It was a quiet Wednesday morning. The kind of morning that lulled into thinking the day might actually go smoothly. I should’ve known better.
Helen, my closest friend, had offered to take Ruby and Rhett to school today. “You’ve been looking exhausted, Rubes,” she had said when she showed up at the door with her usual warm smile. “Why don’t you take a little time for yourself this morning?”
I agreed, grateful for the help. Maybe a few hours alone would give me the chance to clear my head.
