Laurel took a deep breath, brushing invisible dust from her jeans and glancing around again. The fair was loud and colorful, but she couldn’t enjoy it.
The bright colors didn’t comfort her; they just gave her more things to keep track of. More shadows. More places for someone to hide.
She checked her watch. Twenty minutes late.
Her lips pressed into a thin line. She wasn’t surprised. Delays were part of this game, always had been. But lately, her patience was thinner than ever. Seven years was a long time to stay one step ahead of death. She was exhausted.
The promotion had seemed like a dream. When the company made her regional manager, she’d thought she’d finally made it, more money, a better apartment, security for Kael.
But that was before she learned what was hidden behind the polished glass windows and confidential briefings. Before she’d seen things that couldn’t be unseen.
