Huh, that's a tricky one. Romance novels being free in EPUB is kind of a minefield. A lot of the sites that pop up first in searches are usually unofficial upload hubs, which I try to avoid. The files can be corrupted, have weird formatting, or just vanish. I used to grab a few from these random forums years back and ended up with a version of 'Pride and Prejudice' that had the last three chapters replaced with what seemed like a car repair manual. Not exactly the happy ending I was looking for.
Your absolute safest bet is actually your local library, if they have a digital service. Apps like Libby or OverDrive let you 'borrow' EPUBs with your library card. The selection varies wildly by library system, but you can find tons of contemporary romance, historicals, even some indie stuff. The waitlists for popular new releases can be long, but it's 100% legal and the files are perfect. It's not a 'download and keep forever' model, which some people find annoying, but it's free access.
Beyond that, some authors and publishers run promos where the first book in a series is free on platforms like Amazon or Kobo. You'd have to temporarily use their app to get it, but often you can strip the DRM or just read it there. Also, don't sleep on Project Gutenberg for classic romance novels—think Jane Austen, the Brontës, Georgette Heyer. Those are public domain, so the EPUBs are high-quality and yours to keep. For anything recent, though, the free-and-legal path is mostly about borrowing, not owning.

Honestly? Just get a Kindle Unlimited trial. It's not free forever, but it's like a massive all-you-can-read buffet for romance. You won't technically 'download' an EPUB you own, but you can read offline in the app. The catalogue is huge for the genre. I burned through like twenty shifter romance series in a month for like $0.99. After that, if you read fast, it's cheaper than buying individual books anyway. For truly free EPUBs you keep, you're mostly looking at classics or taking a chance on sketchy sites I wouldn't recommend.

I’ve spent years scouring the web for free romance novels, and I’ve found a few gems. Websites like Project Gutenberg are fantastic for classic romance novels like 'Pride and Prejudice' or 'Jane Eyre' since they’re public domain. For more contemporary stuff, I rely on sites like ManyBooks or Feedbooks, which have a decent selection of free romance epubs, though you might have to sift through some less popular titles. I also check out Open Library occasionally—it’s like a digital borrowing system where you can 'check out' books for free. Just remember, not all free sites are legal, so I stick to reputable ones to avoid pirated content. It’s worth bookmarking a few and checking back regularly since they update their collections.
A friend got me into using Calibre with the DeDRM plugin for library books. I'm not advocating for breaking DRM on books you'd normally pay for, but for library loans, it lets me keep a copy if I don't finish in time. I know it's a legal gray area, but it removes the stress of the clock for slow readers. The books still get returned on time from the library's perspective.
For a more social approach, check out Goodreads groups dedicated to eBook deals or specific genres. Members constantly share links to free and discounted EPUBs. It's more manual than a dedicated site, but the recommendations come from real, enthusiastic readers, so the signal-to-noise ratio is pretty good.
Navigating the world of free EPUB downloads feels like treasure hunting—sometimes you strike gold, other times you hit dead ends. My go-to is Project Gutenberg, a classic with over 60,000 public domain titles. The interface isn't flashy, but it's reliable, and the EPUBs are properly formatted. I've downloaded everything from 'Pride and Prejudice' to obscure 19th-century philosophy texts there. Another gem is Open Library; their 'borrow' system for modern books feels like a digital library card. Just last week, I snagged a pristine EPUB of 'The Great Gatsby' during their unlimited borrowing event.
For more contemporary works, I occasionally brave Z-Library (though its legality is murky). Their EPUB selection is vast, but the site's instability makes it a last resort. What I love about Standard Ebooks is their meticulous formatting—they take Project Gutenberg texts and polish them with proper typography and covers. It's like comparing a handwritten manuscript to a bookstore hardcover. Sometimes I cross-check multiple sites; if one has a badly scanned EPUB, another might have a cleaner version.
