Try searching for 'Tom Riddle-centric' and 'canon divergence' on AO3. Skip the romance-focused ones if you want the ending to hinge on his choices, not a ship. A story called 'Full Circle' by tetsurashian explores a 'what if' he never made horcruxes, and the political path he takes instead. The ending feels inevitable yet totally unexpected. That's the sweet spot for me.

Honestly, a lot of the most creative AUs with good endings aren't always tagged 'alternate ending' directly. You gotta think about the premise tags. Look for 'time travel fix-it', 'Slytherin Harry', 'grey Harry', or 'Dark Harry not Lord Voldemort'. Those stories inherently rewrite the ending by changing the starting conditions. There's a shorter one on AO3 called 'The Train to Nowhere' by MayMarlow that's a full AU where Tom becomes a train conductor—sounds weird, but the character study and the quiet, resigned ending it builds to are incredible.
I sometimes get frustrated with rec lists because they all mention the same five mega-popular fics. The real gems are a few pages back in the search results, often with under 1000 kudos but stunning writing. Filter by 'Complete' and then just... start clicking on summaries that don't sound like everything else. The payoff is worth the sifting.

I feel like 'best' is pretty subjective depending on what flavor you're craving. The archiveofourown.org tag for Tom Riddle is absolutely packed, but it's a mixed bag. A trick I use is filtering for completed works over 50k words first—that usually weeds out the abandoned fics. Then I sort by bookmarks, not kudos. Bookmarks mean people saved it for later, which often points to more complex or re-readable plots, and those tend to have the interesting alternate endings.
For specifics, 'Diablerie' by Oceanbreeze7 on AO3 is one that really sticks with me. It's a Harry-time-travels-and-gets-sorted-into-Slytherin story, but the ending divergence from the usual 'fix-it' tropes is bleak and fascinating. It doesn't give you a neat bow. Also, don't sleep on the lesser-known pairing tags like Tom Riddle/Hermione Granger or even Tom Riddle & Harry Potter (gen). The dynamic in those often forces wildly different narrative conclusions than the standard Tom/LV path. The ffn.net app is okay for older classics, but the tagging on AO3 is just superior for this kind of deep dive.

Fates... How much do you believe in Fates?
Centuries ago, a prophecy was told. In time, bits of pieces were lost. The remaining was preserved but it left many questions:
"Every period of time comes forth the Archnemesis.
The night will fall like the snow in winter season
and the day will come like a flower that blooms in springtime.
War shall cause the lives of many and the weak shall suffer.
But lo, and behold, in a family of winter shall come the Blood Star of every generation.
Strength and might that shall spill the blood of its Adversary by the death with its soul."
Chloe Liu just wanted to become a fully pledged Kryst, a soldier of the Kingdom of Demetrius.
Lucian Liu and the members of the Seven Geniuses just wanted to protect his sister.
Prince Ciaran, the Særi ust Trūx (Future King), just wanted to protect the Kingdom of Demetrius along with his friends.
What if the Fates wanted more?
Ambition, love, manipulation, and power. The 27th Blood Star Bellatrix has to get through to the end. But will Bellatrix be able to turn the water to blood?
I've fallen down the rabbit hole of Harry Potter fanfiction more times than I can count, and Tom Riddle-centric fics have a special place in my heart. One that absolutely wrecked me was 'The Left Words'—a beautifully written time-travel fic where Harry raises young Tom. The way it explores nurture vs. nature while keeping Tom's chilling charm intact is masterful. The prose feels like something J.K. Rowling might have penned herself, with all the whimsy and darkness of the original series.
Another standout is 'Dodging Prison and Stealing Witches', which takes a wildly different approach with its sarcastic, manipulative Harry reborn as Tom's twin brother. The political intrigue and dark humor make it addictive, though definitely not for purists. For something shorter but equally haunting, 'Heir Apparent' delivers a perfect one-shot about Tom discovering Harry's Parseltongue ability during Chamber of Secrets. The psychological tension in that 8k word story rivals full-length novels.
Man, I'm always on the lookout for Tom Riddle fics that actually make you understand, not just excuse. The trick is finding ones that treat him like a person shaped by a horrific environment, not a monster born in a vacuum. A lot of the 'what if he was loved' stories feel too saccharine. The ones that stick with me are the ones where the horror is in the inevitability—the pieces were all there, and Hogwarts just assembled them.
For a deep psychological dive, I can't recommend 'aiongnion' on AO3 enough. Their series 'Diablerie' is a slow, painful unraveling of Tom's Hogwarts years, focusing on the intellectual arrogance and the terrifying loneliness that he twists into a weapon. It's less about dramatic dark magic and more about the quiet moments where he decides other people are just things. It genuinely made me uncomfortable in the best way. The prose is dense and literary, which isn't for everyone, but it's the closest I've seen to capturing that cold, analytical POV.
I also have a soft spot for 'The Silent World' by 'YouLightTheSky'. It’s a quieter take, exploring a Tom who becomes fascinated with the idea of creating a Horcrux not for power, but to preserve a perfect, silent moment of control—a really chilling motivation that feels more personal than megalomaniacal. The backstory with the orphanage is woven in through haunting sensory details, the feel of wool blankets, the taste of thin soup. It grounds the horror in something tangible.
I actually struggle with this a lot, because so much of what's tagged as 'emotional struggle' for Tom just turns into woobification. You know the type—where he's just a sad, misunderstood boy who needs love to fix him. That strips away the horror of what he becomes. The fics that work for me are the ones that treat his lack of empathy as the central struggle, not an external trauma to be healed.
I keep returning to 'the unbroken sanctuary' by inwardtransience. It's a time-travel Hermione fic, but the real focus is a terrifyingly clinical dissection of how Tom processes (or fails to process) human connection. His 'struggle' is almost an intellectual puzzle to him; he observes emotions in others like a scientist observing specimens, and his frustration comes from not being able to replicate the data, not from a desire to be 'good'. It's chilling, and feels truer to the canon premise of a born psychopath.
There's another one, 'Seven Devils' by justheretoreadhannibalfics, which is a crossover with 'Hannibal'. It frames his emotional landscape through the lens of aesthetic obsession and the creation of self-mythology. The struggle is about constructing a persona powerful enough to eclipse the 'ordinary' orphan boy, which I find a more compelling angle than simple angst.
