Ignore the novels at first. Find his letters. The man was a hilarious, grumpy, brilliant correspondent. You fall in love with the mind behind Marlowe. Then, when you read the fiction, it's like hearing from an old, witty, and deeply cynical friend. It adds a rich layer of context.
Skip straight to 'The Long Goodbye.' It's his masterpiece, a deeper, more melancholic and psychologically complex novel. If you start with the early, more plot-driven stuff, you might not appreciate the evolution. But if your first taste is his mature, philosophical work, you'll be hooked and can then appreciate where he came from. It's a bold strategy, but it worked for me.
Start with a later novel, then read the early ones as prequels. See the weary, disillusioned end point, then go back to see the slightly more optimistic (relatively speaking) beginnings. It's a tragic arc in reverse, which is kinda cool.
Are you a completist? If yes, publication order, no question. You'll spend less time worrying about 'where to start next' and just enjoy the ride. If you're a sampler, pick the one with the coolest vintage paperback cover. Your eyes will thank you.

The reading order question is a modern obsession, applying series logic to a body of work that predates it. Chandler was writing for an audience that picked up whatever the magazine or bookstore had that month. He couldn't assume they'd read the last one.
So liberate yourself from that. Choose based on the cover, the title, the first line. The connection is in the relentless voice and the rain-slicked streets, not in plot points.
The character of Marlowe himself is the source of the grit. He’s not a genius; he’s a stubborn, honorable man in a dishonorable world. Watching him get punched, drugged, and betrayed yet still follow his own code is the core of every story. So in that sense, any Chandler book will give you that. Start with whichever one you can find.
Consider the literary critics' angle. 'The Little Sister' is often analyzed for its postmodern qualities—Marlowe as a figure out of time, the artificiality of Hollywood. That meta-fictional layer influenced later, more experimental crime writers who wanted to deconstruct the genre. Its influence is on the highbrow end of the spectrum, where crime fiction is used to critique itself and its settings. A quieter, but intellectually significant, influence.
‘Farewell, My Lovely’ has the single best opening chapter in all of noir, fight me. Marlowe meeting Moose Malloy in that bar. The description of Malloy is iconic, and the dialogue is pitch-perfect. Within three pages, you’re immersed in a world of muscle, nostalgia, and impending violence. The style isn’t just descriptive; it’s muscular and rhythmic, pushing the scene forward with a grim inevitability. If someone asked me for ten pages that encapsulate Chandler, I’d hand them those. The rest of the book is great, but that opening is a masterclass in establishing tone, character, and stakes without an ounce of fat.
