Chapter 5

Author: Local Universe
Arthur was dragged back to my yard and left on the ground, his fate unknown.

I knelt beside him, knowing it was futile but still trying repeatedly to bring him into my arms. "Arthur, I'm sorry. It's my fault. I shouldn't have asked you to buy almond cookies. It's my fault. I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

Tears fell on Arthur's wounded face, quickly turning into nothingness. It left me powerless and desperate.

Just when I thought everything was over, the door was knocked on. Anna stood outside, looking at the silent quarters, her eyes dim and unclear. "Nathan! Get out! I know you're pretending!"

No one responded.

Anna frowned and looked past the courtyard walls. Just in time, she saw Arthur's motionless figure, her pupils contracting suddenly.

However, she soon remembered something and calmed down. "Still pretending? What? Your father's pity act didn't work, so now it's your turn? Do you really believe that pretending to be pitiful will make me feel sorry for you? Ridiculous!"

Anna stared at Arthur's back, her icy tone breaking my heart.

I wanted to ask her why she was so confident and what gave her the right to maliciously speculate about Arthur when he was so well-behaved and sensible.

She was still spouting threats when she realized that Arthur was not reacting. She finally understood something was wrong. She pushed open the door and walked into the courtyard.

"Why aren't you saying anything? Feeling guilty? Get up now. I've seen through you, so stop pretending." Her words grew increasingly urgent, and her pace quickened with each step.

Just as she reached Arthur, his hand twitched.

Anna froze. The panic on her face instantly transformed into anger at having been tricked again. She kicked Arthur hard and shouted toward the side room, "Nathan, is this fun? You're happy to have me played, aren't you? Fine, since you like having the child pretend, then I'll play along. Let's see who's the one who'll be heartbroken in the end!"

With that, she turned and left.

At the door, Anna paused, turned back to look at the silent side room, and her anger could no longer be contained. She left with a cold laugh.

After she left, Arthur suddenly vomited a mouthful of blood. He opened his eyes in a final burst of lucidity. Then, he carefully touched his chest and pulled out a clean almond cookie from his pocket. He had hidden it with his life.

Touching the almond cookie in his hand, Arthur could not help but grin. A heartbreaking smile appeared on his face. "At least I still have one."

Then, he struggled to his feet and stumbled into the room. "Father, I'm back..."

Looking at my lifeless face, Arthur froze for a moment before quickly going to the bedside and putting the almond cookie in my mouth. "Father, I brought back your almond cookie. Father, try and see if it's good. Father, you lied to me..."

With that said, Arthur fainted on the floor.

The next day, a servant came to serve food. A scream echoed throughout the princess' residence.

"Help! Mr. Smith is dead!"

Anna, who was coaxing Zachary to take his medicine, jumped up, her face deathly pale. "What did you say?"

"But what did you do when he was wrongly imprisoned? You were afraid of being implicated, so you deceived me, saying that he would be cleared of all charges and vindicated as long as I served you well. On the other hand, you sent assassins to slaughter the entire Doolithe family!"Zachary added, "If it weren't for my father revealing everything to me before he died, I might still be kept in the dark! I came back for revenge. As long as I could avenge my family, I wouldn't care if I had to suppress my disgust as I slept with you or even if I risked my life. All I want is revenge! Fortunately, I didn't fail. Your daily tea was laced with musk powder, so you won't be able to have children anymore!"Her expression changed constantly as she heard his confession. At first, she was shocked, then angry, and she finally became furious with shame. "You wretch."She lost her composure and rushed at him, who suddenly pulled out a sharpened hairpin from his sleeve and plunged it into her chest.

