“Let’s get a divorce, Renee.”

The man’s cold voice sounded from behind while Renee Everheart was in the middle of searing steaks. After hearing those words, she became seemingly numb to the hot oil splattering on her cheeks from the lightly sizzling pan.

“We’re only husband and wife on paper. Now that four years have passed, it’s time to end this,” Stefan Hunt said with a cold, distant tone.

Renee bit her lip anxiously.

‘Looks like this day was inevitable after all…’

Her family was declared bankrupt four years ago. Her parents, unable to endure the stress of financial hardship, took their lives together, leaving young Renee to handle the mess alone.

In the past, Renee’s grandfather fought alongside Stefan’s grandfather on the battlefield, and he even saved the latter’s life once. In his dying moments, he voiced out to his old pal his concern for his granddaughter and left Renee under his care.

And so, a marriage of convenience was arranged between Stefan and Renee to put the old man’s concerns to rest.

As time passed, Renee found herself falling in love with the man she married. She thought that as long as she played the role of a good wife, he would reciprocate her feelings one day.

However, what transpired was the complete opposite of what she had hoped for.

“I’ll give you 40 million dollars and a penthouse at Long Beach. Here are the divorce papers. Sign them if you have no objections.”

Stefan then pushed a document towards Renee. His stern expression indicated that this was no more than another business transaction to him.

Renee skimmed through the string of numbers.

‘40 million dollars for four years, huh? The Hunts are still as wealthy as ever,’ she thought to herself.

“Do we have to?” She put down the document and stared at her husband.

The man she had loved for four years was drop-dead gorgeous, yet his beautiful face was always stern and distant.

“Yes,” Stefan replied without a hint of hesitation.

Renee’s heart stung, but she was not one to drag things out. As her objections had fallen on deaf ears, she knew it was time for her to go.

‘Whatever, I got 40 million for the years I’ve spent being his wife. This is more than worth it!’

“Alright.” She picked up a pen and scribbled her signature on the papers decisively.

Stefan was taken aback by her resoluteness. The Renee he knew was fragile and indecisive, and he had never seen this side of her.

For some reason, this left a sour taste in his mouth.

“I’ll let you know once this is processed. If it’s possible, I’d like you to move out by tonight.” The man said, brushing off the unpleasant feeling in his chest before leaving.

It was painfully obvious that he didn’t intend on discussing the matter over.

On the very same night, the housekeeper immediately threw Renee’s belongings out of the villa after receiving news of the divorce. It wasn’t like she respected Renee back then, but now that they were officially separating, she became openly hostile.

“Serves you right, you gold-digging leech! It’s about time they decided to kick you out!”

Renee had no choice but to crouch down and pick her scattered clothing up. The cold night breeze only served to rub salt in her wound.

Just then, she heard the sound of a car rolling to a stop behind her. A tall slender woman emerged from the vehicle.

“Ms. Desrosiers, you’re here! Welcome, welcome!” The housekeeper, who was just yelling profanities at Renee, immediately jumped to the guest’s assistance.

However, Briar Desrosiers didn’t even bother to spare the housekeeper a glance. “Be careful with my belongings. If you break even a single thing, you wouldn’t be able to pay it back within a lifetime.”

Renee’s entire body stiffened up. In mere seconds, the pieces fell into place in her mind.

"That's unnecessary!" Renee refused without any hesitation. Her tone icy, she added, "Yes, I'm busy, but I've got enough people at home. My brother can also help me take care of the kids. You don't have to worry about it." "Why did you put it that way? Adie and Abby belong to our family, too. We should take care of them, but you make it sound like it's troublesome for us. Stop saying all that!" Francine said. Unused to how Renee acted like a stranger, she was displeased. She would have long fallen out with Renee, given her past temper. However, she doted on Renee and wanted to see Renee make peace with Stefan.Hence, she endured her anger and complained only a little."Stop talking, Mom. All we need to do is respect Ren's arrangements regarding the kids. Plus, I can help take care of them at Everheart Manor," Stefan said.Stefan didn't want to see them get into a fight. Hence, he calmly stopped Francine from complaining. "Stef, why do you think I said that? I did it for your

