For a free, legal start, the J-Novel Club website lets you read the first parts of each volume without an account. The app itself is a bit utilitarian. I’ve had better luck with Google Play Books after buying a volume; it renders the EPUB beautifully on tablets. The real trick is checking where you bought the digital copy first—the best app is often the one that already has your library.

Most people will point you to the big stores, but my sleeper pick is the Kobo app. I bought a couple of the early volumes there during a sale, and the reading experience surprised me. The typography is clean, the page turns are smooth, and it doesn’t have the same aggressive upsell vibe some other apps push. It just feels like a good ebook reader that happens to have the light novels.
The downside is you don’t get any serialized content or early chapters—it’s strictly per-volume purchase. But if you’re looking to build a permanent, DRM-owned library and read offline without a subscription, it’s a strong contender. Their recommendation engine also nudged me toward 'So I'm a Spider, So What?' which filled the void while waiting for new Tensura volumes.

I’ve bounced between a few for reading 'That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime'. Honestly, the Shōsetsuka ni Narō webnovel originals are still up in Japanese, but for the polished light novel experience, the official English release on BookWalker is pretty solid. Their app handles the illustrations well, which is half the fun with Tensura—seeing Rimuru’s evolution and those big battle scenes in color. The sync between devices is reliable, and they often have coin-back campaigns.
That said, I also keep the J-Novel Club app installed. Their subscription gives you early access to prepub translations as they’re serialized, which is great if you want to stay ahead of the print volumes. The community translation notes in the margins are a nice touch for understanding some of the finer world-building details. I find their reading interface a bit plainer than BookWalker’s, but it’s incredibly functional for just plowing through text.

Reborn As The Villainess Luna In My Favorite Series

Elina thought she had hit rock bottom.
She lost her job. Her therapy session dredged up memories of the ex-boyfriend who stalked and traumatized her. The only thing she had left to look forward to was the finale of her favorite fantasy series, Moonbound Faith.
Then the show ended.
The heroes won. The villain died. Everyone got their happily-ever-after.
That same night, a knock at her door shatters what little peace she has left.
Her ex is standing outside.
The man who was supposed to be in prison.
Forced to flee into a storm, Elina runs until she reaches the edge of a cliff with nowhere left to go. Faced with a choice between death and returning to the man who destroyed her life, she jumps.
But instead of dying, she wakes up inside Moonbound Faith.
Not as the heroine.
Not as a side character.
But as Luna—the infamous villainess whose tragic death she celebrated only hours before.
Determined to survive, Elina plans to use her knowledge of the story to change her fate. But everything she thought she knew begins to unravel when a small boy tugs on her sleeve and calls her one word:
“Mom.”
The original story never mentioned a child.
And when Elina uncovers the truth behind his existence, she realizes something terrifying.
The villainess was never the villain.
The story lied.
And the ending she remembers may not be the ending waiting for her at all.
A thirty-year-old office lady, who got into an accident and is now trapped inside a novel series she loves. She was reincarnated into one of the side character extras of the story and meets in person the tyrant magician, the playboy prince, and the clueless female lead of the story.
She has been killed six times. Always by the same hands. Always by the men fated to love her.
Across six lifetimes and five shattered worlds, she dies the same death — not by strangers, not by enemies, but by the one soul the universe itself bound to hers. The Emotionless Emperor kills her on palace marble. The Strongest Under Heaven beheads her at a cliff's edge. The Star Emperor pierces her with starlight in a collapsing galaxy. The King of the Dead strangles her while weeping. The Dragon Monarch crushes her in hands that were meant to hold her. And in her sixth life, broken beyond grief, she simply stops breathing on her own.
She wakes before the God of Destiny — and learns the truth that destroyed everything.
The God grants her one final life. One world where all five powers exist. One chance to choose differently.
She enters her seventh life with no intention of choosing anything — except survival.
She is eighteen, razor-sharp, and carrying six lifetimes of grief behind serene eyes. When The Iron Sovereign, The Heavenly Saint, The Celestial Emperor, The Eclipse Pontiff, and The Crimson Dragon King all look at her across the same room for the first time, she already knows their faces from her nightmares.
She doesn't run. She plans.
But the universe has its own agenda. And the five men who murdered her across time are starting to remember.
The question was never whether they would love her again.
The question is whether love — and the people carrying it — can survive what it cost before.

Evy was a simple-minded girl. If there's work she's there.
Evy is a known workaholic. She works day and night, dedicating each of her waking hours to her jobs and making sure that she reaches the deadline.
On the day of her birthday, her body gave up and she died alone from exhaustion.
Upon receiving the chance of a new life, she was reincarnated as the daughter of the Duke of Polvaros and acquired the prose of living a comfortable life ahead of her.
Only she doesn't want that. She wants to work.
Even if it's being a maid, a hired killer, or an adventurer. She will do it.
The only thing wrong with Evy is that she has no concept of reincarnation or being isekaid. In her head, she was kidnapped to a faraway land… stranded in a place far away from Japan. So she has to learn things as she goes with as little knowledge as anyone else.
Having no sense of ever knowing that she was living in fantasy nor knowing the destruction that lies ahead in the future. Evy will do her best to live the life she wanted and surprise a couple of people on the way. Unbeknownst to her, all her actions will make a ripple. Whether they be for the better or worse.... Evy has no clue.
I basically live on Wuxiaworld for my 'Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken' fix. They have the official translation, updates are reliable, and the text formatting is clean. I've tried a couple of other aggregator sites, but the ads are so invasive they make reading a chore, and you never know if a chapter will just vanish.
Sometimes I cross-check with the fan-translated versions on Novel Updates forums if I'm desperate for the next chapter and the official site is a bit behind. The community notes there can be interesting, pointing out little translation nuances. For actually buying the digital volumes, BookWalker has them bundled nicely, but I'm mostly a web reader.
Man, I was in your exact spot last year. The official English release is way ahead on J-Novel Club's site, but they're not giving it away. Thing is, J-Novel does these 'pre-pub' sections where they translate a new chapter every week for subscribers, and sometimes they leave the very first volume's early chapters unlocked as a sample. I checked last month and I think the prologue and maybe chapter one of 'That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime' Vol. 1 were still up for free reading on their site.
It's not the whole thing, obviously, but it's a legit way to test the official translation's style. Past that, your library might have a digital loan system like OverDrive with the e-books. I borrowed Vol. 2 that way. Just brace yourself—if you like those samples, you'll probably end up wanting the subscription or buying the volumes. The official translations are super clean and include bonus content the fan versions often miss.
