William held Rosaline tighter as he asked.
“Lexi?”
“um”
“Can I ask you for a favor?”
“What is it?”
“If you ever suspect I might break your heart, don’t leave me. Just talk to me. If you get confused or insecure or think I’m not trustworthy, just ask me.”
“What are you talking about?” Rosaline thought something was wrong with him and tried to move to see his face.
But he hugged her tighter instead.
“Just promise me.”
“What’s wrong?”
“It suddenly dawned on me that you meant what you said in the restaurant that day. And I had this epiphany that you hugged me and left without saying anything.”
“I’m sorry.” Rosaline could feel his panic.
She felt horrible that she made him uncomfortable when all he had ever done was made her feel good and happy.
