DAVE
I can’t say I was surprised when Mom yelled because it was obvious Evie didn't want to come with us.
“Evie, we are running late! Come outside!” The strain in her voice was obvious like she was trying to call someone who had long mastered the art of ignoring the world. But Evelyn wasn’t just a member, she was in a league of her own when it came to selective hearing.
Mom called again. No response. Not even the sound of movement from inside the house. At this point, it wasn’t just about being late. It was as if she just wanted us to leave her behind.
Mom turned to me, irritated. “Dave, please go and check on her and hasten her up.”
I would have sighed dramatically if I wasn’t too busy trying to hide the way my heart picked up at the request. Because this right here was my answered prayer. An opportunity I had been looking for a reason to go to her room without making it obvious. Now, I had one, handed to me like a goodbye gift wrapped in Mom’s irritation.
I didn’t waste a second.
