We're out at the poolside, the party is dying down, and Chase is nowhere to be seen. I need to retrieve my bracelet from Chase before Anna notices that it was gone.
Managing to slip out of Anna’s sight, I wade through the entrance hall into the grand atrium. The palace is large enough for one to get lost without guidance, but I’ve had the privilege to tour every nook and cranny. I can go just about anywhere with my eyes closed. The map is stuck in my brain like a gum.Chase’s bedchamber is on the south wing of the building. I’ve been in there once playing hide and seek with Anna when I was seven.
As I arrive outside the door, there are no guards to escort me inside. One of the double doors hangs ajar. This is weird in every sense. At least two guards are positioned on every doors of the palace at all times. This is too easy.
