing in panic before the police came to her door and took her back into custody. In a way, it solved her problem of having nowhere to go.This time, Mom did not pour every resource she had into hiring lawyers and mounting a defense. It was not entirely because her heart was no longer in it. She had been fired from her job and was barely keeping herself afloat. Cutting expenses was not a choice but a necessity.Eventually, Mom told Grandma to apply for a public defender on her own. She was done paying for lawyers.Grandma blew up at her over it, calling her an ungrateful waste, same as always. Yet Mom was past the point of caring. Nothing Grandma said landed anymore. With no other options, Grandma accepted the public defender and

The people who had believed me all along were vindicated in an instant. Those who had insisted that 'parents can do no wrong' and that children should comply with whatever their elders demanded were stunned into silence by what Grandma had actually done.[This is supposed to be family? She was ready to kidnap the kid and cut out his kidney!][Even an enemy wouldn't go that far!][The nerve of this woman, playing the helpless elder on camera after everything she's done.]Everyone who had sided with Grandma did an about-face and turned their anger on her instead. Some people held rotten values, and they always would. However, the world, on the whole, still had more decent people than not. There were a few who had taken filial duty to such an extreme that they genuinely believed elders held the power of life and death over their children, and that no matter what an elder did, the younger generation had no right to complain. Yet even those people did not want to become targets the

"Grandma, it's Cody. There are some things I want to talk to you about."For as long as I can remember, I did what Mom asked. I deferred to you and Uncle Oliver's family whenever I could. In all those years, refusing to donate was the only time I didn't go along with what you wanted."Uncle Oliver's death was not my fault. And he was your son, but Mom is your daughter, and I'm her only child. I'm your grandchild. What do you gain from destroying me?"On the other end of the line, Grandma let out a dry, hollow laugh. "What do I gain? It makes me happy."My son is dead. Why should you still be alive? Not just alive, but thriving. Getting into a top university, heading for a good career, walking around with a perfectly healthy body without a care in the world…"I want to ruin your life. I want you to go down with my son. Your reputation is already trashed. Even if the university lets you stay, good luck finding a decent job after graduation with your name dragged through the mud."I

The moment Grandma made bail, she hit the ground running, plotting her next move against me. She had spent a lifetime getting things done her way. Mom had never once pushed back, and that had made Grandma more stubborn with every passing year.In her mind, Uncle Oliver died because I had refused to donate. By her math, that made me the person who killed her son.If I was the person who killed her son, I deserved the worst she could come up with.Mom did not want to go along with it, but Grandma threatened to end her own life if Mom refused. Hence, Mom caved and sided with Grandma once again. The comments passed all of this along to me in real time. With that kind of warning system, I was not worried. If they came at me again, I would do exactly what I had done in the alley. I would let them walk into the trap, then watch them earn themselves another stint behind bars. While Grandma was consumed with vengeance and Mom was being torn apart between playing the devoted daughter and b

Grandma and Mom were both taken in for questioning. The investigation uncovered Grandma's connection to the unlicensed clinic.Grandma wanted Mom out as soon as possible so that she could keep working on Uncle Oliver's behalf and, ideally, make another attempt at getting my kidney. In a rare display of maternal sacrifice, Grandma took full responsibility for the plot. As a result, Mom was only held for 15 days before she was released.Once she was out, Mom threw herself into helping Uncle Oliver. She borrowed money for treatment, pulled strings to find doctors, and did everything she could. However, his condition kept deteriorating, and nothing she did could stop it.Uncle Oliver spent his final days in a hospital bed. From what the comments told me, he was consumed with regret. He should not have been so stingy! He should have accepted the compatible kidney the hospital had found instead of holding out for mine! Now, both options were gone, and a transplant was no longer possibl

The police arrived and had Mom and Grandma restrained within seconds. They had both frozen the instant the squad car came into view. So much for Grandma's bold claim that nobody was going to arrest her. Apparently, she understood the law better than she let on.Did they really think I would fall for their plan when the comments had shown me every detail of it?Dad and I had gone through all the trouble of moving out. There was no way I would have wandered around carelessly enough for them to track me down by accident. I had gone for that walk, made myself easy to follow, and led them into this alley on purpose. The moment I turned into the alley, I quietly dialed a friend. We had worked it out beforehand. When I called, she was to pick up immediately and say nothing. The second I said, "What are you doing?" in a frightened voice, she would call the police. I had already given her the address, and on top of that, my phone's location could be traced. The officers were there within
