Chapter 1

“Let’s get a divorce, Renee.”

The man’s cold voice sounded from behind while Renee Everheart was in the middle of searing steaks. After hearing those words, she became seemingly numb to the hot oil splattering on her cheeks from the lightly sizzling pan.

“We’re only husband and wife on paper. Now that four years have passed, it’s time to end this,” Stefan Hunt said with a cold, distant tone.

Renee bit her lip anxiously.

‘Looks like this day was inevitable after all…’

Her family was declared bankrupt four years ago. Her parents, unable to endure the stress of financial hardship, took their lives together, leaving young Renee to handle the mess alone.

In the past, Renee’s grandfather fought alongside Stefan’s grandfather on the battlefield, and he even saved the latter’s life once. In his dying moments, he voiced out to his old pal his concern for his granddaughter and left Renee under his care.

And so, a marriage of convenience was arranged between Stefan and Renee to put the old man’s concerns to rest.

As time passed, Renee found herself falling in love with the man she married. She thought that as long as she played the role of a good wife, he would reciprocate her feelings one day.

However, what transpired was the complete opposite of what she had hoped for.

“I’ll give you 40 million dollars and a penthouse at Long Beach. Here are the divorce papers. Sign them if you have no objections.”

Stefan then pushed a document towards Renee. His stern expression indicated that this was no more than another business transaction to him.

Renee skimmed through the string of numbers.

‘40 million dollars for four years, huh? The Hunts are still as wealthy as ever,’ she thought to herself.

“Do we have to?” She put down the document and stared at her husband.

The man she had loved for four years was drop-dead gorgeous, yet his beautiful face was always stern and distant.

“Yes,” Stefan replied without a hint of hesitation.

Renee’s heart stung, but she was not one to drag things out. As her objections had fallen on deaf ears, she knew it was time for her to go.

‘Whatever, I got 40 million for the years I’ve spent being his wife. This is more than worth it!’

“Alright.” She picked up a pen and scribbled her signature on the papers decisively.

Stefan was taken aback by her resoluteness. The Renee he knew was fragile and indecisive, and he had never seen this side of her.

For some reason, this left a sour taste in his mouth.

“I’ll let you know once this is processed. If it’s possible, I’d like you to move out by tonight.” The man said, brushing off the unpleasant feeling in his chest before leaving.

It was painfully obvious that he didn’t intend on discussing the matter over.

On the very same night, the housekeeper immediately threw Renee’s belongings out of the villa after receiving news of the divorce. It wasn’t like she respected Renee back then, but now that they were officially separating, she became openly hostile.

“Serves you right, you gold-digging leech! It’s about time they decided to kick you out!”

Renee had no choice but to crouch down and pick her scattered clothing up. The cold night breeze only served to rub salt in her wound.

Just then, she heard the sound of a car rolling to a stop behind her. A tall slender woman emerged from the vehicle.

“Ms. Desrosiers, you’re here! Welcome, welcome!” The housekeeper, who was just yelling profanities at Renee, immediately jumped to the guest’s assistance.

However, Briar Desrosiers didn’t even bother to spare the housekeeper a glance. “Be careful with my belongings. If you break even a single thing, you wouldn’t be able to pay it back within a lifetime.”

Renee’s entire body stiffened up. In mere seconds, the pieces fell into place in her mind.

After reaching a consensus, Renee and Margaret walked toward the hill behind the yard happily. They wanted to go up the hill. The hill wasn't very tall and was full of plants. Since it was a hot summer, it would be refreshing to go up the hill. The air was fresh, too."Come, Margaret. Let me support you. We'll go up the hill together!"Renee kept close watch of Margaret. She felt that Margaret had aged a lot, so she always supported Margaret carefully. "I'm old, but I'm still full of energy. This hill is a piece of cake!" Margaret wanted to prove that she was healthy, so she withdrew her hand and walked ahead of Renee quickly."Okay!" Renee, helpless, agreed to it. It was the first time Renee was seeing Margaret act like a child, even though she was old. Things were different from the past, when Margaret always put them first. Now, she was wilful and headstrong. This change filled Renee with happiness. In the past, Margaret took care of Renee and Renee's children. Now, sh

