Just as I was working up the nerve to mentally draft my life, I heard a knock on my door. Not the usual rapid-fire knock from Dad.
I dragged myself up, yawning as I pulled the door open, only to nearly choke on my breath and fall to my knees.
Mike was standing right there, beside my dad.
I just knew I wouldn't be able to escape him forever. The universe had a sick sense of humor that way. Just when you think you've bought yourself enough time to figure things out, reality comes knocking.
It had been days since I last spoke with Mike. Not because I was avoiding him, but because I couldn't reach him. Not after Dave shattered my phone like it was some kind of disposable piece of plastic.