That night, Renee wanted to wait for Alexander to come home and ask him about the past related to his generation. However, in the end, she found out that Alexander had to attend a last-minute scientific conference and wouldn't return to the country in the near future. After some deliberation, Renee gave up and planned to leave with Adie and Abby. Timothy felt unhappy; he held the children's hands and refused to let them go. "We're having a great time, but you want to break us apart. No, I won't agree."Adie and Abby grabbed Timothy and refused to leave, too. "Yeah, Mommy. Let us stay here and play with him. He's telling us about his war experiences. It's interesting." It was a novelty to spend some time with Timothy, and it was interesting. It got better when Timothy talked about his movie-like experiences. It felt lifelike and piqued their interest. Currently, they were immersed in listening to Timothy's story. They felt like they were in the middle of a game, so they were fu

Renee looked into Stefan's eyes and understood him. At the same time, she was puzzled. She understood his feelings for her and that he cared about her, but she couldn't understand why he wanted to stay away from her."Stefan, I want to ask you…" Renee wanted to get to the bottom of it when Francine spoke up behind her."I was wondering where you guys were. So, you were in the garden. What are you talking about?" Renee and Stefan subconsciously pulled away from each other as if they were avoiding something. "Nothing much. We're just checking if there's anything that needs renovation here," Stefan replied indifferently. "Ren, what do you think?" Francine ignored Stefan's iciness and smiled at Renee. She looked quite amiable, as if she hadn't argued with Renee before. Hearing Stefan, Renee gave a casual reply. "I think your plans are good. If you want the best for the kids, it'll be good to build an aquarium here." "I knew it. Let's build an aquarium here. I'm sure the ki

Renee started hitting Stefan before he could respond. She turned all of her accumulated dissatisfaction lately into fists and punched Stefan's shoulders, chest, and back."After all, you're annoying. We'll become enemies one day. I might as well beat you up now!"While punching him, Renee kept talking and rebuking him like a child. Stefan was just a normal human being. Besides, Renee was an expert in martial arts. After suffering a few blows, Stefan felt quite hurt. But he would never be her enemy, like he said. Naturally, he did not fight back and merely let Renee beat him up."It's fine. Just hit me. I don't mind being your human sandbag as long as you feel better after beating me up."Stefan stood tall and motionless. He calmly let her vent her anger. He knew that she had suffered lately. To be more specific, she had always suffered the moment she met him. Hence, he would not refuse even if she beat him up and got him killed. He felt that he deserved it."Do you think I'll

Stefan paused and spread his hands helplessly. "What else can I do? I can only surrender unconditionally!"Renee's gaze wavered, and she probably did not expect such an answer from him. She had thought that he would fight him instead."You must be joking…" Renee smoothed her hair and sounded uneasy."No, I'm not. I'll never see you as my enemy, regardless of whether it's your brother or the Baldwin family. As long as you take their sides, I'll admit to my defeat," Stefan said seriously. He knew that Renee would suffer the deepest harm if he chose to fight Quinton or the Baldwin family and if Renee was stuck between them. He did not want to see that and would rather give up."Stop pretending to make selfless sacrifices. I don't need that…" Renee did not feel better because of his answer. Instead, she felt more stressed. "I'd rather we fight fair and square instead of winning through unfair means. What does it mean? Is it some kind of charity?"If Quinton or the Baldwin family

Lately, Renee investigated the past between the Hunt and Everheart families from various aspects but found nothing fishy. When the Everheart family faced their most difficult times, the Hunt family secretly invested in them through a third party. Hence, the Hunt family did not harm the Everheart family. Instead, they had helped the latter. It was also why Renee still spent time with them, even though she had fallen out with Stefan many times. She still wanted to get along with them."So, there's been a rift between us for a long time." Stefan did not blame Renee after her honest reply. He merely felt sad. They were once a close couple with many deep memories. But in the end, they drifted apart and doubted each other like enemies. However, Stefan could understand why. It was all because of his actions."I'm sorry," Renee sincerely apologized to Stefan. "We were in a relationship for many years. I shouldn't have doubted you or your family. It was your family who had helped me when