Margaret looked into Renee's eyes. For a moment, she wanted to tell Renee everything, but she could not bring herself to do so."No, I'm fine, Ms. Ren. I'm tired and want to rest. I didn't sleep well lately, so I asked Caia to give me some needle jabs." Margaret patted Renee's shoulders, not wanting Renee to worry too much."Is that so?" Renee was still worried. She held Margaret's hand. "No, you have to go to the hospital with me! Let me take you there for a body check-up." "No, that's unnecessary!" Margaret reacted aggressively. She swung off Renee's hand and said solemnly, "I'm old and can't work much. Plus, I'm a doctor. I know about my physical condition well.""Oh, okay. I'll listen to you." Renee became scared all of a sudden because she had never seen Margaret that solemn toward her. She was afraid that she might be forcing Margaret. Margaret probably had some secrets that she didn't want Renee to know. If Renee kept nagging, Margaret might not be able to take it. Ma

Caia was worried about leaving Margaret home alone. Hence, she said to Renee, who was about to set off with her, "Why don't you stay here with my aunt? She misses you lately. I'll go with this guy.""Sure."Similarly, Renee was worried about Margaret. Besides, she felt that it was enough for Stefan and Caia to go to the hospital. Hence, she agreed readily. "Is that okay with you?" Stefan frowned, worried. But he had no idea why he was worried."What are you talking about? My aunt was Ms. Everheart's nanny. She helped raise Ms. Everheart. Even her children are raised by my aunt. Will my aunt ever harm Ms. Everheart?" Caia grumpily criticized Stefan. Margaret was always very worried about that family and had exhausted herself. But Stefan was on guard against her. It filled Caia with displeasure. If Margaret had not insisted, Caia would never have helped Stefan. "I didn't mean that." Stefan always respected Margaret, so he explained calmly, "I'm just worried about them. I don'

"Margaret!" Renee's eyes brightened when she saw Margaret come out of the room. She acted like a helpless child who had finally found her mother, who would unconditionally protect her.She let go of Stefan's hand and rushed toward Margaret, her eyes red. She hugged Margaret's arm tightly. "It's been a few days. Are you okay? I miss you so much! I'm not used to the days without you by my side.""I'm sorry, Ms. Ren. I've been slacking off these days. I'm sure you're very busy. I'll go home after a few days' rest." Margaret gently patted Renee's back as if she were putting the latter to bed when the latter was young. She was tender and patient. "No, that's not it!" Renee hurriedly shook her head and explained, "I'm not used to the days not having your company. I can still handle other things. I'm not tired, either. Just rest well. You can come home whenever you want."Renee's attachment toward Margaret was in her emotions rather than daily life. She would panic, though she was tou

"Did I give you up?" Renee sneered at Stefan's question and retorted, "Who gave the other up first? You or me?""It's not the time for that. Don't you find this so-called physician weird? We hold her no grudge. Why does she want to sew discord between us?" Stefan purposely avoided Renee's interrogation and looked at Caia vigilantly. He felt that Caia was a bad person, or at least someone difficult to tackle."What's our relationship like? We don't need her to sew discord, either."Renee sneered again and found Stefan's worry unnecessary. Their relationship was already ruined. They didn't need Caia to sew discord between them either. "Initially, you wanted me to disappear from your world. I'm just granting your wish, and I can ask Caia to cure your aunt at the same time. Isn't it a win-win situation? Why are you wasting time?"Renee thought that Stefan was just dawdling. It was not a big deal. He did not have to hold conflicted feelings like that. Speechless, Stefan's face wen

Stefan couldn't bear to see Renee try to please another person for his sake. Hence, he said coldly, "There are a lot of exceptional physicians in the world. She's not the only one. Let's go!""No way! There are a lot of exceptional physicians in the world, true, but meeting them isn't easy. We finally met one today. Of course, we can't miss this chance! Plus, your aunt can't afford to wait."Renee turned around and whispered to Stefan solemnly, "I know you've always been proud and never bowed down to anyone. And I didn't ask you to bow down. I'm doing that instead. Just leave it to me. As long as your aunt is cured, it's fine." "The truly good doctors instinctively cure people. No one is as superior and arrogant as her. I guess you're fooled by her tricks."Initially, Stefan had high hopes for Caia. After all, he felt much better and energetic after drinking that herbal soup.It proved that Caia was excellent. She was the only heiress of the Albus Order, so her medical skills w
