This was the main thing that got me to finally download the Kindle app on my phone. The sample system is seamless. You don't even need to 'borrow' or 'buy' the free book first. Just find it in the Kindle store, tap 'Send a free sample,' and it pops up in your library like any other book. The sample even syncs your progress if you later get the full version.
It fundamentally changed how I browse. I have a whole collection of samples I dip into when I'm between books. It feels less like shopping and more like having a constantly refreshing shelf of potential reads. The only minor gripe is I wish you could adjust the sample length for really long novels.

Absolutely, it's standard. Apps like Kobo, Nook, and Apple Books all offer chapter previews for free titles directly through their storefronts. It's the best way to check the writing style and formatting before you download. Just look for the 'Preview' or 'Read Sample' link on the book's page.

Huh, sometimes it’s there and sometimes it’s not, drives me a little nuts. Like on the Google Play Books app, even for free titles, there’s often a 'Preview' button. But I’ve noticed it depends heavily on the publisher providing that content. A lot of the classic, out-of-copyright stuff? Might just dump you into the full thing, which is fine I guess, but not helpful if you're trying to test the translation or formatting.
For newer indie books offered free, they usually have a sample to hook you. I tend to just tap around the store page of any reader app first; the functionality is more a store feature than a library feature within the app.

I definitely need to skim a chapter before committing. My library uses Libby and you can send a sample to your Kindle or other device just by tapping 'Read Sample' from the book's page. It's not just a random excerpt—it sends the publisher's official preview, usually the first chapter or two, which is perfect.
I've found the quality of these previews is generally better than what you might find on a random website, and it integrates right into your normal reading flow. The downside is it's not universal; some older public domain titles might not have a sample, but for new releases, it's a consistent feature that helps me decide what to borrow next.
It makes trying things out feel low-risk and integrated, which keeps me using the app more often.

When desire takes over, can love truly follow?
My current obsession has been browsing apps that let you sample the opening chapter without any upfront commitment. I've found that both the official Amazon Kindle app and Google Play Books offer this as a standard feature for most titles. You just tap the 'Read Sample' button and it downloads the intro directly. It's a pretty seamless way to gauge the author's writing style before you spend anything.
I've also had good luck with the Libby app, though that's a bit different—it connects to your library card, so the whole book is free if you borrow it. But even there, you can peek at the first few pages instantly while you wait on a hold list. For serials, WebNovel and Radish have a similar model where the first several episodes are always free to hook you, which works great for testing ongoing stories.
