Which Land Of Stories Book Should I Read After The Wishing Spell?

I'm absolutely loving the first book and the cliffhanger! Reading order confuses me—should I jump into the Enchantress Returns next or try a different spin-off series? Help!

Think about the supporting characters from the first book. Froggy? Goldilocks? They get majorly upgraded in the sequel. Their subplots intertwine with the main quest in meaningful ways, and you learn a lot more about their pasts and motivations. The world feels lived-in because these aren't just cameos anymore; they're active participants with their own agendas. If you wanted more from them, book two delivers.

The character arc for Alex gets incredibly intense in the second book. 'The Enchantress Returns' really focuses on her struggle with magic and the temptation of power, which was only hinted at in the first book. Conner's development is more about courage and using his wit in darker situations. If you're invested in them as people, this is the book where they stop being tourists and start being heroes with real scars. The emotional weight is significantly heavier, which some readers find more compelling.

Man, 'The Enchantress Returns' is the direct follow-up. Chris Colfer structures the series so each book builds directly on the previous cliffhanger. The Wishing Spell introduces the world and the core conflict with the Enchantress, and the second book dives headfirst into that. It's a much darker turn, honestly, with higher stakes and some genuinely tense moments. The characters you meet in the first book get developed a lot more. If you enjoyed the fairy-tale mashup vibe, it doubles down on that while expanding the lore.

I think it's the strongest entry in the series for showing how the twins grow up a bit.

What Land of Stories book should I start with as a new reader?

I see a lot of definitive answers here, which is fair. But I remember when I started, I was hesitant because the series seemed long. Someone told me just to read the summary of the first book online and jump to the third, which was their favorite. I'm really glad I ignored them. Reading the summary gave me the plot, but none of the heart. The actual experience of 'The Wishing Spell' is in the small character moments, the dialogue, the atmosphere. A wiki page can't replicate that. The book is short enough that there's no good excuse to skip it.

Start with 'The Wishing Spell'. That's the one that introduces the twins, Alex and Conner, and their whole adventure through the classic fairy tale kingdoms. The chronological order for the main six books is: 1. 'The Wishing Spell', 2. 'The Enchantress Returns', 3. 'A Grimm Warning', 4. 'Beyond the Kingdoms', 5. 'An Author's Odyssey', and 6. 'Worlds Collide'. After that, there's a prequel novel called 'The Mother Goose Diaries' and a companion book, 'A Treasury of Classic Fairy Tales'. Reading the prequel later is fine; it gives fun backstory but isn't essential for the main plot progression. Stick to that sequence to follow the character arcs and the overarching villain's story properly.

Why overcomplicate it? The books are numbered on the spines for a reason. Look at the little roman numeral or number near the title on the cover. Volume I, Volume II, etc. That's your foolproof guide. Some editions even have a series list right on the first few pages. Trust the physical (or digital) book's own labeling over any fan-made list that might accidentally include spin-offs.

The boxed sets they sell always contain the main six in order. That's the publisher telling you, "This is the story." If you buy a boxed set, you're golden. The companion books are never included in those sets, which tells you everything about their necessity to the core narrative. Buy the set, read left to right. Done.
