Chapter One
Atlanta, Georgia, December 27, 2000 Stanley Edwards walked through Sunset Street. He peered into the sky looking for stars. The moon slipped behind a dark angry cloud. Tree branches embarrassingly naked with frozen icicles on the tips. The air turned brisk. Moist evaporated from his chapped lips. He emitted a heavy breath. Stanley enjoyed the crisp December air crawling into his lungs.Stanley’s body vigorous, he stood six foot tall with an ache in his vertebra. Intensity to scream out, but rubbed the poorer part of his back Stanley hauled his one hundred and seventy pounds down the pavement.  At twenty-seven-years-old with short blonde hair spiked up in the top, Stanley’s blue eyes appeared beady. He self-consciously rubbed the long-present scar on the cheek’s left side with his right fist. Then he scratched the mysterious itch in the dimpled of his chin.  Stanley’s walk resembled a rigid, military stride. People claimed he mirrored a Russian man and had th

Justice Complex Gary Bates sat in the police officers’ terminal at Justice Complex. He skimmed the room as officer Max Donovan leaned against the file cabinet, referring to the notes of a case gone cold.Glancing across the room, Bates watched Dale Daniels, Walter Newton, and Jennifer Woods with coffees and donuts at their desks. Their stations littered with registers. Bates glared at the three, speculating if they each had something to hide. The detective didn’t trust many people always suspicious of everybody he came into contact with. He even suspected his officers and staff. With a sigh, Bates shifted his hulking frame from the rotating chair, headed to his office. Detective Gary Bates, sprawled in large caps on the door. Upon entering his office, the detective went to the ringing phone, snatched up the receiver, pressed it to his ear.“Hello.”“This is the secretary, just a courtesy call. Detective, I thought you’d like to know if there are any changes to the

Chapter Three
Night Shift  Edwards picked up his pace as he drew closer to the units. Hanes’s head drooped toward his chest. He locked his eyes. His breath trapped in his throat. Edwards didn’t care. He just needed to pass the units to the surveillance station. Hanes grumbled. The cop almost passed the cell when the convict lifted his head. His eyes snapped open glaring at Edwards from between the metal bars. They appeared bloodshot engrossed with yellow. Hanes spent many years as a heavy drinker just as Lucas Woods. His dark skin showed protruding blue veins bulging from his arms and neck.  Stanley paused halfway passing the cell. He narrowed his eyes watching Hanes. His body became rigid. The cop clasped his palms together in face of the devil behind those bars. Hanes stood, shuffling closer. He folded his vast, deformed hands around the metal centers exposing white knuckles. Hanes stared hard, with a low growl in the pit of his throat sounding like a raging animal. Then he

Let’s Talk About Daisy “Yeah, you can leave when I’m finished.”Hanes sat back on the bed, leaning against the white, lumpy cement wall. He drew his knees up toward his chest while resting his chin on the bones. With a distant glance at the cell’s rear Hanes started the story about Daisy. Edwards gave Hanes permission to tell how he met Daisy at a club one night, but never named the place.Daisy was at the bar, two spots down from Hanes, glancing around the crowded dance floor. Hanes said the club jammed with people wandering off beat to the music. “They looked like sweaty couples having sex everywhere.” Hanes laughed. He talked about watching Daisy the entire time staring at her huge breasts two large melons bursting out of the cream, low-cut blouse. She had ordered a Sex on the Beach. He looked long and hard at her full lips wrapped around the straw, sucking the drink. Hanes felt aroused from the red lip gloss. Finally, Daisy looked up saw Hanes watching he

A New Beginning January tenth, 2001, winter settled in recent weeks ahead. The moon beamed down upon the stranger walking through the paths. He headed toward Ferry Street then turned left onto Hazelnut Park. Spotting a blazing campfire in the distance, the man headed toward the park’s entrance. He kneeled behind a tree watching two men and a woman. They wore heavy army coats and boots with combat gear. He overheard them talking seated in folded chairs. A red and white cooler rested a few feet away from the bonfire. They sipped from flasks, opened packages of granola and protein bars.He lowered himself hurdling against the tree trunk watching them. Checking his timepiece again it shifted 10:20 PM. Static came through the headphone attached to his ears. He paused. The voice over the headphone speakers sounded firm making demands. The man placed his lips to the mouthpiece.“Do you see them?” the voice asked. “Yes, I see them they’re here all right.”“Excellen

Shoving Debbie on the ground, she folded over onto her back trying to seize her attacker. He reached into his rear pocket, pulled out a cold steel throwing knife. Debbie screamed again thrashing her arms and legs. The man kneeled placing her between both of his legs. Chapter Seven
Stanley’s alarm clock went off at 9:00 PM that morning. He struck the button at the top of the clock turning off the buzz. When that didn’t work, he slammed his fist down, knocking the clock on the floor. Stanley stood, stretching. He walked over to the window. Morning sun ricocheted off of his smooth, bare chest. He glared at the fresh snow. Thick clouds carried a gray, white mass overlapping in the sky. Stanley shook his head trying to clear his fuzzy brain. He wobbled out into the hallway toward the bathroom. A quick glimpse in the mirror before racking his fingers through his blonde hair, he thought about dying it.  More of the Russian features penetrated his face with strong cheekbones. He stared into his blues.  Then his gaze slipped to the scar on the left cheek. It reminded him of November 1999; he had gotten the scar in a violent encounter. They assaulted him at his mother home during Thanksgiving dinner with family.  The evening started off nicely,
