A GROWING HEART
The stranger draws closer and closer while I willed my beating heart to quite down. A friend calls to him in some strange language, and he gestures for them to join him, both now on my tail. I blink rapidly, a headache pounding in my ears, my breaths sharp. When both walk pass me seraching for something else, I can't stop the sweat from running down my forehead. The heat is driving me crazy from where I stand and I fear that it will reach the house soon. There's frustration building in my heart thinking of all the work we've done and in vain too.
I had forgotten about raids, thinking back of our neighbors and now seeing why they acting so vulgar by attacking us first. They were weary. It didn't matter that maybe we were asking for help, they've probably been exploited and plundered time and time again. But if they were searching for others who were vulnerable, the woman with the small shack was more than fair game.
