I’d argue that Maureen Johnson’s whole bibliography is a goldmine for this. Besides 'Truly Devious,' her 'Shades of London' series starts with a ghost-sightings-turned-murder mystery, though it leans paranormal. Rory is a fantastic, pragmatic protagonist thrown into detective work.

Don’t sleep on older series like 'The Naturals' by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. It’s about teens recruited by the FBI for their profiling skills. Very Criminal Minds but for a younger audience. The dynamics between the genius kids are fun.

Huh. I’ve read a bunch of these, but I can’t think of one where the teen actually wants to be a detective for the sake of justice, not because they’re forced into it by trauma. Most start with a personal connection to the crime. Makes sense for drama, I guess.

For a sci-fi twist, 'The Loneliest Girl in the Universe' by Lauren James involves a teenage girl alone on a spaceship, receiving mysterious communications she has to decipher. It’s more psychological suspense, but the process is detective work.

Which mystery series for young adults feature diverse teen detectives?

Let me toss 'Firekeeper's Daughter' into the ring, though it's a standalone. Daunis, an Ojibwe teen, becomes an FBI informant after witnessing a murder. It's a deep, authentic dive into Indigenous community, culture, and the complexities of being an outsider/insider. The mystery is tense and procedural, but the heart is Daunis using her knowledge of both her culture and chemistry to solve the case. It's one of the best YA mysteries ever written, in my opinion, precisely because the protagonist's specific, diverse identity is the key to unraveling everything.

How do mystery novels for young adults portray teen detectives?

The romance subplot is almost a required ingredient, but its integration varies. In the best cases, the love interest is directly involved in the mystery—perhaps as a suspect, a helper with crucial skills, or even the person they're trying to protect. The romantic tension is amplified by the life-or-death stakes. Can they trust this person? Is their attraction clouding their judgment? In weaker portrayals, the romance feels tacked on, distracting from the main plot. But when done well, it raises the emotional stakes immensely. The fear of losing this person, or the betrayal if they're involved, cuts deeper than any generic threat. It also allows for moments of vulnerability; the detective can't maintain a cool, analytical facade 24/7 with someone they have feelings for. That humanity is essential.
