I found the setup in 'The Royal Romance, Book 1' completely wins me over—it's this fantastic workplace fantasy with a Cinderella twist. You step into the shoes of a waitress from New York who wins a contest for a chance to design a royal wedding cake. The moment she arrives in Cordonia, the fictional European kingdom, the plot becomes this delightful collision of a normal person navigating over-the-top royal protocol, palace intrigue, and the possibility of a literal fairytale romance.
Most of the story revolves around the social season, where the prince is expected to find a suitable bride from among a group of contestants. The core tension isn't just about winning his heart; it's about figuring out if you even want to be part of this gilded cage. You're constantly balancing genuine connection with the prince—who's way more layered than the tabloids suggest—against the scheming of other suitors and the oppressive expectations of the royal court. The plot cleverly uses tasks like a press interview, a polo match, and royal banquets as both fun set-pieces and tests of your character's adaptability and values.
The real hook for me is how it frames choice. Every dialogue option and major decision feels like it's steering not just your relationship with Prince Liam, but also shaping your own identity within this strange new world. Will you play the game and conform, or will you challenge tradition and be yourself, even if it risks everything? That question is the engine of the entire book, and it makes the reading experience incredibly personal. The last chapters, leading up to the first major ball and its dramatic aftermath, set the stage perfectly for the deeper conspiracies and tougher choices that come in the sequels.

This prince?
He’s anything but charming.
I’ve never been the girl who’s dreamt of a prince rescuing me from a fire-breathing dragon before whisking me away to his castle.
So when I fly all the way to Ireland to find my long-lost dad, I have no intention of playing the damsel in distress to some dude.
But the night I encounter—and accidentally wallop upside the head—Prince Olivier of Salasia, my plans are completely upended.
This prince is the opposite of charming, though. After thirty seconds in his presence, I want to feed him to a dragon.
But fate is a fickle b*tch. Before I know it, I agree to team up with Olivier in the search for my dad.
As I travel across Europe with this actual honest-to-god prince, I wonder, what’s the worst that could happen?
It’s not like I’ll be stupid enough to fall in love with Prince Charming."

In 'The Royal Romance Book 1', you're essentially stepping into the shoes of the main character, a talented and driven pastry chef from New York. She's the one you'll be making choices for, navigating this unexpected new world. The story truly kicks off when she wins a contest and travels to the European kingdom of Cordonia. There, she meets Prince Liam, the crown prince who is handsome, dutiful, and under immense pressure to find a suitable bride.
The other potential suitors who become key players are Drake Walker, the prince's best friend and a deeply loyal, sarcastic commoner with a guarded heart, and Maxwell Beaumont, an endlessly optimistic and quirky noble from a somewhat down-on-its-luck house who becomes your biggest cheerleader. The social dynamics are heavily influenced by Lady Hana, a fellow suitor who becomes a genuine friend, and the intimidatingly elegant Olivia Nevrakis, a duchess with strong opinions about who is worthy of the prince.
Much of the tension also comes from your character's interactions with the king, Constantine, a stern traditionalist, and the queen, Regina, who embodies regal grace but has her own plans. A pivotal figure is the prince's ex-fiancée, Madeleine, a noblewoman whose return complicates everything. The journey is really about how your character balances her own identity with the glittering yet rigid world of royalty, figuring out who to trust among this ensemble cast.
It's basically a fake-dating-in-academia scenario with a royal twist, which sounds like every other YA romance trope thrown in a blender, but Rachel Hawkins makes it work by keeping the focus on Millie's perspective. She's this American commoner who gets a scholarship to this fancy Scottish boarding school, and her roommate turns out to be Flora, an actual princess hiding from paparazzi. The central conflict isn't some grand conspiracy; it's the tension between Millie wanting a normal, ambitious life and being drawn into Flora's glittering, restrictive world. The 'will they, won't they' is predictable, but the setting in the Highlands and the fish-out-of-water comedy bits give it enough freshness.
Honestly, the main plot is a slow-burn romance disguised as a coming-of-age story. Millie starts out resenting the princess act, then gets reluctantly charmed, and the real question becomes whether a relationship built on secrecy and vastly different life expectations can last beyond the school gates. It’s less about shocking twists and more about whether the emotional payoff feels earned, which for me, it mostly did, even if the ending felt a bit neat.
