Chapter 1

“Let’s get a divorce, Renee.”

The man’s cold voice sounded from behind while Renee Everheart was in the middle of searing steaks. After hearing those words, she became seemingly numb to the hot oil splattering on her cheeks from the lightly sizzling pan.

“We’re only husband and wife on paper. Now that four years have passed, it’s time to end this,” Stefan Hunt said with a cold, distant tone.

Renee bit her lip anxiously.

‘Looks like this day was inevitable after all…’

Her family was declared bankrupt four years ago. Her parents, unable to endure the stress of financial hardship, took their lives together, leaving young Renee to handle the mess alone.

In the past, Renee’s grandfather fought alongside Stefan’s grandfather on the battlefield, and he even saved the latter’s life once. In his dying moments, he voiced out to his old pal his concern for his granddaughter and left Renee under his care.

And so, a marriage of convenience was arranged between Stefan and Renee to put the old man’s concerns to rest.

As time passed, Renee found herself falling in love with the man she married. She thought that as long as she played the role of a good wife, he would reciprocate her feelings one day.

However, what transpired was the complete opposite of what she had hoped for.

“I’ll give you 40 million dollars and a penthouse at Long Beach. Here are the divorce papers. Sign them if you have no objections.”

Stefan then pushed a document towards Renee. His stern expression indicated that this was no more than another business transaction to him.

Renee skimmed through the string of numbers.

‘40 million dollars for four years, huh? The Hunts are still as wealthy as ever,’ she thought to herself.

“Do we have to?” She put down the document and stared at her husband.

The man she had loved for four years was drop-dead gorgeous, yet his beautiful face was always stern and distant.

“Yes,” Stefan replied without a hint of hesitation.

Renee’s heart stung, but she was not one to drag things out. As her objections had fallen on deaf ears, she knew it was time for her to go.

‘Whatever, I got 40 million for the years I’ve spent being his wife. This is more than worth it!’

“Alright.” She picked up a pen and scribbled her signature on the papers decisively.

Stefan was taken aback by her resoluteness. The Renee he knew was fragile and indecisive, and he had never seen this side of her.

For some reason, this left a sour taste in his mouth.

“I’ll let you know once this is processed. If it’s possible, I’d like you to move out by tonight.” The man said, brushing off the unpleasant feeling in his chest before leaving.

It was painfully obvious that he didn’t intend on discussing the matter over.

On the very same night, the housekeeper immediately threw Renee’s belongings out of the villa after receiving news of the divorce. It wasn’t like she respected Renee back then, but now that they were officially separating, she became openly hostile.

“Serves you right, you gold-digging leech! It’s about time they decided to kick you out!”

Renee had no choice but to crouch down and pick her scattered clothing up. The cold night breeze only served to rub salt in her wound.

Just then, she heard the sound of a car rolling to a stop behind her. A tall slender woman emerged from the vehicle.

“Ms. Desrosiers, you’re here! Welcome, welcome!” The housekeeper, who was just yelling profanities at Renee, immediately jumped to the guest’s assistance.

However, Briar Desrosiers didn’t even bother to spare the housekeeper a glance. “Be careful with my belongings. If you break even a single thing, you wouldn’t be able to pay it back within a lifetime.”

Renee’s entire body stiffened up. In mere seconds, the pieces fell into place in her mind.

Renee did not linger there. She quickly went home. Jovan was right. Stefan was waiting for a long time in the living room, as if he knew what she had gone through the night before."What…are you doing here alone in my house?"Renee looked at Stefan. For an unknown reason, she was guilty, as if she were caught doing something bad.Since it was a weekday, the two children had gone to school. Quinton was busy with his shop while Joanne was preparing the documents for college admission. Thus, Renee was left in the large house with Stefan.Renee could not figure out why Stefan would be there at that time. Presumably, he knew something and had purposely come to find fault with her."I was waiting for you!"Stefan was straightforward and did not regard himself as an outsider. He was even holding Renee's coffee cup and drinking Renee's ground coffee. "This is my house. Who let you in?" Renee grew furious at him for acting like he owned the house. She walked over and snatched her cup.

