Chapter 1

“Let’s get a divorce, Renee.”

The man’s cold voice sounded from behind while Renee Everheart was in the middle of searing steaks. After hearing those words, she became seemingly numb to the hot oil splattering on her cheeks from the lightly sizzling pan.

“We’re only husband and wife on paper. Now that four years have passed, it’s time to end this,” Stefan Hunt said with a cold, distant tone.

Renee bit her lip anxiously.

‘Looks like this day was inevitable after all…’

Her family was declared bankrupt four years ago. Her parents, unable to endure the stress of financial hardship, took their lives together, leaving young Renee to handle the mess alone.

In the past, Renee’s grandfather fought alongside Stefan’s grandfather on the battlefield, and he even saved the latter’s life once. In his dying moments, he voiced out to his old pal his concern for his granddaughter and left Renee under his care.

And so, a marriage of convenience was arranged between Stefan and Renee to put the old man’s concerns to rest.

As time passed, Renee found herself falling in love with the man she married. She thought that as long as she played the role of a good wife, he would reciprocate her feelings one day.

However, what transpired was the complete opposite of what she had hoped for.

“I’ll give you 40 million dollars and a penthouse at Long Beach. Here are the divorce papers. Sign them if you have no objections.”

Stefan then pushed a document towards Renee. His stern expression indicated that this was no more than another business transaction to him.

Renee skimmed through the string of numbers.

‘40 million dollars for four years, huh? The Hunts are still as wealthy as ever,’ she thought to herself.

“Do we have to?” She put down the document and stared at her husband.

The man she had loved for four years was drop-dead gorgeous, yet his beautiful face was always stern and distant.

“Yes,” Stefan replied without a hint of hesitation.

Renee’s heart stung, but she was not one to drag things out. As her objections had fallen on deaf ears, she knew it was time for her to go.

‘Whatever, I got 40 million for the years I’ve spent being his wife. This is more than worth it!’

“Alright.” She picked up a pen and scribbled her signature on the papers decisively.

Stefan was taken aback by her resoluteness. The Renee he knew was fragile and indecisive, and he had never seen this side of her.

For some reason, this left a sour taste in his mouth.

“I’ll let you know once this is processed. If it’s possible, I’d like you to move out by tonight.” The man said, brushing off the unpleasant feeling in his chest before leaving.

It was painfully obvious that he didn’t intend on discussing the matter over.

On the very same night, the housekeeper immediately threw Renee’s belongings out of the villa after receiving news of the divorce. It wasn’t like she respected Renee back then, but now that they were officially separating, she became openly hostile.

“Serves you right, you gold-digging leech! It’s about time they decided to kick you out!”

Renee had no choice but to crouch down and pick her scattered clothing up. The cold night breeze only served to rub salt in her wound.

Just then, she heard the sound of a car rolling to a stop behind her. A tall slender woman emerged from the vehicle.

“Ms. Desrosiers, you’re here! Welcome, welcome!” The housekeeper, who was just yelling profanities at Renee, immediately jumped to the guest’s assistance.

However, Briar Desrosiers didn’t even bother to spare the housekeeper a glance. “Be careful with my belongings. If you break even a single thing, you wouldn’t be able to pay it back within a lifetime.”

Renee’s entire body stiffened up. In mere seconds, the pieces fell into place in her mind.

"Uh, I didn't see anything. Please continue!"Renee covered her eyes and backed into the bedroom.Only then did Xavier let go of Leia. He looked a little embarrassed. "Why is she here, too? You could've told me.""I would have, if you gave me the chance," Leia replied with a frown. She was getting worked up a little, but she forced herself to stay calm. After all this time with Xavier, and even when he had professed his love countless times, she still felt that his feelings for her weren't the same as for Renee or Shirley. One was natural affection, while the other was just out of convenience. The more she thought about it, the more she realized that staying apart was the wisest choice. It would at least stop the emotional drain."I'm not joking. I really chose to break up with you, and I want you to take it seriously. Respect me. Don't make me hate you," Leia said firmly after taking a deep breath."Are you sure?" Xavier's expression returned to normal, but his gaze turned sl

