How Does Fanfiction Inheritance Cycle Explore Alternative Character Fates?

Oh, I've spent way too much time reading deep in that tag. The big one people focus on is, of course, Murtagh. So many fics can't stand where he ends up after the official books—exiled, mistrusted, carrying all that trauma. I've seen a ton of AUs where he either stays with the Varden, or where he and Nasuada actually make a relationship work from the start without the political nightmare that canon gives them. It's less about fixing him and more about giving him a community that doesn't constantly punish him for his father's choices.

Another path I find fascinating is for Angela the herbalist. Canon keeps her wonderfully mysterious, but fanfiction loves to pin down an origin story. I've read crossovers where she's a Time Lord from 'Doctor Who' or a centuries-old witch from another universe, which reframes all her cryptic advice as experience from other wars. It gives her a defined fate instead of an open-ended one.

Then there's the small, quiet stories about Sloan, the butcher from Carvahall. He vanishes from the narrative after his betrayal. I stumbled on a one-shot that followed him trying to rebuild a life in a remote village, haunted by his actions but never getting a grand redemption. It felt more real, and sadder, than any epic arc for a main character would have. Those alternative fates for the side characters often hit harder because the source material leaves so many blank spaces.

Mostly I see it fixating on relationships. Brom lives. Murtagh gets a proper family. The romance between Eragon and Arya isn't stalled by her immortality. It's wish-fulfillment, giving characters the comfort and closure the epic narrative couldn't afford. People write the quieter aftermath the books skipped.

Frankly, I think a lot of the 'alternative fate' stuff for the main trio—Eragon, Arya, Saphira—gets repetitive. It's either romantic happily-ever-afters in Ellesméra or power fantasies where Eragon becomes king. The more interesting explorations are the darker 'what ifs' that follow the logical consequences of the magic system. What if the Eldunarí Eragon carries influenced him more subtly toward their ancient grievances? I read a fic once where that slow corruption was the plot, and he became a well-intentioned dictator, with Arya and Saphira having to stop him. It was chilling because it felt possible.

Galbatorix's fate is another hotbed. Canon kills him off, but I've seen fics where he's imprisoned, his mind sealed away, forcing the new rulers to ethically deal with a living, dangerous repository of knowledge. That's a messier, more complicated political fate than a clean death. Those stories dive into the philosophy the series brushes against but never fully wades into.
