Chapter 7

作者: Bright Lights
Dad looked at the phone. "A recording?"

I nodded. It was a complete recording of everything that had happened from the moment I walked through the door.

Even if Grandma did try to weaponize the internet against me, this recording would show everyone that she had staged the entire thing to manipulate public opinion. Once people realized they were being used as a weapon, they would not play along.

If anything, the backlash would land squarely on her.

Mom had left with Grandma that night, but the next morning, she was back, banging on the door. "Wade! Wade, open the door!"

Dad opened it. "Are you here to file the divorce papers?"

Mom blinked. "What divorce papers? You're still going on about something you said in the heat of the moment?"

His voice was flat. "I wasn't blowing off steam. I'm serious about the divorce."

She frowned. "Everything's perfectly fine. What are you going on about? I'm the one letting things go here, and you're still picking a fight with me?"

She started pushing her way inside, but Dad blocked her.

"Perfectly fine? Your family tried to carve out my son's kidney. That's what you call 'perfectly fine'? Your version of 'perfectly fine' is a happy family built on my son's sacrifice? Get out. Say whatever you want, but this marriage is over."

The door slammed shut. Mom muttered a few things on the other side, but eventually, she left.

Once the door was closed, Dad took a couple of deep breaths to steady himself. "This works out. While she's off throwing a tantrum, I'll have time to find a good lawyer."

Time moved quickly after that. My academic competition was coming up. A strong finish in this competition, combined with my grades, would be enough to secure me an early scholarship to a top university.

According to what the comments had revealed about the 'original storyline', I had won this competition and earned the scholarship in my previous life. My cousin, Troy Pritchard, who was in the same grade as me, was eaten up with jealousy over it and spent plenty of time talking behind my back.

It was also because of this scholarship that after I graduated and could not find a good job, Troy mocked me. He said all those years of studying had been a waste, that I had taken up a spot at a top university for nothing as I could not make a decent living.

They all knew perfectly well that the only reason I was in poor health was that I had donated a kidney to Uncle Oliver.

As for Mom, rather than saying a single word in my defense, she complained that I was an embarrassment and that I made her look bad in front of Grandma.

The thought made me clench my jaw. I was going to win this scholarship. I was going to build a future worth having, and every single one of them could choke on it.

The competition went well. My ranking was strong, and barring anything unexpected, the scholarship was mine.

Afterward, I passed Troy coming out of a teacher's office. His eyes were still red.

The moment he saw me, they burned even redder. "Cody, you wouldn't give my dad a kidney, and now, he's stuck in a hospital bed because of you. And you took my scholarship spot on top of it. You must be really pleased with yourself."

I smiled modestly. "I earned that spot on my own, so yes, I am."

Troy had nothing to say to that. He stormed off.

I had not missed the raw jealousy in his eyes.

In the original storyline, I had just donated a kidney to Uncle Oliver when the scholarship results came out. Troy was jealous, but making a move against me right after I had donated an organ to his father would have looked terrible.

This time, though, I had not donated, and Troy believed I had 'stolen' his scholarship spot. There was nothing holding him back. What would he do next?

I did not have to wonder for long.

The very next day, Grandma showed up at my school to cause a scene.

Right in the middle of the sports field, she appeared with a banner during lunch break. I had no idea how she had gotten past the front gate.

The banner read, 'Cody Hewitt refused to save his dying uncle and disrespected his own grandmother. Does a student like that deserve a scholarship?'

Half the school had stopped to stare, crowding around the banner and whispering to each other.

Grandma was elated. She pulled out a megaphone like a magician producing a rabbit and launched into a wailing monologue.

"My grandson has no heart! He's going to sit back and watch his own uncle die! I got down on my knees and begged him, and it still wasn't enough!

"And just because I borrowed a little money from his family, he turned his parents against each other and tried to take all of it for himself! How can someone be so cruel?"

The teacher on duty looked like his head was about to split open. "Ma'am, please calm down. This is a family matter and has nothing to do with academics. Could you please handle this at home?"

Grandma's eyes darted around. "Nothing to do with academics? How can a heartless person like him be given a scholarship to a top university? And forget about that for a second. Doesn't the school bear some responsibility here?

"That good-for-nothing grandson of mine is making his father file for divorce so he can snatch my daughter's money. He probably wants to spend it all on some girl at this school. How is that not the school's business?"

Then, Grandma's eyes lit up, as if she had just thought of something. "He doesn't come home until after 10:00 pm every night. He's definitely fooling around with one of the girls here. And you're giving a student like him a scholarship? What kind of school is this?"

