Chapter 3

Author: Y.I. Jin
By the time I'd finished clearing out my room, Layla's things were piled high outside.

I called a removal service. They were halfway through hauling everything away when Layla returned with my parents, her eyes swollen from crying.

"Evelyn, are you throwing me out?"

My mother looked displeased, her voice sharp.

"You've barely been home, and you're already throwing a fit? I'm the one who gave your room to Layla for her morning practice. If you have a problem, come to me. Why are you taking it out on her?"

Their favoritism couldn't have been more obvious. I'd only been away for a few years, yet Layla had already taken my place in their hearts.

My father gave Layla a comforting pat before turning to me with disappointment.

"Enough. You just came home and you've already turned the house upside down. Evelyn, is this what you've learned all these years? As long as your mother and I are alive, this is not your house to run."

He lifted his chin slightly and signaled the housekeeper.

"Keep a close eye on everything for tonight's party. Nothing can go wrong. I want every guest to see just how remarkable Layla is!"

At those words, Layla could no longer hide her smile.

Then they left to oversee the party preparations.

Watching them go, my chest tightened.

That evening, my parents invited nearly every major figure in the industry to boost Layla's standing. They personally introduced her to guest after guest.

Meanwhile, I stood forgotten at the edge of the room. Eventually, I found a quiet corner and sat down to drink alone.

Halfway through the party, Layla walked over with a glass of wine.

"Evelyn, we're family now. I hope we can get along."

Without waiting for me to answer, she drained her glass.

A second later, right in front of everyone, she clutched her throat and staggered back, her face twisting in pain.

"My... my voice..."

The room erupted in shock.

Layla's voice had suddenly become rough and hoarse, as though her vocal cords had been scraped raw.

My parents saw something was wrong and rushed over. The moment they heard Layla's voice, they panicked.

"What... what did you put in my drink?"

Layla turned to me with tears in her eyes and pointed an accusing finger.

Every eye in the room swung toward me. Then someone in the crowd gasped.

"Isn't she... that musical prodigy who's been making headlines overseas?"

The room immediately stirred, and everyone began looking me over.

Layla, my parents, and Ron all froze, staring at me in confusion.

I hadn't expected anyone there to recognize me. I took a breath and prepared to tell them the truth.

"Actually..."

"Evelyn!"

Before I could finish, Layla cut me off with a wail.

Clutching her throat, she burst into tears.

"I know you're jealous because I get to have my own concert, but you shouldn't have done something like this to me.

"Everyone in this family knows you were born without a musical bone in your body. How could you possibly be some musical prodigy?"

For a singer, a ruined voice could mean the end of her career.

The guests shook their heads. No matter what I said, no one believed me.

Worse, I happened to be standing in a camera blind spot, so there was no footage to prove my innocence.

My parents shoved me aside and rushed Layla to the hospital.

I lost my footing and slammed my lower back into the corner of a table. A sharp pain shot through me.

But the physical pain was nothing compared to the pain in my heart. If no one believed me, there was no reason for me to stay.

The nurse curled her lip and held out her phone."It's all over the internet that you put your own mother in the hospital.""So what if you're a musical prodigy who's famous abroad? That doesn't give you the right to treat a younger musician like that. Were you really that afraid she'd steal your spotlight?"My eyes narrowed as I took her phone. My face darkened the moment I saw what was on the screen. In the video, Layla cried to the camera as she told one lie after another about what I'd done to her.She blamed me for my mother's hospitalization, her ruined concert, and what had happened at the party. The video had gone viral online. The comments were full of people attacking me.Not one of them had anything good to say.“How petty. Who cares if she's a musical prodigy? Someone that rotten doesn't deserve any of those awards.”“What kind of music can someone that spiteful make? Those awards were probably rigged anyway.”“Who knows how she actually won those awards? You know what I me

Layla had shown off in front of me over and over again. I'd ignored her every time, but now she actually dared to put her hands on me.Who did she think she was? Did she really think being my parents' adopted daughter gave her the right to walk all over me? She was asking for trouble.Layla rolled across the floor three times before she finally stopped. She struggled to her feet, clutching her lower stomach and sobbing."Dad! Help me! She's going to beat me to death!"My father hesitated, not knowing whose side to take."Well, if you hadn't said those things about Evelyn, she wouldn't have hit you."When Layla realized they weren't going to take her side, her expression darkened. She glared at me like she wanted to tear me apart. She was about to say more when the operating room doors opened.A nurse wheeled my mother out. We immediately gathered around her, and no one paid Layla any more attention."The surgery went well. Now we have to see if she wakes up. Talk to her often. If she w

I put my violin away and turned to leave. My bags were already packed at home. I just had to pick them up and go.At the front door, I ran into my family. Their expressions changed when they saw my bags. They stared at me, their daughter who had grown as tall as them. They seemed to realize for the first time how little attention they'd paid to me over the years.I'd gone abroad alone to study, and somehow, I'd grown up without them noticing.Yet they were my parents, and they'd never once asked how I was doing out there. They hadn't even known what I had achieved abroad. My mother forced a smile, her voice hoarse."Evelyn, are you leaving so soon? Stay a few more days. We haven't seen each other in years. We should sit down and talk as a family."They no longer treated me with the same disdain as before. Now that they knew what I'd achieved, their attitude toward me had completely changed.A humorless laugh escaped me. I met their eager eyes, then stepped aside and showed them the emp

The old man was so excited that he stepped over the seats to get to me, then gave me a careful look."Byron is a lucky man to have a student as talented as you. He invited me to your recital last year. You were incredible."I hadn't expected him to know my teacher. I nodded and thanked him.More and more people in the hall stood up. After hearing what he said, they quickly searched my name online. The elderly man was Michael Grant, once a celebrated musical genius. His concerts had always sold out, and every student he'd personally taught had gone on to become famous. My parents were among them."Good Lord, I can't believe I'm seeing her in person! Tickets to her concerts abroad are nearly impossible to get.""Hearing her play live is heavenly. After that violin performance, the singing just now was painful to listen to.""Exactly. She has a nice voice, but her breath control isn't steady. She still needs more practice."As the comments continued, Layla's expression grew darker. She wa

While they were at the hospital, I went home and started packing my things.Halfway through, Ron came back.I looked at him and tried to speak, but nothing came out. When we were kids, he was always sneaking me out behind our parents' backs. Even when we got caught and he was punished, he never ratted me out. When had the brother I remembered become a stranger?"Layla's concert is tomorrow, and she still doesn't have a violinist."I remember you studied violin for a couple of years, so I put your name down."His brow was furrowed, but his tone was a little softer."Layla is the one people are coming to see anyway. No matter how badly you play, nobody will notice. You ruined her voice. You should do something to make it up to her."Then he noticed the luggage and paused."What are you packing for? Is it time to go back to school?"I closed my eyes and spoke quietly, "I'm leaving.""Never mind. It's probably better if you go back soon. At least you won't spend every day fighting with Lay
