Chapter 1

“Let’s get a divorce, Renee.”

The man’s cold voice sounded from behind while Renee Everheart was in the middle of searing steaks. After hearing those words, she became seemingly numb to the hot oil splattering on her cheeks from the lightly sizzling pan.

“We’re only husband and wife on paper. Now that four years have passed, it’s time to end this,” Stefan Hunt said with a cold, distant tone.

Renee bit her lip anxiously.

‘Looks like this day was inevitable after all…’

Her family was declared bankrupt four years ago. Her parents, unable to endure the stress of financial hardship, took their lives together, leaving young Renee to handle the mess alone.

In the past, Renee’s grandfather fought alongside Stefan’s grandfather on the battlefield, and he even saved the latter’s life once. In his dying moments, he voiced out to his old pal his concern for his granddaughter and left Renee under his care.

And so, a marriage of convenience was arranged between Stefan and Renee to put the old man’s concerns to rest.

As time passed, Renee found herself falling in love with the man she married. She thought that as long as she played the role of a good wife, he would reciprocate her feelings one day.

However, what transpired was the complete opposite of what she had hoped for.

“I’ll give you 40 million dollars and a penthouse at Long Beach. Here are the divorce papers. Sign them if you have no objections.”

Stefan then pushed a document towards Renee. His stern expression indicated that this was no more than another business transaction to him.

Renee skimmed through the string of numbers.

‘40 million dollars for four years, huh? The Hunts are still as wealthy as ever,’ she thought to herself.

“Do we have to?” She put down the document and stared at her husband.

The man she had loved for four years was drop-dead gorgeous, yet his beautiful face was always stern and distant.

“Yes,” Stefan replied without a hint of hesitation.

Renee’s heart stung, but she was not one to drag things out. As her objections had fallen on deaf ears, she knew it was time for her to go.

‘Whatever, I got 40 million for the years I’ve spent being his wife. This is more than worth it!’

“Alright.” She picked up a pen and scribbled her signature on the papers decisively.

Stefan was taken aback by her resoluteness. The Renee he knew was fragile and indecisive, and he had never seen this side of her.

For some reason, this left a sour taste in his mouth.

“I’ll let you know once this is processed. If it’s possible, I’d like you to move out by tonight.” The man said, brushing off the unpleasant feeling in his chest before leaving.

It was painfully obvious that he didn’t intend on discussing the matter over.

On the very same night, the housekeeper immediately threw Renee’s belongings out of the villa after receiving news of the divorce. It wasn’t like she respected Renee back then, but now that they were officially separating, she became openly hostile.

“Serves you right, you gold-digging leech! It’s about time they decided to kick you out!”

Renee had no choice but to crouch down and pick her scattered clothing up. The cold night breeze only served to rub salt in her wound.

Just then, she heard the sound of a car rolling to a stop behind her. A tall slender woman emerged from the vehicle.

“Ms. Desrosiers, you’re here! Welcome, welcome!” The housekeeper, who was just yelling profanities at Renee, immediately jumped to the guest’s assistance.

However, Briar Desrosiers didn’t even bother to spare the housekeeper a glance. “Be careful with my belongings. If you break even a single thing, you wouldn’t be able to pay it back within a lifetime.”

Renee’s entire body stiffened up. In mere seconds, the pieces fell into place in her mind.

Certainly, Renee knew why Liam and Leia hid those things from her. They did not want her to worry about it. Hence, she did not blame them. She just sighed helplessly."We're friends. Don't you know me? You underestimated me. I've experienced a lot of things. Of course, a small company crisis won't affect me."In the past, she dominated all forces. She had tackled greater stress and difficult issues. Of course, a drop in the company's achievement was not a big deal."It's different now. Boss… You have to admit that you're old." Liam sounded calm, risking being punched by Renee."What did you say? Did you just call me old?" Renee widened her eyes and looked at Liam. She found him a stranger. In the past, Liam admired Renee as if he were bewitched. His eyes always shone with innocence and stupidity. But after that torturing experience, he had grown a lot more mature. Initially, he was her lackey, but he had transformed into an independent man. He also stopped admiring her. Inste