In the weeks that followed, the public backlash made it nearly impossible for Grandma to leave the house.Meanwhile, Mom had lost all motivation. She stopped showing up every day to cook and buy groceries the way she used to.Grandma spent a few days stewing in panic before the police came to her door and took her back into custody. In a way, it solved her problem of having nowhere to go.This time, Mom did not pour every resource she had into hiring lawyers and mounting a defense. It was not entirely because her heart was no longer in it. She had been fired from her job and was barely keeping herself afloat. Cutting expenses was not a choice but a necessity.Eventually, Mom told Grandma to apply for a public defender on her own. She was done paying for lawyers.Grandma blew up at her over it, calling her an ungrateful waste, same as always. Yet Mom was past the point of caring. Nothing Grandma said landed anymore. With no other options, Grandma accepted the public defender and

The people who had believed me all along were vindicated in an instant. Those who had insisted that 'parents can do no wrong' and that children should comply with whatever their elders demanded were stunned into silence by what Grandma had actually done.[This is supposed to be family? She was ready to kidnap the kid and cut out his kidney!][Even an enemy wouldn't go that far!][The nerve of this woman, playing the helpless elder on camera after everything she's done.]Everyone who had sided with Grandma did an about-face and turned their anger on her instead. Some people held rotten values, and they always would. However, the world, on the whole, still had more decent people than not. There were a few who had taken filial duty to such an extreme that they genuinely believed elders held the power of life and death over their children, and that no matter what an elder did, the younger generation had no right to complain. Yet even those people did not want to become targets the

"Grandma, it's Cody. There are some things I want to talk to you about."For as long as I can remember, I did what Mom asked. I deferred to you and Uncle Oliver's family whenever I could. In all those years, refusing to donate was the only time I didn't go along with what you wanted."Uncle Oliver's death was not my fault. And he was your son, but Mom is your daughter, and I'm her only child. I'm your grandchild. What do you gain from destroying me?"On the other end of the line, Grandma let out a dry, hollow laugh. "What do I gain? It makes me happy."My son is dead. Why should you still be alive? Not just alive, but thriving. Getting into a top university, heading for a good career, walking around with a perfectly healthy body without a care in the world…"I want to ruin your life. I want you to go down with my son. Your reputation is already trashed. Even if the university lets you stay, good luck finding a decent job after graduation with your name dragged through the mud."I

The moment Grandma made bail, she hit the ground running, plotting her next move against me. She had spent a lifetime getting things done her way. Mom had never once pushed back, and that had made Grandma more stubborn with every passing year.In her mind, Uncle Oliver died because I had refused to donate. By her math, that made me the person who killed her son.If I was the person who killed her son, I deserved the worst she could come up with.Mom did not want to go along with it, but Grandma threatened to end her own life if Mom refused. Hence, Mom caved and sided with Grandma once again. The comments passed all of this along to me in real time. With that kind of warning system, I was not worried. If they came at me again, I would do exactly what I had done in the alley. I would let them walk into the trap, then watch them earn themselves another stint behind bars. While Grandma was consumed with vengeance and Mom was being torn apart between playing the devoted daughter and b

Grandma and Mom were both taken in for questioning. The investigation uncovered Grandma's connection to the unlicensed clinic.Grandma wanted Mom out as soon as possible so that she could keep working on Uncle Oliver's behalf and, ideally, make another attempt at getting my kidney. In a rare display of maternal sacrifice, Grandma took full responsibility for the plot. As a result, Mom was only held for 15 days before she was released.Once she was out, Mom threw herself into helping Uncle Oliver. She borrowed money for treatment, pulled strings to find doctors, and did everything she could. However, his condition kept deteriorating, and nothing she did could stop it.Uncle Oliver spent his final days in a hospital bed. From what the comments told me, he was consumed with regret. He should not have been so stingy! He should have accepted the compatible kidney the hospital had found instead of holding out for mine! Now, both options were gone, and a transplant was no longer possibl

The police arrived and had Mom and Grandma restrained within seconds. They had both frozen the instant the squad car came into view. So much for Grandma's bold claim that nobody was going to arrest her. Apparently, she understood the law better than she let on.Did they really think I would fall for their plan when the comments had shown me every detail of it?Dad and I had gone through all the trouble of moving out. There was no way I would have wandered around carelessly enough for them to track me down by accident. I had gone for that walk, made myself easy to follow, and led them into this alley on purpose. The moment I turned into the alley, I quietly dialed a friend. We had worked it out beforehand. When I called, she was to pick up immediately and say nothing. The second I said, "What are you doing?" in a frightened voice, she would call the police. I had already given her the address, and on top of that, my phone's location could be traced. The officers were there within
