You can also get plain text files, which seem kinda bare-bones until you're trying to search for a specific quote in a 19th-century novel on a device with terrible processing power. Those TXT files load instantly. They have some books as single-page JPEGs or TIFFs of scanned pages, which I find nearly useless for actual reading; it's more for seeing the original typesetting or illustrations. For offline, you really want the EPUB or maybe the PDF if you care about page fidelity. I tried downloading a DjVu file once out of curiosity and my usual readers couldn't open it, so I had to find a specific app.

The collection is so vast that the available format depends entirely on how the book was digitized. A modern scan of an old book might have a clean EPUB from OCR, while a scanned first edition from a library might only be available as a series of image files. You just have to check the download options for each individual item. I usually stick to EPUB for prose and PDF for anything with complex layouts or lots of footnotes.
