When we returned from the paternity test, I found my grandparents ready to head back to Brazil. According to Leonel, Anton, and Aaron needed his firm hand more than I did at the moment.
At least, that’s what he said, or strongly implied.
With his departure, the atmosphere in the mansion seemed to shift. It felt lighter, quieter. As if everyone, including me, could finally breathe again. Leonel had that effect: a magnetic, admirable presence, but always demanding. He made you toe the line even without saying a word. And in Kimberly’s case, it seemed he had driven her straight into her room and behind a locked door.
She hadn’t left her room since we got back from the clinic the previous afternoon.