"Cut it out. I'm not your girlfriend. Please respect my boundaries!"This time, Leia's tone was calm. It was cool, distant, and unmistakably firm. For her, some things could be said in jest and taken back the next day, but others were spoken only after serious thought. For the latter, once she said them, they were final."I'm going back to sleep. Please leave."She finished speaking and moved to close the door.Xavier shamelessly stretched out his arm and braced it against the door. "Come on, don't be so cold. Even if you're not my girlfriend, we're still friends, right? And even if we broke up, I still have the right to pursue you. Let me come in and sit for a bit. At least have breakfast before you go back to sleep. How about that?"Leia hesitated for a second when she saw how sincere he looked. That single second was all Xavier needed. He seized the moment and slipped right past her."Hey! What do you think you're doing? I didn't say you could come in. Get out!" Leia shout

Xavier froze for a moment. There was a lot he wanted to say, but he didn't know where to start. From an outsider's perspective, he and Leia seemed perfect for each other, but only he truly understood the problems between them.Regardless of what happened, he knew he had to try to fight for this relationship."Whether she's right for me, I'll decide for myself. I'll figure out our problems. I'm not like you, hiding behind the idea of true love because you’re too afraid to act!"After saying all that, Xavier stormed off. He was still seething. He didn't even know what exactly he was angry about. Maybe, deep down, he had projected too much of his own feelings onto Stefan and Renee, seeing in their relationship a mirror of what his future with Leia might look like. They were happy and complete, and that gave him hope that he could be happy too. However, every relationship was unique. He couldn't compare his feelings or project them onto someone else. He had to fight for his own rela

Stefan listened to Xavier in silence for a long moment before finally speaking. "Let things take their course. If fate wants us together, then we'll be together. If fate wants us apart, I'll accept it willingly."At first, when Stefan learned about the long-buried grudges between the two families, he felt hopeless and pessimistic. All he wanted was to cut ties with Renee, thinking it was the best way to protect her.He told himself he was a ruthless man. He thought he could make hard choices and sever emotional attachments for the greater good. But the moment he realized he could lose Renee, fear hit him. When he heard that Renee was going to marry Justin, the pain nearly killed him, but he forced himself to suppress the urge to steal her back.It wasn't until later, when Jovan went through with that wedding heist for him, that Stefan realized he wasn't nearly as detached as he'd thought. He simply couldn't let Renee leave his world completely. After struggling with it for so lo

"I don't think you realize how serious it is. She's not going to stand here and look at you forever. She's going to change."Xavier grew agitated. He punched the table and said indignantly, "She's a human being with individual thoughts and feelings. She'll feel pain and be sad. You keep turning her down. It's repetitive torture. Even if she won't go, her patience will one day be depleted. She won't keep loving you!"The previous conversation with Renee made Xavier realize how desperate and disappointed Renee was. Renee persuaded him not to lose Leia. Of course, she was trying to persuade Stefan not to lose her. However, Renee did not dare to say that to Stefan face-to-face out of her dignity as a woman. As Stefan's best friend, Xavier felt it necessary to help Renee transmit the message. "You're not clear about our situation. So, I have nothing better to say. It's fine even if she's changed. I sincerely hope that she can change," Stefan said, heartbroken. "Why can't you make

  • The Untouchable Ex-Wife   Chapter 2686

After that, Renee turned and left. She knew that Leia loved Xavier deeper than Xavier loved Leia. Hence, Leia would be more heartbroken because of that breakup and needed Renee more. Xavier stood where he was. After a long contemplation, he immediately called Stefan. Renee was right. If she could not forget about him, she should not let him go. Xavier decided to save those words for Stefan. At that moment, Xavier finally understood something. He and Stefan were friends who were as close as brothers. But similarly, they were all cowards in their romances. He would not lose Leia, and he did not want Stefan to lose Renee either. Both Stefan and Xavier were sitting in a high-end booth in a bar. After listening to Xavier's persuasion, Stefan calmly drank some wine and said, "Is this why you urgently called me late at night and asked me to come here?""What's with this look? Don't you agree with this?" Xavier felt perturbed to see Stefan's indifferent look. He felt sorry for