The employees got to work at Azure Group at nine o'clock in the morning, but Renee had reached the company before it was half past seven in the morning that day. She was busy with the children and taking care of Margaret previously. Hence, it had been almost half a month since she last went there."Ms. Everheart, you're here! We miss you so much!"Eira Penn, Renee's capable assistant, saw Renee appear out of the blue in the chairman's office. She got so surprised that she nearly dropped her coffee."Calm down. I'm not dead yet." Renee smiled and teased while flipping a document in her hands. It was hard to hire loyal and capable employees since the establishment of Azure Group, but Eira was the one who had started working for Renee from the start. Hence, she was Renee's most trustworthy confidant."Here's your coffee, Ms. Everheart."Eira could not stop smiling. She happily went to Renee and placed the coffee down.It was the kind of coffee Renee liked. Although Renee rarely

Renee paused and waved indifferently. "Hey, why did you suddenly bring him up? I have nothing to do with him. I've already stayed away from men.""If it's the same, I don't think men are that horrible," Caia whispered.Renee became confused and asked curiously, "Why did you say that?""At least, I think he cares about you. Maybe the pain you cause him is greater than the pain he causes you," Caia said something profound. Most of the time, outsiders could see things clearly.Caia had long heard about the heartbreaking romance between Stefan and Renee. Also, Stefan seemed like a bad guy. However, she felt that he was not as bad as the stories had it after the few times she got in touch with him. "I feel that he isn't that bad since he could risk his life for you, especially when he went out and collected those herbs to cure you."Caia had been chatting with Margaret these days. Sometimes Margaret would talk about the things between Renee and Stefan. Naturally, she did not

Although Margaret was joking, Caia was rather curious about that question because she had never been in love. She sipped the aromatic floral tea and blinked eagerly, and asked, "Ren, is it good to not give up on a man?" "Forget it." Since Renee had experienced that, she naturally knew how difficult and torturing it was. She did not want Caia to take the same path. Thus, she answered honestly, "It's better to stay away from men rather than refuse to give up on a man. Most of the time, men won't change. You can't easily let go. It's better to stay far away from them." Renee's meaning was clear. Even fools could understand what she was trying to say.Caia also understood the profound meaning in her words. There would be different kinds of men. Besides, they would have all kinds of ways to cheat on women. If one did not want to get hurt, the most effective way was to stay away from men. "Got it, Ren. Don't worry. I won't date any men. As long as I stay away from them, I won't g

"It's none of my business." Renee ignored the question. She wanted to answer it, but she had no idea what answer it would be.If she said yes, she would feel heartbroken to see Stefan with another woman. If she said no, both of them would be forever entangled in that mess if they kept being single. It was a difficult case. Hence, Renee decided to stop dwelling on it. "Are you done? Just do the dishes. I'll go to bed." Renee did not want to get into an ambiguous relationship with him. She just needed to confirm something. Currently, he might still be single. Hence, he did not seek another woman solely because of the effects of the herb. It instantly eased her mind."Go ahead. It's late." Stefan stopped asking, too. He decided to keep a distance from her at a suitable time. Renee quietly stood up and walked to the stairs. She wanted to have a sound sleep."Don't worry. I won't seek another woman."Stefan looked at the familiar figure on the stairs and promised at some point.

Although that was the case, the two of them shared the pasta harmoniously.Stefan was not hungry, but he became starved for no reason when he saw Renee. He had no idea if he was physically attached to her, but he could be certain that his few desires were related to Renee. For example, he would feel like eating when he was with her. He would sleep better with her. Besides, he would feel quite aroused with her. In short, all of his physical desires and the desire to survive came from Renee.Stefan finished eating and remarked with satisfaction, "I'm full!" It had been a long time since he felt quite satisfied. It was merely because of a plate of pasta."You're exaggerating. It's just a plate of pasta." Renee could not understand why he doted on the pasta, given that he must have eaten a lot of nice food because of his station."Yeah, but it's more than that. In short… It's been a long time since I've had such a satisfying supper." Stefan appeared relaxed and delighted. "Really
