My eyes fluttered open just as a policeman stepped into the cell.
“Mr. Whitmore, there’s someone here to see you,” he said, motioning for me to follow as he unlocked the door.
I stood, stiff from hours on the cold bench, and stepped out silently.
Donovan and I had been separated the moment the judgment was passed.
Since then, I hadn’t seen him, didn’t know where he was, or what he was plotting—if anything.
