EVELYN
I walked in, dragging my feet like each step owed me something. My bag hung from my shoulder but my barely empty body scraped along the floor, making that soft shuffling sound that only added insult to injury. He made sure I took it. Go with your property, like it meant something. But that bag, there was nothing of value in it anymore.
I kicked the door shut behind me harder than I should've and the sound echoed louder than I expected, like the room was mocking me for thinking I had any control left.
I dropped the bag right there, right by the door, as though even carrying it one more step was beneath me.
I sank to the floor without ceremony with my knees bending until I was crumpled beside the edge of the bed, back pressed to the cold frame. My eyes dulled and my hands trembled from pain. My cheek brushed against the material of the comforter but I didn't care.
I pulled my knees into my chest and hugged them like they were the only things left that hadn't walked away from me.