Complicated feelings gripped Renee. She quietly put on her clothes because she wanted to leave quickly. It was stressful and silent in the room, as if a thunderstorm was coming. It seemed like the world would lose control at some point."Bye. Let's forget about what happened last night." Renee took a deep breath and tilted her head to say to Jovan. However, no one could erase the past. She could never pretend that it had never happened, though she wanted to. She was just deceiving herself. Jovan finally failed to suppress his laughter while watching Renee's back."Hahaha! You amuse me!"Renee frowned and turned to size Jovan up. "Why are you laughing?" "You're naive and easy to fool!" Jovan held his belly and laughed briefly. He tried his best to control his emotions. "I'm just joking with you. Why did you believe me that easily? Be frank with me. Did you want something to happen to us, too?" "Was it a joke?"Renee heaved a sigh of relief before anger gripped her. She rushe

It was already the next day when Renee woke up. The sunlight was warm with a breeze.Renee opened her eyes and looked at the bamboo forest outside. She felt like she was in a dream. "You're awake?" When Renee scanned the room, she failed to notice that Jovan was in a small living room outside the room for a long time."What are you doing here?" Renee was shocked to see Jovan there. After all, she found it inappropriate for a man to be alone with a woman in a room, though they were quite far apart.Jovan pocketed his hands and walked toward her. He smiled and teased her. "Calm down. It's not the first day we've lived together." "Shut up!" Renee frowned and stopped him from saying inappropriate things. She rubbed her hair and pushed the blanket aside to get off the bed. Then, she realized that all of her clothes had been changed, including her underwear.Instantly, she felt quite sober and cold, as if someone had poured cold water on her."What did you do to me last night?" Renee avoided Jovan's scrutinizing gaze and pursed her lips. "There's no reason why. I just don't want to do it."She was not lying. She just did not know why she chose not to seize such a big advantage. She wondered if she didn't want to be Stefan's enemy. That might be the reason. However, Azure Group and Hunt Enterprise were long competitors and enemies based on the current development. Renee never went easy on Hunt Enterprise when they were fighting for shares in the market. She wasn't scared to be their enemies. After some contemplation, she felt that she might be reluctant to do so. She couldn't bear to see everyone attacking Hunt Enterprise. In short, Jovan was right. Renee still held some special feelings for Stefan. They fell silent while they were eating and munching. After a long while, Jovan finally lowered his head. "Fine. If you think this cooperation will make you unhappy and cause trouble, I'll stop.""Mm?" Renee raised her head and looked at Jovan with surpr

Renee was stunned briefly. After a short hesitation, she laughed heartily. "Of course. If you don't cause trouble, I think we could be friends.""I promise I won't cause trouble again." Jovan did not even hesitate. He gave her a promise sincerely and eagerly, like a loyal dog."That's great. I'm not a stubborn person who refuses to let go either." Renee smiled with ease.Although Jovan had done a lot of extreme or crazy things, he did once use his life to grant her wish. His craziness was because of his obsessive love for her. If he could move on and befriend her, she could do the same, too. The people who could not move on could never be friends. They could only become enemies. Jovan was not that important to Renee that she had to hate him."Well…" Jovan paused and gave Renee a profound look. "What do you think are the categories of causing trouble?"While eating, Renee frowned. "What do you mean?""Simply put, is it considered causing trouble if I want to work with you t

"If I had never met you, or you had grown annoying, I would've long moved on. I wouldn't be in this pathetic mess like I am now!"Jovan kept his head low and looked melancholic. His shoulders were moving slightly as if he were trying his best to hold his tears back.Seeing that, Renee could not bear to hurt him, even though she was cruel. After all, she did not hate him, after excluding all the other reasons. On the contrary, she admired him."Don't cry. I… I don't mean that." Renee contemplated for a while and said carefully, "You're not that bad. We just can't be friends because of my different position."Jovan kept his head low. It was unknown if he was crying or not, but he exuded a melancholic and weak aura. It was like a drop of ink in a pool of water. It was already spread limitlessly. Consequently, Renee got affected and grew sad, too. "Okay, stop crying. I won't leave. I'll chat with you for a bit." Finally, Renee yielded.Instead of leaving cruelly, she chose to
