The pack house is a mess, but it would have to wait for now. I am already running late for patrol and I can’t afford another mark against my name. Not if I want to keep my title of gamma. I grab my satchel and check I’ve at least got a protein bar to have for a snack when the door slams shut behind me. “Rylie.” My whole body can’t decide whether to freeze or melt at the sound of my name on his lips. “Hunter,” I reply, rolling my eyes as I turn around to face my alpha. I let my gaze roam up his broad chest until our eyes lock, and every ounce of reasoning leaves my mind as I lose myself in the icy-blue eyes of the alpha. A smirk haunts his lips, a hint of a shadow covering his hard jaw. In two strides he stands before me. I barely reach his shoulder, but I refuse to let him intimidate me. One of us has to keep an ounce of self-control. “You seem tense, Rylie,” Hunter comments. “I’m late for patrol,” I mutter, scanning the empty pack house around me. Everyone else

My elbow was instantly in the rogue’s ribs and he doubles over, coughing. “Get the others!” I order Val as I take another swing at the fallen male on the ground – smashing the base of my gun into his head and knocking him out cold. “You’ve picked the wrong day to mess with me,” I growl under my breath as I shoulder my gun and aim for the shelter of the trees.“Rylie, on your left!” I hear Val shout.I duck, spin on my heels and fire off to my left and the rogue is down in an instant. I can’t help but smile to myself. “Val, we need to move out!” I yell, climbing to my feet and breaking into a run.I’m surrounded in an instant, a rogue on either side of me. I can’t see Val in my peripheral vision, but pray she’s following behind me. I go to aim to my right, the rogue’s gun instantly mirroring mine. But instead of pulling the trigger, I duck and the bullet meant for my chest embeds itself in the rogue to my left. The other is down before it has a chance to realise its mistake.

The moans of pain grow louder the deeper into the forest I travel. They say you know when one of your own is hurt. It’s like their pain is your pain. You feel it in your veins, with each beat of your heart. And it hurts like hell. My heart feels as if it’s being pulled from my chest, my lungs burning with each breath I take. But I know I am getting closer. The trees envelope me in their canopy overhead, and the sky is starting to grow dark. But nothing will make me turn back and head for home. Not when one of my own is in pain and needs my help. I could never live with the guilt if I left them out here to die. But the air is growing cold. I shiver, goosebumps littering my flesh. I’m not sure what I plan to do when I find whoever is injured. With nothing but a knife and my bow, I’m almost as helpless, but I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. I cannot be the one to bring death to the pack for my own recklessness. We knew the threat of the rogues was in the

My mind spins with conflicting feelings.A rush of love.A confusion. It conflicts with my sense of duty to protect the pack. How can a rogue be my mate?I lower my bow, the arrow slipping from my fingers. Hunter sees the cuffs right away.A frown clouds his face."What is going on?" he asks."She let a rogue go," Val explains."What?" Hunter cries."She let a rogue go," Val says again."I don't believe it," Hunter says."I saw it with my own eyes," Val says. She nudges me. "Tell him, Rylie."Her voice is sharp.I can feel my face redden.I don't say anything.I just bow my head.Look down at my feet.I don't want to look at the alpha.I don't want to see the disappointment in his eyes."What do you have to say for yourself?" Hunter asks me.His voice is hard."I'm sorry," I say."Sorry?" Hunter asks. "That's it? You failed your mission! Let your pack down!"The disappointment is too much to bear.A lie appears in my mind.It is flimsy but it's all I've got.Lying to my alpha is not something I relish in doing. But otherwise, he will punish me.I am desperate."I mistook him as one of our own," I say."What?" I enter the mess hall for lunch.I feel like everyone is watching me.I grab some meat and beeline for the table where my friends sit.“Rylie, how’s your nose?” Tomasina jokes the second my backside hits the bench.Ah, so news of my so-called failing instincts has already spread around the pack-house.That's just perfect...“Very funny," I say.Tomasina leans up on her elbows so our faces are close. “Rylie. Come on. What the heck happened?”I can't tell her.I can't tell any of my friends. They all peer at me expectantly.I shove meat into my mouth."I don't know what happened," I murmur as I chew. "My instincts are usually good.”Tomasina studies me. "I'll say. You're one of the best gammas out there."I chew, putting all my focus on the food rather than the burning questions in my friend's eyes."Did Hunter flip?" she asks."Of course.""What did you tell him."I stare at the ceiling. They are not going to drop this, are they?"I apologized.""And he bought it?"

Night falls.I am in my room, lying in bed.I can hear the music and laughter of the pack drifting through the trees. I stare at him as my heart gallops."You came," he says."Yes.""I didn't know if you would. I was going to go to your territory to look for you."I gasp. "You can't do that! They will kill you on sight. They are extremely territorial and normally leaves no quarter for rogues or invaders.""It doesn't matter now. You came."He smiles at me.The embers light his face."Did you wait this whole time?" I ask.His hair falls across his face. He pushes it back. "Yes."I shiver against the frigid air. I'm surprised he didn't freeze to death. He takes a step toward me.I take a step toward him."We're mates," he says.I gasp.