"Anna, I... I know my mistake... I just lost my head... because I love you so much... Please... forgive me... I won't do it again," Zachary pleaded desperately as he lay on the ground, gasping for breath.Anna sneered and tugged at Zachary's hair, dragging him to Arthur's bed. "You dare beg for forgiveness after hurting my son? Who do you think you are?"Before being imprisoned, the king had John examine Zachary. The final result was that Zachary was in good health and showed no signs of having been poisoned. This caused a ripple effect. The king was furious and had all the healers who had treated Zachary arrested and brought to the palace. He threatened them with the lives of their families to force them to reveal the truth.Eventually, the last healer who was taken away by Zachary informed them, "Your Majesty, I report the royal physician Doctor Greg Lumian for accepting bribes, faking Zachary's illness... and colluding with others to kill Mr. Smith!"After saying this, he kne

"Doctor! Doctor!"John's expression remained normal, which reminded me that I was just a soul.Suddenly, a familiar voice came from outside. "Her Highness is concerned about His Highness' health and ordered me to come and visit."My heart thumped violently. I floated in front of the intensive care room door and tried to use my body to block it.'Why is he here? Is he going to hurt my child again? No, no! Arthur mustn't be allowed to be harmed any more. Absolutely not!' I pondered.Zachary took out a heavy bag from his sleeve and handed it to the maid guarding the door. The maid then pretended to be unwell and hurriedly left, allowing Zachary to push the door open and enter.I stood in front of him, repeatedly trying to push him away, but he passed through my illusory body each time.Zachary stood in front of Arthur, maliciously sniggering as his delicate nails traced over Arthur's forehead, nose bridge, and mouth. Finally, his hands slowly clamped onto his vulnerable neck.He t

I angrily slapped her restless hand away and skillfully threaded the ribbon through the copper coin with my two hands. "Believe it or not, I believe in karma."Just like how we fell in love at first sight and naturally came together amid everyone's blessings back then. After hearing my remark, Anna suddenly took the copper coin from my hand and said to me, "Nathan, if gods do exist, I wish to love you forever and grow old together with you."After saying that, the copper coin carrying her wish was thrown high up by her and securely hung at the very top of the Lovers' Tree. Our eyes were solely focused on each other, and I thought about spending my entire life with her.Back in the present day, when she reached the 700th step, a group of children was gathered around a stone monument, discussing something. When she appeared, one of the children pointed at a crooked line of words on the stone monument and asked her, "Lady, what does this say?"Anna's eyes suddenly turned red, and th

Anna's gloomy gaze swept over everyone. "What about you all? Is there really no one who can come up with a solution?"One elderly royal physician trembled as he knelt. "The prince is in critical condition. He's on the brink of death. Unless the miracle healer intervenes, otherwise..."I was frantic, pounding on Anna with all my strength. If it were not for her indifference, Arthur would not have turned out like this!Just then, an elderly man with white hair walked in with a medical kit. Everyone voluntarily made way at the sight of him. When the king saw the miracle healer emblem on the elderly man's body, his eyes lit up.The miracle healer, John Snow, could not help but gasp in horror when he saw Arthur's tragic state, but he said nothing and put down his medicine kit to start taking Arthur's pulse. The yellow bed curtain fell as I stood beside Arthur, unable to stop my tears from flowing.Arthur, who was even afraid of the smallest cut, was now covered in a dense array of si

The medicine bowl slipped from her hand and crashed to the ground, making a sharp sound.Anna pushed Zachary out of her arms and rushed out of the door like a gust of wind.Everything in my quarters was exactly as it was when she entered, only this time, she finally noticed the large patches of blood on the ground. Anna's pupils constricted abruptly, and her steps inside became even more frantic. Finally, when she saw my pale face and closed eyes, Anna felt a sharp pain in her heart. She muttered to herself, "How could this happen... I just took a few drops of blood. It's not like I cut out your heart and dismembered you. How could this happen..."With a glimmer of hope, she trembled and reached out to test my breath, but then she stepped back in disbelief. She recalled our last conversation. "Anna, please... don't. I'll die if you take more blood! Zachary isn't sick at all. He's faking it! Please believe me!"What had she done at that time?Anna disregarded my desperate struggl
